Senate Should the first lady be paid seperately?

    Apparently President Obama made a verbal gaffe in implying Michelle Obama didn't work, when he meant she didn't have a paid job at the moment.

    But it does bring up a valid point in that the first lady does a lot of work for the country on no salary. should the first lady be paid? I think maybe the president's salary should be reduced or his post-presidency salary be reduced to give the first lady a salary while in office. What do you think?

    Most Presidents have been independently wealthy, and every one from Eisenhower on has been. The Obamas made a lot of money from book royalties. I think the issue should be revisited the next time the (ex-)President isn't a millionaire (lol).

    Maybe not rich, but he probably made a fair good amount of money on all those real estate/travel deals Congress tried to bust him on.

    A lot of what the First Lady does and can get away with doing is because technically there is no such office or position as First Lady. If she got a salary, it would have to be created and that would create a political storm.

    Alternatively, they could go more fully in the other direction in terms of recognizing marriage. Since they are legally one entity, the wife should have access to all the powers of the Presidency, just like the husband does. Imagine what Michelle Obama could do for the country.

    Since the first lady has evolved into having pretty much official duties, i think first lady/spouse should be an official position. How rich the president is shouldn't have anything to do with getting fairly compensated for the work you do.
