i just saw an ad for "the descendants" with george clooney. it was the first i had ever heard of this film, but it was one of those annoying previews where the whole thing is just telling you how many awards the movie won or is nominated for or whatever. it got me thinking that i'm really clueless as to which films/actors/etc are likely to be nominated this year. does anyone have any guesses? are they still doing ten films for best picture? were there even ten good films this year?

    i liked super 8 a lot. i hope it gets a nod.

drive might win something, but probably not best picture. potter too. i'm sure tree of life will be one of the best picture noms. rum diary won't do anything. 50/50 maybe. contagion maybe. beginners maybe. margin call no. melancholia most likely.

i think that's all i saw this year. i'm planning to see a dangerous method and maybe tinker tanker solider spanker. those might be contenders.

Planet of the Apes was the only good film I saw this year. That was new, anyway.

Either THE ARTIST or THE DESCENDANTS for Best Picture, but I wouldn't be at all
surprised if perpetual bridesmaid Martin Scorsese was tossed the Best Director nod.

ed/ HUGO might have a shot at Best Picture... [face_thinking]

J Edgar will probably be nominated. And, while not completely 'animated', I think Tin Tin crushed all the animated films this year, technically as well as in scope.

When I consider some of the movies that have been nominated for and won Oscars over the years, I can only shake my head and sigh. The notion that the oscars have any bearing on the merit or quality of any given movie is a joke.
Strictly industry politics, wrapped in flashy paper.
I do my best to ignore them.

I got to see a screening of 65-75% of it when I was at NYCC last month. What I saw was impressive. I'm still disappointed by Professor Calculus' role, but the film is an achievement.

I, also, put no stock in the Academy or its procedures for determining worthiness. Jim Carey's Grinch makeup should not have beaten out Willem Dafoe in Shadow of the Vampire in any reality.

Scorsese hit one out of the park with THE DEPARTED, and deservedly so.
He does, however, have a history of near-misses, starting back with GOODFELLAS
    losing to DANCES WITH WOLVES.

It will be interesting to see if the Academy decides to lionize HUGO as they did THE HURT LOCKER.

That is an excellent example. Conversely, I believe the Academy was right in choosing "The Matrix" over "The Phantom Menace" in terms of visual effects...I mean c'mon..."The Matrix" broke new ground and ILM has had its fair share of accolades. Soon it will bow down to the master that is WETA.

I wouldn't call that a "near-miss" so much as "exemplary of everything wrong with the Academy."

If Billy Crystal doesn't make a joke concerning the Clippers at the Lakers (or Nicholson's........if he shows up, that is) expense, I'll be disappointed.

crap i forgot about "shame". that could end up being a nominee somewhere, but it's hard to say. doesn't the academy tend to shy away from controversial subject matter unless it is in-line with currently acceptable political views/beliefs etc.?
