No, they can't eliminate the penny, because how else would you be able to buy 2 cent candy at the General Store in Lexington? :)

Our dairies cahnged prices of lollies: so instead of a 1 and 2C lollie you'd geta few for 5c.

Inflation has been such now that those lollies that were 1c are now 5c each anyway.

My bus fare has nearly doubled too, so it was probably time for the 1 and 2 cent to go.

My Terry Pratchett books are also twice the price now.. grumble mumble...

I know the penny costs more to make than it's worth, but there is still a need for it in the U.S:

    - Groups have charity drives where everybody collects pennies which people are happy to donate and have raised millions of dollars for needy causes.

    - Casinos have penny slot machines which are fun to play when you don't want to gamble with a lot of money.

    - Little kids feel rich when you give them a handful of pennies. :p

Ok, ok I now see that these are not reasons enough to keep the penny. They do eat holes in your pockets and are time consuming in giving and getting change.

Pennies serve a valuable service in my life. I save and roll them constantly. There are many jams I've gotten out of because I had a bunch of pennies. Plus, that would take a lot of money out of circulation. The only way they could do it is phase it out of a period of years. It would take a long time to transfer the pennies into other currencies.

I find pennies incredibly annoying. You can't use them for anything anymore including vending machines (some accept pennies, some don't).

I grew up without any pennies in The Netherlands. When I came to the US I thought they were useless and I still do. I would have no problem whatsoever if we got rid of the penny. If that means paying 2 or 3 cents more for some items, so be it. I don't care :p

(Europe does now have 1 cent and 2 cent coins. It utterly annoys my Dutch relatives).
