With The (86th) Academy Awards happening tomorrow, I ponder the snubs & upsets that have occurred in the 80+ years of these awards. You're welcome to ponder too.

Recent Oscars dominate the poll because A) there are so many options to choose from over the 85 past Academy Awards and B) those were the ones that jumped out in my mind first. Out of those, I'd say the lack of recognition for Do the Right Thing stands out. It's perhaps Spike Lee's greatest film, a wonderful slice of all the (racial) dynamics of a particular Brooklyn neighborhood on summer's day.

Citizen Kane only winning Best Original Screenplay. So, really, they were ****ing up while they were still in their teens.

Edit: It's particularly egregious as a few of their Best Picture montages have featured scenes from Kane.

    I voted SiL over SPR.

The reason? Dancing With Wolves isn't that shocking over Goodfellas, it just isn't. Sorry! They are both incredible movies, DWW had a far more sweeping scale and involved something voters could feel remorse for over a gangster film.

The Dark Knight snubbing isn't that big a deal. Limit was still five, it wasn't going to win -- and I say that as a Slumdog Millionaire shouldn't have won person -- and the only film it was likely to displace was Benjamin Button (which also wasn't going to win).

And in terms of Spike Lee -- that was bad, but competition was UP that year. I'd easily vote that a #2. But who would film or director replace? I mean, I'd have eliminated Driving Miss Daisy overall but, c'mon... for Picture it'd get rid of Field of Dreams (already strong competition that year) and director you drop Woody Allen for one of his best films (Crimes and Misdemeanors).

Black Swan losing Best Picture and Best Director to The King's Speech.

The lack of nominations for Drive, Melancholia, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Martha Marcy May Marlene

I have yet to see Black Swan (there are mitigating circumstances here) but I have to admit I really, really, really like The King's Speech...

Has anyone ever used the word "snub" or "snubbed" in relation to something other than the Oscars or awards in general?

My answers for wrong calls would be:
How Green Was my Valley beating out The Maltese Falcon
Going My Way beating out both Double Indemnity and Gaslight
The Greatest Show on Earth beating High Noon
A Man for All seasons beating Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf
God of Love beating the other 4 vastly superior short films in 2010
Jennifer Lawrence beating Emmanuelle Riva for Best Actress last year
    Alfred Hitchcock

Really, I'm pretty sure my list of "things I think the Academy got dramatically wrong" is way longer than "list of things I think the Academy got right"
