again, sorry if this has been done before ....

Something I find really interesting about the new Trilogy is the Darth Sidious / Palpatine thing. No actor was credited as Sidious in AOTC (although it was pretty obviously Ian McDiarmid). In the most recent Australian "Empire" magazine he's interviewed, and he skirts around whether he actually plays the character of Darth Sidious. I haven't actually sat thought the credits for AOTC yet, but I suspect he's not credited as Sideous in this one either.

Although seemingly obvious that Darth Sidious and Palpatine are the same person (and playing on our assumptions) George Lucas is being *extremely* careful to make the connection implied, rather than explicit. I don't think there's a single instance in either film which actually ties the two together, apart from the final pan during Qui-Gon's funeral in TPM. And, of course, we all *know* that Chancellor Palpatine becomes the Emperor, and has dark side powers, from ROTJ.

Also, how come the really powerful Jedi like Yoda and Mace can't sense the dark side in Palpatine. They sit around and chat like buddies. Surely he's not *so* powerful that he can completely hoodwink Yoda, the wisest of the Jedi?

It is my suspicion (backed up by nothing, really) that this will be a major plot twist in Episode III. I think that for Ep III George will try to pull something along the "oh my God!" lines of Darth Vader being Luke's father in ESB. I hope it's not some lame-ass "Palpatine & Sidious are clones" thing. But I'll be very interested to see how this pans out/

Anyone have any thoughts on this, or is my brain just running a little too wild right now?

Jeeze .... I've only been posting a few days and already you can't shut me up.

    Lawrence

This whole "detecting" force users is overrated.

The only time it really happens in the movies is between father & son - Vader & Luke.

Oh, and Vader senses Obi-Wan... but only when he's on the Death Star, not when Vader is near Tatooine.

So don't read too much into this "detection ability" the jedi / sith seem to possess.

From what we see it is only between people who have bonds to start with (father/ son, master/padawan).

this seems like a descent theory, and explains things well.

I think ace is trying to say that jedi can feel the presence of non force users, though this is probably more from the disturbances they cause in the force or perhaps from a heightened sense of perception. perhaps ace is referring to the way obi wan sensed zam wessel sneaking up on him?

    Sure. Close range. Tuned senses.

But it would seem the jedi "sensing ability" isn't all powerful (as some believe), or Anakin & Ben could have tracked Zam at their leisure, rather than risk that crazy pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

But why didn't Vader sense that Leia is his daughter?

Interesting thing in the new "Essential Guide to Characters"--Palpatine and Sidious are listed differently. And it never mentioned they are the same person.

Why should he sense Leia is his daughter? He didn't sense Luke was his son.

Like I originally said, people was overestimate this "Jedi Sensing" ability.

that sounds reasonable. maybe only if they try hard enough they can sense it in other people/beings, Vader never had any reason to suspect leia was his daughter. then when vader was searching lukes feelings, he found out.

I like the theory that the dark side "clouds everything". The Sith are mysterious even to the Jedi, maybe they do have the power to shroud themselves under a veil of secrecy.

as for the Paslpatine/Sidious thing, I reckon Sidious is actually Sio Bibble. I mean , c'mon. you never see them in the same room together, do you?
