Should we have the Yahoo groups Files/Photo section open for public viewing?

I've gotten a couple suggestions about opening this to the public, so now I'm asking you guys!

 

I'm all for it. People should be able to view them w/o becoming a member...that way we can show off all our junk to other people.

 

I'm on other Yahoo Groups so I have some thoughts (everyone expresses shock that I would have opinions on this) on open vs. member only etc.

chat-should pretty much be open

files-publicly viewable, only members can add files

photos-same as files

bookmarks-same

database-turned off unless we have an actual use for it, owner writable would work, it sounds like JGOC wants to start a member info db

polls-turned off, duplicates functionality here

calendar-if we use this it should be in place of the one on the website with the site pointing there, one or the other, just not both

messages-usuable only by owner (JGOC) duplicates functionality here, she could still use it if she needs to communicate something specific to us by email

membership-open, I don't know if there's really a reason JGOC should have to take her time to approve members, on other Yahoo Groups i'm on, any one can join and I haven't seen it abused yet, unless the owner was deleting accounts and I just didn't know about it, i'm pretty sure she can give file upload priveleges on a member by member basis.

I agree with you on pretty much all of that... What does everyone else think?

I especially what to know what you guys think we should do about the members... should they wait to be approved in order to join?

well if membership is open to any with no checking but files can only be opened from members whats the point of having files and such locked?

Sure....just verifiy with the photo'd person(s) that it's OK to put them up first.

The uploads will be members only, I think that's what Obi-W & JGoC were talking about.

Yu kno...junior may have a point....maybe we can up the membership by keepin' it locked up tight, and put some inticing notices on the lead-in pages....like maybe one of the flyers.....

 

I just dont want to see people using it for things its not intended to be use for.

Yeah, you definitely have to limit who can add stuff, files and messages, otherwise your space gets filled quickly with warez and used for spam.

You don't have to limit who can read files.

 

uploading should be done by a select few only.

 

Ok, here's what I've done. The groups seems to be leaning toward having the files open for anyone to see. So that has been done. However I'm going to keep the membership restricted. This prevents from just any joeshmoe signing up and abusing the group. Plus it just lets me have that little power trip...

And if for some reason the stress of working on the groups is too much I can always appoint moderators/minions to help with the dirty work.

I've turned off the poll action, just because we can do that here. And the database is open for me only to edit, that way I can make sure that nobody is putting up taboo info or anything like that. And I still want to do that contact list, so please send me your info!

Then if the space for the files and photos run out, I will use my judgement, and remove some of the photos that are no longer needed. Of course I will check with whoever uploaded that file first, before I do anything. And if for some reason that file/photo is no longer being used (maybe it was an icon that is obsolete or somthing like that) and you uploaded it, then please erase it if it's just taking up space.
