Solo Solo Official Photos and Trailers

It's kind of cool to go back through the officially released trailers, photos, and posters for the movies. So I'm bumping this thread and the thread for Rogue One, and I'm also unlocking them so they can have discussion in them (they weren't originally discussion threads).

 

It sucks that the release date and the marketing campaign let this movie down so badly. I think the materials themselves were neat, but a ton of my friends had no clue the movie was even out when it was, expressing confusion that they thought it was going to be released in December "like normal." Because otherwise, the marketing materials sold a fun space western romp, and that's exactly what the movie was.

 

I also think another mistake was not giving this film a much punkier soundtrack, ala The Mandalorian. Instead they went with a classic Hollywood score that made the movie feel stale instead of fresh. Both a funky score and a less blah director then Ron Howard would’ve elevated the material by a lot, even though I like this movie quite a bit.

 

The trailers had heavy, harsh guitar that just did not find their way into the movie at all.

As much as I like the film, and based on talking to people IRL who enjoy it but thought it was nothing special, I may very well be the biggest fan of this movie on the planet (you may all bow or curtsey), but I still would've liked to see what Lord & Miller's version of the film looked like. Maybe it really was a disaster that would have negatively impacted public perception of Star Wars, or maybe it was something unique, distinctive, and fresh that would have confirmed Rogue One's proof that the Anthology films could serve as vessels for inventive explorations of the Star Wars universe. Regardless, I'm still satisfied with the film we got - it's simple, innocent and fun, while still being the most dystopian view of the galaxy far, far away we've gotten on film.

 

Exactly how I feel about it. And I also wished the musical beats we got in the trailers were illustrative of the final film. Han on Corellia with his white denim jacket or whatever gave me strong Joe Strummer in London vibes, and then the score was...straight out of 50s Hollywood. I enjoyed it anyway, but I think it could've been a lot more.
