Many people may get the impression that GL came up with the ideas for "the force" through his knowledge of Eastern philosophy and religion. But I think we don't give Joseph Campbell enough credit. His knowledge of the structure of myth and his own beliefs about religion are clearly similar to "the force". GL states that Campbell was some sort of mentor to him during his time writing SW.

    Any thoughts?

How do you connect being a mentor with coming up with the force? Do you have any proof or evidence to back your theory? If you don't have proof why bother posting a What IF idea.

IF you don't have PROOF to back up your statements then you might as well lock this thread yourself! Give proof this is pure speculation without evidence! This forum is serious, how can we have an in-depth discussion on nothing at all?

Hey, Seldon. Relax. In-depth discussions don't necessarily require proof.

In his early twenties [Lucas] was in a severe road accident and spent many months in the hospital. And when in the hospital he created the concept of the Force.

    "Why bother to even care?"

You mean, like proving a lack of concern by posting in the thread? ?[face_plain]

There is most likely an all powerfull creator in SW who created the force and allows those who can use it it to decide if its for good or evil. I mean there is an afterlife in the saga as weve seen. So if ya go dark ya prolly goto hell and if ya stay good then ya become one with the force and live in some kind of heaven i guess. Whats weird is if your just another creature who has no knowledge of the force does that make ya an athiest? Or maybe ya goto a lesser version of force heaven when ya die. Perhaps we should call jimmy swggart or jim bakker

"The force" was taken directly from a mexican shaman named Don Juan. Author Carlos Castaneda wrote a famous book, in the early 70's i belive, called Tales of Power, which Lucas read and derived the entire concept of the force from. The book describes Castaneda's meeting with the mystical Juan, where he described to Castaneda the nature of the univese--he coined the phrase "lifeforce", saying that there exists an all-encompasing force in the universe, that penetrates and binds the universe together. This force exists within everything that lives and the very act of living generates it--when we die, our life force leaves and joins the collective force of the universe.

Lucas directly used this--the "force" surrounds all living things, intertwining the universe and binding it together, generated by living beings; when someone dies, the become one with the fore.

There is no God in the Star Wars universe, just the Force. This what we call "God".
