I voted for Ackbar just to spite Chissdude.
Cos we KNOW who is going to be on the list, we KNOW who is going to be top of the poll.

Yes I know I'm petty but I like a good fight.

Tactics? Well... Thrawn was more of a strategic master, strictly speaking, but he does have a bit more ingenuity than the other Grand Admirals, so I'd vote him.

Ackbar doesn't stand a change against most of the Grand Admirals, save a few.

General Reikeen (sp?) is always overlooked. He pre-empted the Imperial ground assault at Hoth and got most of the Rebels out with a fighting retreat.....not a bad effort considering he was facing an entire Imperial task force.

This is a dud poll, I think.
My vote goes to Riekeen just to fight the power ;)

Yeesh, it's Emperor Palpatine, surley. As we find out in Dark Empire, he was manipulating Thrawn all the time.

Man, this forum is pretty slow. *shrugs*

Anyway, I voted for Thrawn. But I believe Bel Iblis is a pretty close 2nd, as he was one of the few people who could counter Thrawn's strategies.

I think Grand Admiral Thrawn was more of a strategist than a tactician. So I voted for General Bel Iblis. Grand Moff Tarkin and Adm. Daala would have come in as second.

Sigh. There was another thread flaming Daala and I had to defend her there.

First of all, how many books has she been in? I only know of the JAT and Darksaber, she may have been in the BFC Trilogy but I never read it. Now, the JAT and DS are both written by Kevin J. Anderson, who is universally accepted as a poor writer AND, more importantly, he is very biased towards the NR. Of course that doesn't prove to be a very good argument, but if you look at all of Adm. Daala's battles, only a few were actually due to her own tactical fault.

In my experience, while new S&T (Strategy and Tactics) can always be made up, the vast majority (even that of the great Grand Admiral Thrawn) are new and thickly-concealed versions of the same old thing. Which makes the whole "outdated" argument rather moot.

So by that logic, Ken, if Daala had made up her own strategies on the fly she wouldn't have suffered so many defeats that were seemingly out of her control, right? ?[face_plain]

Perhaps. But some of her defeats were caused by things that were near unavoidable. IE when she was in the Maw and the Sun Crusher rammed one of her Star Destroyers.

Tarkin was hardly a tactician. He wouldn't even abandon the Death Star, even though there was a risk. Hardly a great tactician.

What about Wedge though? He won the New Rebellion battle singlehandedly by deciding to fire on Karrde's ships. He planned several missions in the Rogue Squadron books, including the taking of Coruscant and saw the need for a squad like Wraith Squad in those books. He also saw the need to check out Sernpidal in Ruin and improved on Krefay's plan in Rebirth. Not that Wedge is the best per se, but, like Riekann, he gets overlooked as the brilliant tactician that he is.
