    Actually, I think the weird texturing just means you need to apply some UV maping to the model. That's all.

    I am considering purchasing 3ds Max, but I noticed that version 8 is much more expensive than version 9 (when looking at academic discount for both). Does anyone know the reason for this? Can you do everything with version 9 that you can with version 8?

    I can't even find 3ds Max 8 anymore. It's not worth it though. Get Max 9. Max 8 is really buggy, Plus Max 9 has a 64-Bit version that will soon have compatability with Windows Vista and DirectX 10, and it's got some important updates. You'll never be able to use 3ds Max 8 on Vista.
