Because it (a) doesn't support conferences, to my knowledge, and (b) is proprietary and centralized, while IRC is an open standard and decentralized. The only real alternative is Jabber.

 

Jlo have you tried Chatzilla? I like it way better than the AIM chats. Also...we never seen to talk SW in the AIM chat.
