Discussion Should the Anthology films have opening crawls?

No, only episodes should have opening crawls.

 

I think the director already mentioned there wont be a opening crawl because then they might have to make a movie about something in that opening crawl and this is just a film about the Rebels in A New Hopes opening crawl.

Like opening a huge can of Exogorths.

My initial reaction is, yes, I love the crawl, but I am looking forward to seeing how they plan to differentiate these films from the episodes.

I'm happy that there isn't an opening crawl - it helps to differentiate these films from he saga films. The crawl also limits the possibilities of what they can do. In RO it sounds like the film will open in the past and there will be a time jump. That would be awkward with a crawl - would it be setting up the flashback, or setting up the rest of the film?

The crawl is great for the saga films. Those need to be consistent. But even there it limits where the plot can go. The crawl for Episode VIII is going to have to be just explaining what the status is of the Resistance, First Order, and Republic after TFA since it will be opening at the same moment TFA ended with Luke and Rey.

I guess we are now at that stage were one has to decide far to go with spoilers. I mean I don't think I want to know EXACTLY how it opens. Maybe it's time for me to leave the Rogue One spoilers allowed threads?

Agree. That's the best way to handle it. These are stories inspired by the franchise. Make the opening crawls special.

 

Serious question. Did Caravan of Courage and the Battle of Endor have opening crawls?

 

Nope. It was one of points people were using early on for why it wouldn't.

 

No crawl is good. TCW didn't have a crawl. That, the WB logo replacing the TCF traditional logo, Newsreel narration, probably had many critics and audience members from the start thinking, "I've got a bad feeling about this!"

 

RO didn't had a crawl. So the next Anthology movies are going to be crawlless.

 

I'm glad there was no crawl. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away is suffice for the anthologies.

 

That title sequence for Rogue One was HORRIBLE. I get not having a crawl, but I think they should have used the traditional STAR WARS logo and then put ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY up in the traditional all cap, yellow font and then have it just disappear rather than having the crawl begin. What they used looked like the worst fan clip art I have ever seen in my entire life.
