As far as I am concerned getting Mid East oil is better then using our own. We don't need to wean ourselves off of Mid East oil we need to increase it and let our own oil reserves stay high. Let Opec give us all their oil at low prices. That way when its gone they have nothing and we hold our own cards. Getting local oil only further in debts us to them in the future. Let them be stupid and give us everything for cheap. Honestly the price of oil has stayed at the perfect rate which doesn't affect anyone. We need to keep that number the same for as long as possible not to affect the world. Its obvious when it goes too high the economy suffers but when it gets low it looks good but has the means to shake things up.

Now is probably the time where I point out that less than 25% of our oil imports come the Persian Gulf, and only 40% of our oil is imported in the first place. So really, you're talking about what is currently less than 10% of our oil consumption.

Most of our oil comes from Canada as well.

I've been arguing for years that if we're going to invade countries for oil, we should start with Canada, then Venezuela. After that, maybe Mexico. Far more economical ways to steal oil than the Middle East.

For that you'd have to consider mutual defense agreements between countries. Iraq didn't have any with other countries at the time, which made it easy. Doing so in South America would be political suicide and really bring about the end of America's already dwindling appearance to it's citizens and the world.

Not that I support wars of aggression for resources.

Eh, if we don't develop our own oil resources then wouldn't that mean OPEC gets to keep oil prices high and make as much money as possible with the oil they have? Not to mention that if we can use fracking or whatever to find unconventional oil deposits, then sooner or later the OPEC countries will get their hands on that technology and do the same, which means they probably won't run out of oil soon.

In addition to tech innovator and progenitor of space colonies, we now see a spark of economic genius to rival Keynes. Truly, beezel, the galaxy is your oyster.
