As we've seen throughout Star Wars history, anytime the Jedi is involved in Republic affairs, it ends badly for them. Whether it's an extermination, scandal, fallen Jedi, etc.

So for what possible reason did they ever involve themselves in the messy political affairs of the Republic? And why do they constantly keep coming back to it no matter how many times they say they're gonna go back to their own business? Why did they not just keep to their own inner-workings like all of those other Light Side of the Force sects?

If their intent was to establish a theocratic political government, they've failed reaaaaaaaaaly badly.

I think because each time the galaxy needed saving and in order to do that they needed to be involved.

Yeah, but still. Why did they feel the need to meddle? It might have been better off if they just kept to themselves, immersing themselves in the Force and whatnot.

I imagine even if the Jedi weren't compelled to save innocent lives and kittens they'd probably still end up serving the role of galactic super trooper. If you belonged to a sect where everyone had mind powers and a standard issue laser sword you'd either end up being forced into exile because everyone's scared of you or guilted into saving everyone's butts or end up ruling the galaxy yourself as some sort of deity/übermensch.

Perhaps they wanted to keep their friends close and their enemies closer? It's pretty obvious the Republic would pose a threat to them if they chose to separate.....

If the Jedi became even more cut off from society at large they'd have a increased desertion rate, the LS isn't only "don't give in to the DS" it's "help your fellow sentient etc etc" you'd get LS deserters leaving the Order to help the man on the street.

It's like asking why do the Sith involve themselves with the republic why not hide out on some planet and study the DS?

Because being a dick has no intrinsic value you have to have other people around to be a dick to.

Maybe you should read The Essential Guide to Warfare...
The book offers some explanation why the Jedi came to serve the Republic, I just do not recall what exactly.
Probably something involving the Tion Hegemony...

Who'd be better off? The citizens of the galaxy that evil forces have tried to dominate over the centuries? Jedi "meddle" to stop the bad guys.
