I want to use it for DVDs as well. I know the XBox is more powerful but I have not liked any of the games I played on it so far. Most of the games I played on PS2 have been awesome but maybe I am not getting a good idea from a few games?

What is the DVD player like on each system? I heard that some DVDs won't play on PS2. What about XBox.

Also, can you get a lead that will fit an older tv that doesn't support those AV cables (Melbourne, Australia)?

Anyway, does anyone have a good opinion and review of these machines? Thanks.

X box has the built in hd so you wouldn't need memory cards, We have a digital tv and the PS2 plays dvds fine, but I notice a better picture with our dvd player.

PS games do go down in price depending on stores and length of time they've been out. I haven't seen Xbox games lower than $39.99.

And I believe that you can get an adapter for UHF/VHF tvs.

My Xbox has never had a problem with any of the DVD's I've watched on it and cables are available to attach it through the older tv hook-ups.

The hard drive on the Xbox is great. No memory cards to mess with (unless you want to take you save game over to your buddies) and you can rip music to it to play during some games. Also, you can get updates for games and install it on the hard drive, though this feature is relatively unused at this time, though Xbox Live! is supposed to make it easier.

Xbox has a good selection of games at this point, which is becoming great as the system is out longer. I'm looking forward to Unreal Championship, Jedi Outcast, Knights of the Old Republic, Splinter Cell, and Star Wars Galaxies as future Xbox releases. Oh, and a little game called Halo 2.

If you're interested in playing online, Xbox Live! seems like it will be the far superior service. Since it's not going to be available til November, it's hard to say for sure, though.

    Hope that helps ya out.

Either way you go you'll have a blast. Personally I think it's daft to buy a PS2 at the same price. If it was $100 it'd be more worth it, but when you still have a HD and Ethernet card, plus memory cards it's not all that great of a value, plus the controlers aren't the best for 3d gaming. Plus the PS2 isn't going to have many exclusive titles because they've lacked developer loyalty. Even games thought to be franchise like Metal gear are branching out. It cost them alot of money to get rockstar to keep GTA3/vice city exclusive to the PS2. Whereas Xbox has some great 1st and 2nd party developers.

The only reason I can see to buy a PS2 is Squaresoft (and a very compelling reason it is). Hardware-wise, though, the machine is simply pathetic. It suffers from the worst design I've ever seen and even worse hardware shortcuts (anyone remember the blue disk problem?). Also, if you're going to be using it for DVD playback, the Xbox is far superior as it can use its hard drive to accelerate performance. It also has a much better video chip and DVD decoder chip than the PS2. As for the game issue, give it time. The PS2 has been out a lot longer than the Xbox and has had a lot of time to build up its game libary. If you were going exclusively for gaming though, I wouldn't recommend either one. If that was your only reason I'd go for the Dreamcast. They're only $50 now and have some of the best games ever released (most of which now make up PS2's "exclusive" libary).

If you wanna play online console games, you'd better take into consideration your internet connection.

If you don't have broadband, or if broadband is not available to you, you won't be able to play online X-Box games. Plus, it's gonna cost you more all-around.

However, if you have dialup, you can still play online PS2 games. But the downside to that is that you'll only be able to compete in 2 players on PS2 dial-up.

If you are going to use it for DVD buy the Xbox, because I heard that if you buy the DVD Remote you can send in the receipt and get your money back. So its basically free. Its only good for the month of August. The DVDs look fantastic on regular A/V cables. I have s-video, so the picture looks very crisp. There are some reports that the Ps2 has trouble reading Dual layered DVDs.
Xbox and lack of killer apps, please. Halo, Project Gotham, RalliSport, DoA3, Knights of the Old Republic, Doom 3, Return to Castle Wolfensten(sp), Enclave, World Series Baseball, Gun Metal, Dead to Rights, Morrowind, NFL Fever 2k3, Segas 2k series, and tons more.....
With the Xbox you don't have to worry about upgrading.....Xbox Live is $50 for the first year, and it comes with a headset, a game, and 1 year service.
With the Ps2 you have to buy the Network adapter for $40 and a game. If you want SOCOM that game is broadband only.

I like my PS2 because there are more RPGs for it (Final Fantasy X especially) and I can play my PS1 games on it. RPGs are practically the only console games I play. I don't think I'm buying a new console anytime soon. Got a GameCube as a present from my parents and I'm not that happy with it. No games on the X-Box I really want, so I won't be getting one.

Be it PC or Xbox you've got to play Morrowind and KOTOR. 2 absolute musts for RPG enthusiasts. I like the Final Fantasy's also but Morrowinds killer and KOTOR looks to be one of my top 5.

Hawk, old chum, gotta say the Xbox.

    - Alot of the great games on the PS2 have been or are being ported to the Xbox. In most cases with better graphics and extra content.

    - Built in hard drive means you can store your tunes on the Xbox and then for certain games you can add them to the games soundtrack or completly replace a games soundtrack for your own. :D

    - Xbox online. Best online strategy for the consoles. You get a headset with it for voice communication. 50 bucks for unlimited play for the first year, that means you can play all games that are online for fifty bucks for an unlimited time within the year. The network is Broad band only meaning the best muliplayer experiance you can get. With the hardrive certain games will allow you to download new content for your games, for example new skins, levels, cars, whatever. With the PS2 in order to get online you have to buy the add on hard drive and modem (56k/BB) which will run you another 150 bucks. Then in order to play games online you have to pony up an additional 9 bucks per game. With the Xbox it's a 50 dollar flat rate for access to all games for the year. :D

    - Because of the Xbox Sony has already beginning work on the PS3 so it's unclear how much life the PS2 has left.

    - Xbox has better graphics and sound capabilities, the built in hard drive and broad band modem. It's got everything but the kitchen sink for the same price as a PS2. Just remember that you will have to dish out 50 bucks for the remote to watch DVD's on the Xbox.

    - But most importantly the games.

The PS2 has RPG's? Thats news to me... Oh you meant Japanese Turn Based Adventure games where they hold your hands and tell you who you are, what you have to do and where to go. Games where your forced to play someone elses characters and story. The whole point of an RPG is player input. Sorry but the PS2 has absolutly no compelling titles that derserve the label of "RPG". Xbox right now seems to be the console with some real RPGs.

Morrowind A Real RPG On Xbox

Fabel/Project Ego: Xbox Exclusive And One Of the Most Ambitious Console RPG's Being Developed

Star Wars Galaxy, Although It Would Be criminal Not To Play It On A PC

Bioware + Star Wars + Xbox = Knights Of The Old Republic, RPG bliss :D

I know this against popular opinion (sorry RBE) but I went with Playstation 2. Why?

I don't doubt the power and potential for the XBox but there have been so many systems before it that promised a lot but failed IMHO. i.e. Atari Jaguar, Dreamcast, N64 and, for history buffs, Beta Video Recorders. Here we have superior products that are simply overpowered by numbers and lots of software. Buying an XBox, when I don't like any of the games our right now, is a small gamble. It could get a huge library full of games in a year but, right now, I am guranteed a great machine and great games. "Gurantee" is the word. I used to have faith in the Nintendo to deliver so I never had to test my faith but after the crap they brought out for N64, and lack of games, I will not go down that path again.

N64 is a great system STILL. If there were more games like Goldeneye and Mario 64 out there, I would own them but where were the games? I feel this way with XBox. It reminds me too much of the Atari Jaguar which boasted a huge control and massive power. Then it vanished.

I think XBox is already getting a big following but it is yet to completely prove that it will stick it out against Sony. Sony have already taken over the market for consoles and they are someone I feel secure with.

Worst case scenario now? I am stuck with a great system with great aray of games while the Xbox begins to dominate. If, in a year, the XBox kills the comp, I'll wait and either get an XBox or a PS3. Right now I feel I haven't taken a gamble. I've walked away from the Casino with some winnings that will make me happy. Maybe I could have won another thousand bucks but maybe I would lose it all.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully, both systems will be around for a while! :)

How many of Ps2 games are considered "buyable" out of 150+ odd games, I see 12 or so that are worth the disc their on.
I hope you bought Gran Turismo 3 and MGS 2 those games rock.
    The Rev

PS I hope you don't plan on going online with your Ps2 cause you won't enjoy the lag.

Somehow i doubt that the Xbox is going anywhere with microsft backing it up. The advertising budget alone is somewhere around 2 billion dollars...Most countries don't even have that much money.

Nearly everyone that's was a sold PS2 fan that bought an Xbox that I've met has shed their PS2 for the box. Most keep the PS2 for GTA3 but that's about it. One of my friends traded in all of his favorite games and bought the Xbox versions because he wanted faster load times and better graphics. While I wouldn't have done that I can't blame him if he's got the cash. It's just so funny because they were happy in their ignorant bliss thinking one multinational company wasn't as evil as another; that is till they hear the monks chanting.........

Yeah, I'm in that boat, especially since GTA: Vice City isn't coming out for the XBox. Oh well, I'll still probably get one after my roommate buys my Cube (which I never use except for the occasional Rogue Leader DS Trench Run :D ) for 100 bones.

Hawk - the one game you NEED to buy for the PS2 is GTA3. Quite possibly one of the best console games ever. :)
