Maybe Sifo-Dyas is Ratts Tyerell, who also died 10 years before AOTC.

Seriously, though, Sifo-Dyas wasn't just a member of the Jedi Order, he was a member of the Jedi Council, which put him in a place of prominence. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon undoubtedly knew who he was, which means they'd recognize him if he were Maul.

Also, in addition to the fact that Qui-Gon was never on the Council, Obi-Wan and the Council members recognized Qui-Gon and Sifo-Dyas as two different people.

Sifo-Dyas was never a member of the Jedi Council. At the time of TPM, the members were:

    Plo Koon
    Mace Windu
    Yoda
    Ki-Adi-Mundi
    Saesee Tiin
    Yaddle
    Oppo Rancisis
    Even Piell
    Adi Gallia
    Yarael Poof
    Eeth Koth
    Depa Billaba

Ki-Adi was the most recent addition to the Council, replacing Master Micah Giiett. Everyone else had been there for at least several years.

Count Dooku posed as Sifo-Dyas and had the clones ordered. Count Dooku recruited Jango using the name Tyranus. Count Dooku was a member of Jedi Council but left after what happen to Qui-Gon in the TPM.

Just like what Bib Fortuna, Twi'lek posted :) Listen to him he is the chosen one :p

Don't worry Bib, I understand you. The convo between Jango and Obi pretty much explains it. Some people just want Maul back so bad...

LAMU SU: Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas is still a leading member of the Jedi Council, is he not?

Maul did not pose as Sifo-Dyas. Dooku did. It's that simple.

You sound so sure of things...

LAMU SU: Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas is still a leading member of the Jedi Council, is he not?

Lama Su was mistaken. He didn't know that Sifo-Dyas was no longer among the living, and he certainly didn't know that Sifo-Dyas wasn't a Jedi Council member. He was probably just repeating the story that Dooku told him when ordering the clones under Sifo-Dyas's name.

I think one problem George Lucas is running into in making the PT is that there is probably enough "story" for 4 feature-length films. As a result, some scenes have been deleted (e.g. Anakin meeting Padme's family).

I think if GL was making a prequel tetralogy instead of a trilogy, we might well have seen Sifo-Dyas. Instead, he's just a reference in a few throw-away lines. Fans being fans, we find this unsatisfying and so try to incorporate the character into the somewhat truncated story we've seen on the screen.

In my opinion, Sifo-Dyas was a distict character and is not the alter-ego of anyone in TPM or AOTC.

Oh, well, if Sifo Dyas told Lama Su he was on the council, then it must be true. It's not like he lied to him and had him create millions of clones without permission or anything..

Besides the fact that Jango SAYS who contacted him... As if it wasn't freaking clear enough...

Obi-Wan didn't seem to find it strange that Lama Su said Sifo-Dyas was a member of the Council.

EDIT: The second part of my argument wasn't very good.

    Here's a minor timeframe:

Battle of Naboo--Qui-Gon and Maul are killed
Count Dooku leaves the Jedi Order
    Sifo-Dyas dies
    Sidious recruits Dooku
Dooku recruits Jango Fett on one of Bogden's moons to be the DNA source for the clone army
Dooku contacts the Kaminoans under Sifo-Dyas's name to create a clone army
Dooku gathers some followers and secedes from the Republic

I would assume that all of these events took place within a couple months after the Battle of Naboo.

Obi-Wan didn't seem to find it strange that Lama Su said Sifo-Dyas was a member of the Council.

You can tell by the expression on his face that he senses something is amiss. At that point, Obi-Wan knew that Lama Su was either lying, or that Lama Su believed he was telling the truth, but was repeating lies that someone else had told him.

How do you know Sifo-Dyas died after the Battle of Naboo?

"Master Sifo-Dyas was killed almost 10 years ago."

AOTC takes place a little more than 10 years after TPM (Anakin is 9 in TPM, and he had just turned 20 in AOTC), so Sifo-Dyas must have been killed shortly after TPM.

Correct, Sifo-Dyas was killed before the army was ordered, but he was also killed after TPM, as we can determine by Obi-Wan's response to Lama Su.

The AOTC Visual Dictionary says Anakin was 20 during AOTC.

Well, it wounds my pride to be wrong, but I can't argue with the facts.

At any rate, the fact that Obi-Wan recognizes Qui-Gon, Maul, and Sifo-Dyas as three different people remains.

If you re-arrange the letters in "Sifo-Dyas," you get:

    Yoda is sf.

Do you realize what this means?!?!?

    Not a damn thing.

Bib, You sure about that timeline?

Battle of Naboo--Qui-Gon and Maul are killed
Count Dooku leaves the Jedi Order
    Sifo-Dyas dies
    Sidious recruits Dooku
Dooku recruits Jango Fett on one of Bogden's moons to be the DNA source for the clone army
Dooku contacts the Kaminoans under Sifo-Dyas's name to create a clone army
Dooku gathers some followers and secedes from the Republic

Where are you going to put: "Dooku erases Kamino from the Jedi Archives?" :p

Yoda is sf?!?! OMG! Holy ****!

Seriously, Bib, you're using EU to back up your arguements, and as much as I love the EU, George Lucas doesn't give a damn when he's writing the script. And because you suspect that Dooku is Sifo-Dias doesn't make you any more right than someone who speculates that it could be Maul who is Sifo-Dias. Until we have proof positive either way from an official non-EU source, both opinions are valid, so get off the high horse please.

It could not have been Maul, Obi-Wan said the Yoda that SifoDyas was killed MORE than ten years ago.
