By the time of Episode 7, I think it would make sense for R2D2 to have an upgrade that would allow him to speak English. Battle droids spoke English, so we know it's possibe for robots to do it.
Imagine how cool it would be if the first time we hear R2 in Episode 7, it's like this:

Luke: "Artoo! Power up the ship! We have to get out of here!"
    (audience expects familiar beeps)

    Artoo: "Roger roger!"
(audience's jaws all drop and everyone high-fives each other!)

Does anyone else like this idea, or does everyone think Artoo should continue to just boop and beep?

Luke: "Artoo! Power up the ship! We have to get out of here!"

    R2D2: What's my name?

    Luke: I... Artoo... wha-?

R2D2: What's my goddamn name?! Twenty ****ing years and you'd think you'd start using the name my programmer gave instead of this cutesy nickname ****!

Luke: Ar- I don'- We have too-

R2D2: What if I called you Wormie for the next two goddamn decades? How'd you like that you pajama wearing bowlcut pieca ****!? Un- ****ing -believable.

No, it would ruin him if he spoke. Either his attitude or voice would not fit for the character and it would ruin him for, what i believe would be, a significant percent of the audience.

There is already a thread about what would make you walk out of the theater during Ep VII, right? ;)

I couldn't think of anything worse, the last thing the new Star Wars movies need is R2 speaking english!

    Fixed that for you.

The correct answer is "no". We knew robots could speak back from the very first film... C-3PO was talking up a storm. R2 could've been able to talk back then... it's more fun that he doesn't.

That sound you hear isn't R2, it's the sound of this forum hitting rock bottom.

He should speak English, but with a heavy (but somewhat ambiguous) ethnic accident, so we can all argue over whether or not it's racist.

Dear Disney, please save us from ourselves. We can't go on much longer like this. All we have to talk about is Ewok Sith Lords and whether or not a freakin' droid will speak English for Christ's sake! [face_hypnotized]

    Nice! A bit cyberpunk-y!

As for the OP, no R2 should definitely not speak English.

We need Artoo to speak Klingon just to literally have geek-heads explode en-mase in the first screenings.

So this is what we do to keep ourselves from getting bored waiting on more EpVII announcements. Fun times...

Nah, he should speak Mando'a. Or Huttese. Subtitled, naturally. Or have Threepio provide the translation!

What can I say? Poodoo and osik happens.
