That's only well put if his intent is to say he actually doesn't care about any movie at all. All films of any worth ask for your emotional involvement. If he can't work that up for any movie anymore, does he go to any movies? And if he does, what movies does he go to see and why?

As far as the story "already being told", who cares? The strength and originality of the film depend more on the way the story is told than on the originality of the basic premise of the plot. Can't two artists approach the same subject? Or must all attempts to render a story be discarded once the first flag has been planted? That's a pretty good recipe for eliminating a solid crop of good movies. Did you know, for instance, that the Maltese Falcon was made three times in ten years? And that the classic, best version starring Bogart was the third attempt?

I agree, completely. Look at Nolan's Batman movies. That's the 3rd reincarnation of the Caped Crusader in the theaters, not counting the 40s serials. First there was the movie version of the 60s series, than the Burton movies... and now Nolan has managed to make Batman interesting again.

No, I don't watch movies often. I don't watch much tv either, and when I do it is very casual. I don't get invested in it.

It's not really about the story already being told, it's that I didn't find it all that interesting the first time around.

If it's a story that I find interesting, I would be more open to seeing it told again.

There's more than one black guy, this can't be a Lucas movie.

From what I understand, this has been something Lucas has wanted to do for quite some time, maybe even preceding the previous film based on the subject matter. That being said, how many times can the story of Wyatt Earp and Tombstone be told in a span of 20-30 years? Or Titanic for that matter, or films on any number of WW2 stories? Just because the film is based on historical events doesn't mean that it can't be told more than one way, or in more than one production.

    That being said:

So my thoughts on the film:

I wanted to like it. I really did. The story was decent enough, the characters were fun (if not a bit stereotypical at times), and it had a good flow.

However, the dialogue was absolutely atrocious. WAY too much of it, way too cheesy, and most of it was just exposition. There was a pointless side-plot romance with one of the characters and an Italian girl that just felt forced. The only good parts of this movie was Cuba Gooding (and that pipe) and Terrence Howard.

In an interview on The Daily Show GL talked about how here was so much information that(in what sounded somewhat like hyperbole) he said it'd be like SW where they have a other information to cover.

Well I think that became a problem here because the non-combat stories were very choppy. Also there are good actors and bad actors and they interract which makes scenes lopsided and clunky. The one romance was almost a throwaway sub-plot. The dialogue was not terrible but it was like they were trying to hard to be cocky fighter pilots.

Despite all that, it is actually entertaining and I don't feel like I wasted my money. I really wish this had been 3D, and I normally always thing that D-Box stuff is a silly gimmick but I may have given that a go too. 3D + D-Box for the air combat scenes would have been incredible.

So, don't expect much from the story and acting though neither is terrible, but the combat scenes are great. Yes, there are a couple of SW lines too.

Want to be a really brave film maker? Make a movie about the other Tuskegee experiment... Showing in graphic detail exactly what was done there.

    A) Just last night someone in our exclusive Facebook group said Lucas officially retired

    B) This thread should be in the "Lucas Stuff Projects that isn't Star Wars" forum that only jp-30 uses

We watched that in History or Film class in college. It wasn't bad, especially if you don't know wt[h] the Tuskanee Experiment was

Oy. I think that might surpass an R-rating.

I saw an interview with Cuba Gooding Jr and some clips from the movie earlier today; I'm interested in seeing it now.

I'm fine with cheesy dialogue; I liked AOTC. :p

This was a fair film, and enjoyable. I think it compares well enough to the other effort at Tuskegee Airmen movie (that one led by Fishburne). The fact that this one had a high-powered production team behind it was evident. I also thought that skipping much of their training was an acceptable way to do the narrative, though it distinguishes the two. I do see what people mean, though, about being a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, but I don't know how many more times I'd see it, and it didn't jump out at me as a "best of the year" in the way some other films I've seen recently have. Still though, I'd recommend it.

If I had to name things that were off, I'd agree that the side plots did seem sort of disconnected from the larger narrative. Also, I thought he was a bit heavy-handed at times. Rather than let the film speak for itself, we got "I hate sand" clunkers of this sort: "Look, those negro pilots are thematically shattering my racist under-estimations of them at the same time as they are literally defeating Nazi pilots." Which was only mildly less subtle than a verbatim quote.

[The scene in the officer's club would have been a lot more effective if the only previous remarks by white bombers had been their initial reaction to having black escorts. The constant cutbacks to their mid-combat reappraisals seemed cheesy to me, and telegraphed other developments too much.

Also, every American bomber crew in this movie are the worst actors ever.

Pretty much just like the white bomber pilots in The Tuskegee Airmen (the one led by Fishburne)

WEll, they were better actors, then.

Fishburne compares favorably to the leads here, and Cuba Gooding Jr holds up good in comparison to. . .himself, earlier. But ye gods, the white bombers.
