    Uh... ya.

It could've been done better, but the other two were impossible without it.

There have actually been a few really good alternative treatments of Episodes I and II here on the boards. Of course, there have been some crap treatments, too.

Well, Episode I kinda had to happen...or else we'd be watching Ep.III and couldn't figure out who Padme or anyone else was.

Plus, it takes out Qui-Gon and Darth Maul from the whole picture of SW, which kinda sucks.

It's not like Maul had much of a future outside of TPM. Can you see him running the CIS?

Personally, I think that the events of TPM are a bit superflous to the overall saga. Yes, Anakin is found and starts getting trained and all, yes, we meet Obi-Wan and the Sith, yes, we first encounter the Trade Federation and what not, but the Star Wars Saga never really begins for me until about 1/3 of the way into AotC. Personally, I would advocate radical change to EpI; I?d make Anakin older and move it forward a good 8 years, and deal with prior events in a prologue or flashbacks or some such thing. IOW, make it matter.

I am happy the story of Episode I became the first episode of the SW Saga.

But what would've pleased me equally so, I suppose, is for Episode II to have been Episode I, and the Episode being the Clone Wars and RotS being the third. That would've been just as good.

Personally, I find the Prequels to be arbitrary and unnecessary. The Classic Trilogy went on for at least twenty years as the story of Luke Skywalker, with all the information needed about the Jedi and Vader given in expository dialogue. As it is, in my opinion, the Prequels are simply supplemental add-ons to an already completed story. The Original Trilogy didn't need the Prequels, but the Prequels NEED the Original in every aspect.
