Oh buck up. I could tell you a thing or two about nightmare garage bills. Doubt you drive your cars into the ground quite as well as I do. ;)

Warranties. Next car you get, buy the extended warranty. You don't think you'll need it but you do.

I blew a head gasket on my car last year. The bill would have been $1300 to rebuild the engine if not for that extended warranty I paid $600 for.

That's what has gone on my car...and are you sure about that? This is my fifth car in four years...the first one lasted about a couple months, the second lasted 14 months, the third lasted about three months, the fourth lasted a similar amount of time and this one has been going since January last year. I refuse to let this one be consigned to my wistful approach to car maintenance though...it's too damn good.

I've had a bill for £800+ as well, repairing the engine after one of the pistons did something funny to part of the cylinder. Strangely enough, the car started running incredibly smoothly after being fixed, even better than before the problem started :)

And I only paid £725 cos I used cash ;)

    Ha, here's my advice:

    DONT DRIVE

YES - no garage bills at all!

Or if you do - have a mate that owns a garage!

Wormie - you ever going to take those pics of yourself? ;)

Poodu - get a quote or two first in future and shop around. My sis went to a garage in Manchester and quoted her 1,200 - she brought it to my mate and it turns out only 300 squids worth!
    - Theiving bastich garage folk.

JG, hey, I got green eyes, {well - they kinda change between green, brown and yellow, ! I know ~ tis odd.

    Lurkers ~ HELLO

*since he's half way round, tc decides to finish his lap of honor!*

Minx, you star you - er, yeah - and stuff

OaC - a Dave you are I feel - we shall have to initiate you :D

Nemco -Who are you? What are you doing here? eh? :D

TC, the garage I take it to is the only place I'd trust not to bend me over the desk and pull my pants down. We got friends what works in there and we knows the folks what runs the place. No consolation when they tell you you owe em a grand though

Four cars, Sam? I'd quite buying Yugo's if I were you. ;)

If it's the head gasket, better brace yourself for a lot more than $1300. I screamed and yelled so much they gave me a discount on labor.

No..the head is gonna cost about £650 apparently and the steering rack which also needed doing in its entirety will cost another £150. On top of that is the VAT which adds about another £150 on top of that by my reckoning. I dunno how much discount Mr Moore is gonna give me, but he said he'd give as much as was possible and I trust him...not like I have a choice anyway...

Oh..and the head gasket probably got a bit fubar when I nearly drowned my car last year...certainly didn't help in any way I don't reckon. Also, the head gasket is the kind of thing that goes eventually anyway...just costs the earth when it does. Same with the cambelt...you just accept the inevitability of it all...at least with the cambelt you have a timescale to work with. The trouble with gasket is that it could go again in two weeks and I'll be totally fecked.

cheap aluminum engines. They're not built to withstand higher temperatures as well as the old engines were.

And before you start in on American cars, most of them have Japanese engines. Including BMWs and Mercedes.

It's just the way car engines are being built these days from one side of the globe to the other.

Audi still uses steel for the engine blocks though. If you want to pay the extra $5000 for it.

Oh...and I resent the Yugo comment..that's asking for a dig at American cars! ;)

    Five cars too..not four...five!

Two were nicked and wrapped around lamp posts...so they weren't strictly my fault

When I lived in Salford, I had my car broken into three times - damage accumulated to £900 as the last time they decided since they couldn't find the immobiliser then they'd just smash it up....which was nice. And then when I finally got it returned after the final incident, the house got burgled the same day.

Suffice to say I don't miss Salford. The only result from the whole affair was that just before leaving that house, we caught one of two scally's trying to rob me mate's car; oh how sweet revenge is. Especially when administered through the use of fists. The Old Bill turned up after about half an hour and didn't say a word about the boy's slightly ruffled appearance!

    Mine?

Peugeot 309 GLD - G321 VTT. Red..lovely condition until I overran a roundabout on the A44 and done a bodywork job with the help of a Ford Escort. £1500 down the potty and I still owe the old man for that.

Peugeot 309 GL - C275 CHY. Green. Lovely car, considering it was ratty and tatty. I still loved it. Got rid of it for £320 as it was needing some hefty work on it.

Peugeot 309 GL - E378 ADV. Red. Total crap I bought for £300 to get me by. Engine was shafted and blowing oil all over the place. PXed it for car no. 4

Peugeot 309 GLD - H181 HGL. Blue. Nice looking, inside and out, but wasted diesel like it was a 3 litre petrol. No better than about 20 miles per gallon compared to car 1 which ran at about 45/50 per gallon. Bought for £2000, sold for £1200.

Peugeot 306 XTdt - L736 HGM. Dark Blue. My fave car so far, even better than my green one. Good MPG, good top speed, turbo diesel, great interior and a good engine despite recent troubles. Bought for £3500 - still paying the old man back for it!

One of the little gits who nicked my 205 and wrapped it around the lampost broke both his legs and lost an eye...

    Which amused me to no-end
