Slate has come out with a very interesting article on how swearing has changed over the centuries. Warning: There is quite a bit of language.
This article has reminded me something I've been meaning to ask: is that word Loki called Black Widow in The Avengers okay to use on this board, or is it against the TOS? Not that I plan on using it, just curious.
Genitalia slang gets into a kind of hazy area where we prohibit some words but not all of them, and the prohibited words are listed explicitly, rather than based on guidelines. As regards "quim" I'd offer my professional assessment at: okay when used in a quote, okay when used to refer to vagina, probably going to prompt a debate in MS when used as an insult*. Other moderators might disagree with that interpretation, and I'd imagine if usage ever became widespread outside of quoting the line from Avengers we'd probably iron out some more solid guidelines. *And as you would be insulting someone I think we're going to be disinclined to rule in your favor, flaming is explicitly prohibited and you're getting cheeky about avoiding a certain other word.
I'm only talking using it in referencing the quote, not any other usage. You know, like would you have to star it out or such. C'mon people, you all know me better than that.
