I say we send a copy of Independence Day out into the dark voids of space, and see what kind of a response we get.

Maybe some alien hieroglyphics that roughly translate to,"Come at us, bro".

EDIT -- To clarify...if you want throw crap into space under the exceedingly slim chance that someone from Betelgeuse or the Ford Galaxy might find it and decide to make contact and/or invade us....you are wasting time, money, and effort. Space is a big goddamn place, so unless you are sending a robotic probe to an actual discovered planet to survey said planet, you are likely just pissing into the wind.

And honestly, I don't understand why people are so gungho about trying to find alien life, when we have barely scratched the surface of our own cosmic backyard.
BTW....there is a Titan mission currently in the works to bring back samples.

 

Hey, why not, I say. I agree that it's pissing into the wind, but the idea that there is likely other civilizations out there is pretty profound. Staying engaged with the concept of a larger universe, I think that's the benefit.

 

Also, NdGT should DEFINITELY be our emissary. He's for sure in the top five of best living humans.

 

We should METI a YETTI with SETI.

 

I preferred the plan where Will Smith was the emissary.

He already has demonstrated ability as an extraterrestrial greeter.

This is also among the first messages sent.

 

Yeeeeeees! I want a first contact with the interstellar community.

What do we have to loose? The little money and energy this requires don't make any difference. But maybe it'll arrive on a civilised far-developed world or a passing starship will pick up the signal.

I will welcome our new extra-terristrial overlords.
