We've had the Mos Eisley Cantina, Jabba's Court, the Mos Espa Raceway, the Outlander Club, the Geonosis Arena, the Courscant Opera House and Maz Kanata's Castle.

All places where regular citizens partake in social engagements (except maybe Jabba's court but they still party there)

Now it looks like the newest addition to this list is the Casino on Canto Bight. And according to the photos from the front page:

It looks to be quite the elegant affair. Only in RotS's opera scene did we get a small glimpse at high society life in the Galaxy. Hopefully this is a much more expanded look at the Galaxy's elite.

I would love a Casino Royale vibe where the casino is a place for class and etiquette since we've had our fair share of seedy dive bars and public executions.

I love the style going on here, the elaborate dresses, the alien tuxedos and all the sashes - especially on that dapper equine gentleman. Though I do hope to see at least some familiar alien races in the backgrounds, it's the only thing that perturbed me watching TFA.

What do you think/hope/expect from this scene/setting?

I am looking forward to seeing that tiny little alien (held by the puppeteer?, sitting at the bottom of the top picture). :D I hope he doesn't get the Constable Zuzio treatment. :p

The only thing that disappoints me about these photos, is that Larry wasn't included in them. :( Though I am sure he will rock the dance floor, in the Casino lounge. :p

I like the look, and RJ's description in VF evokes the Beggars at the Feast number from Les Mis...the people who get by and profit without ever taking a side or dealing with the imapct of war and oppression. Rich ******** as RJ said. ;-)

Hmmm....seems as though things are rather black and white in Canto Bight. Hah! Seriously, I mean that literally, visually and metaphorically. I could see Snoke fitting in quite well when we consider his wealth, white garment and fine embroidered accouterments.

Indeed an appropriate place to introduce a physical Snoke.

I wonder if they'd get blatant enough as to have transports full of refugees of the war being repelled from landing on the planet....

    Probably too obvious.

What if Snoke OWNS casinos... and made himself leader of an empire with a large military operation... and makes himself appear larger and more powerful than he is when appearing to the public...

I think that little alien works one of the gambling tables. Looks like he's wearing a work uniform and is holding one of those "canes" they use to corral chips.

Good catch. Although I think he isn't holding the chip cane... I think it's his arm.

If you zoom in, you can see the chip cane's handle, including the top of it which seems to have a metal cap. So I think it's separate from its arm.

That said, the shape of its hands do seem to lend themselves to scooping up chips...

so if snoke is here in the midst of these people how are they avoiding it all? they're aristocrats in their own little world who believe they can exist apart from the galactic conflict, yes?

(not saying snoke and canto bight have no connection, but i'm trying to piece together how they would because even though the cantobightians wouldn't be in danger of war if they welcome snoke with open arms, that means they've picked a side... they aren't so much a world apart then)

and actually if those scenes are inter-cut with luke/rey that would be interesting since he may have decided to check out too.

It's going to go to an indie drama set in a suburban neighborhood. The costumes are going to come from the clothing section at Target, and the Academy members (probably in their gold-embroidered suits with crystal studded monocles idk don't @ me) are going to look at them and say, "My dear sir, how ever did they manage to recreate the gauche raiment of the proletariat with such precision? Why, old bean, I can practically smell their poverty through the screen! Oh ho ho ho ho ho!" *sips champagne made from grapes pressed under the blubber of an endangered whale*

Kaplan will get a nice pat on the head, though. I mean, what he did was cute and all.

    What the hell?

Where did this information and images come from?

Those images aren't at all McQuarrie-esque, the true essence of visual Star Wars. They actually look more Fifth Element than SW.

The information and photos came from this site's homepage.

And I don't believe all of Canto Bight is a casino, maybe it's like the planet's Las Vegas where it's all centralized.

Though I can agree with the 'not McQuarrie-esque' critique. Aside from the big dude with the mane in the back and the chick with the big black eyes and horns - I'm not all that keen on the alien designs. A lot of blobs again and that was a problem in TFA. I don't know what the heck that giant blue blob with a woman's face is in the back of the top image is. And that lady with the conehead better be a Cerean like Ki-Adi Mundi

The costumes designs, with a blend of beautiful forms and the grotesque, look very McQuarrie-esque to me.

McQuarrie means more than "gritty." His work always included elegant shapes with alien accents. That's what I see here, and if I didn't know any better, I would have assumed they came from his concept art.

ETA: McQuarrie's Bespin, for example. Fits right in with the world Canto Bight exists in: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/7a/e9/db/7ae9db391651b5e0da0e7e97103a241e.jpg

^ I disagree on that McQuarrie image. That one has a very minimalistic design, and the characters in it don't look nearly as pretentious. Obviously high end social settings would occur amidst that kind of backdrop, but I wouldn't picture it to be what is shown in the images above.

The images posted above look like some kind of psychedelic sci fi surrealist setting. It has more of a Salvadore Dali look to it than anything. Like I said, when I first saw it my immediate thought was that it looks like something out of The Fifth Element. And it's not that aspects of this kind of style couldn't cross over into SW. Just that on its own I would have never guessed this was a scene in an upcoming SW movie if I was just shown the image without any context.

Well, McQuarrie's Bespin depicts a mining colony and its denizens, not an upper-class casino night. So of course they look less pretentious. My point was that in terms of forms (and McQuarrie's blend of elegance and the grotesque) the Canto Bight crowd strikes me as existing in the same world as McQuarrie's GFFA. It's just that McQuarrie was never asked to draw such people. If he did, I bet they'd look something like that.

Perhaps some species are just better at making credits than others and that's why we haven't seen them in the more slummy environments.

It just plain and simple doesn't look like Star Wars. I'm looking at it over and over and I just can't come up with any association this could possibly have with SW. And honestly, now that I think about it, it has me a bit concerned. There are so many other matters that need to be attended to and fleshed out, that at this point if this Canto Bight nonsense becomes any kind of focus, which it obviously already has, then what the hell are they doing? I'm not saying something like this can't become a part of what we associate with the SW universe at some point. But as far as I'm concerned, we are still in the OT timeline. And introducing something like this that is so far outside of that, I just can't think of any scenario or circumstance where this is necessary. Other than some filmmaker trying to put his own spin on things and show how outside the box he is. Which, again, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just pat him on the head for now and say "great idea, maybe some other time"...no? Because this, right now, come on, search your feelings, this just isn't SW.

I think you are being a tad over dramatic. Apart from all the guests of Canto Bight wearing black and white (and there's probably a good reason for that) I can't see anything so different from the rest of the locations in the GFFA.
