Okay, so I think I know what's going on - or at least I'd like to think the version I've concocted in my mind is the one which it is...

See, what I thought in her first appearance was "what a ridiculously poorly written character!" Because she was clearly written to be a big bad villain-no conscience or anything like that. No subtlety or ambiguity at all. It just wasn't creative or anything (I have no appreciation of Kevin J. Anderson's novels).

But in... Planet of Twilight, her characterisation becomes somewhat interesting, with the introduction of her man (can't remember his name). Anyway I always liked to think that she became somewhat decent as a person.

(I've always thought I'd like to see a story which spans her life between PoT and her reintroduction in LotF, during the Vong War and all that - as long as Kevin J Anderson doesn't write it!)

It was a very good chapter though. I have a very bad feeling about everything that just happened though.

I loved it Jaina's warming up to Scar, but now something horrible's going to happen.

I can't really remember Planet of Twilight. I don't think it was terribly exciting. Unless you hated Callista, and you'd relish reading her last appearance.

Ok. How about that. What do we think about Callista Ming?

By the way, I'm still super-excited for an update!

My interpretation of Ben is very open hearted and childish. I want him to trust Scar in a way that only a small kid could trust someone. Also, I want Ben to have amazing insight, though he may not understand the situation fully. And of course, the kid has to be absolutely adorable!!

Ah, my dear Aussie friends... They moved here to the good ol' US of A a few years back and started coming to our church. I'm not sure where in Australia they lived, I'll have to ask them when I see them next. Actually, our discussion here sparked another with them on Saturday. It was a lot of fun talking to them about the government in Australia.

Hmmm.. Callista Ming.... well I don't remember too much about the books she was in. I read them years ago. They're coming up to read again though, as I'm trying to re-read the SW novels in chronological order. I will say that I love YodaKenobi's interpretation of her in his stories though! If you haven't read anything of his, I suggest you do. They're awesome!

Just commenting on what you interpret Ben to be like, I agree. It's kinda sad when I read stories where Ben is an emotionally unstable character. I mean, he just a toddler! And yes, being adorable in kinda important

That's awesome! I love influencing peoples lives on the other side of the world. I don't know how your friends feel, but the Australian government sucks! But everybody tolerates it because of the lack of effective opposition. I can't stand the Labor Party and Kevin Rudd's a great big douche! He was taking credit for avoiding a technical recession, when his policies were detrimental to the GDP figures!!! He's so dumb, when he tried to rig a vote in some bull**** 2020 Summit, he mucked it up! (the story is quite funny if you want to hear it - it's about republicanism!)

I thought it was cool, too! They're not too thrilled about the Australian government either. We actually spoke mostly about the Referendum a few years back that you had mentioned. From the sounds of it, I'm sure Rudd's incompetency is pretty funny. I feel bad that his ineptitude is messing up the lives of you and your fellow countrymen though.

I'm just starting to read this, and I love the concept. And Jaina not being called Jaina in public seems a lot like what they're doing with Allana in canon. Was that where you got the idea, or just a coincidence?

CA: Hahaha, yeah, he is inept, but the opposition is more inept at the moment. It's ridiculous at the moment, because in the last week we've had calls from both sides for the other to resign. It's bloody annoying though when Kevin Rudd takes the credit for avoiding a technical recession, when it was all set up by the previous government (and I don't believe we have actually avoided a recession. One indicator isn't really the best way to judge the performance of an economy). Don't feel too bad for us though, because, as I said, the previous government put us into a really good position, and we're not struggling too much - but let's hope Krudd doesn't make things worse than they should be.

JJB: Celeste and I have both had rants (Celeste about Obama and Socialism, and I about Krudd and Republicanism {though I could rant about more}). I think we need to have a rant from you! Pick anything, and we won't be judgemental!

Jaina just changed her last name from Solo to Antilles. She calls herself Jay because she doesn't want Scar to know too much about her. (Which is why Scar doesn't give even Corran, or Jaina, his real name.)

As to a rant. When I come up with a topic, I'll rant all I want.

Now to Ben Skywalker.

Well. The kid was born in a rather dangerous time in cannon and I know he's ultra-sensitive to pain. (He can hide himself in the force, Even before he had training!!) But him choosing Jacen as his mentor kind of threw me off. I mean, yeah, Anakin was the one he was "closest" with of the three, and yeah, Jaina was still recovering from a brush with the dark side during the Yuuzhan Vong war, so neither of them were present for much of his childhood. But neither was Jacen. (Five year sabbatical nonsense.)

And then the damn Swarm war happens. Jaina goes on a crazy spree and Zekk's right behind her. (Honestly the whole trilogy made me ) Ben refuses to access the force, and Jacen comes to the rescue. Jag even saw trouble coming with this move and he doesn't have the Force in cannon. (the man is truly Batman. He can read the Solos better than the Solos can read themselves!)

Then Jacen takes Ben on all sorts of crazy missions, wiping his memory after almost every one. Then Jacen starts playing with the dark side and begins to teach his apprentice.

Then Jace become Caedus and that whole new load of crap arises. Ben had many, many chances to get away from the psycho and yet he doesn't take them until Caedus kills his mother, (who, I should note, he didn't treat the best way that he could before she died). It's sad that he was the one to find his mother's body and he handled it the way any kid his age would.

All in all, Ben is a sad tale that could have been avoided if he had had more guidance from his parents and could have identified Jacen's dark arts before it was too late.

I really liked the sojourn into Wedge's head. He was always one of my favorite characters, and he was awesome in Allston's Rebel Dream duology.

Hmmm... A power for Scar... I don't know... The possibilities are practically endless in AU, although I think he's cool enough even without one. I definitely concur with your Batman statement, JJB! You gotta love Batman, whether it's Bruce Wayne or Jag Fel!

Ben Skywalker....

Well so far, I'd have to say I've enjoyed his character. I wasn't too sure of how I felt about the story thread with him shutting off from the Force. They kinda left that one high and dry, because by LOTF he was a lightsaber weilding, card-carrying Jedi. Personally, I'd like to see another book dealing with his return to using the Force, and maybe even building the depth of relationship between he and Jacen, that thaey expected us to just take for granted. (Sound like the J/TK thread again...?)

I think they kind of overdid the whole 'rebellious-teenager' act in LOTF to a certain extent, but again, I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that the authors gave us almost nothing to base our perception of Ben's relationship with his parents off of. He was still affectionate with them in DN, but now we get to LOTF and he's totally stand off-ish. Ok, maybe it could realistically happen given the proper character development, but I want to see that progression in the character. I thought a lot of the characterizations in LOTF were weak like that, which was frustrating to a reader/writer who likes to get into people's heads.

One thing I'm glad of, though, is that so far, in FOTJ, they're continuing the characterizations they used in LOTF and building off of them. I really like the relationship between Ben and Luke at this point, since it definitely seems more natural. Especially when they show Luke's difficulty balancing being Dad and Grand Master. Plus, Ben's teenage persona is more in line with what you'd expect him to be- it's really easy to see some Anakin Skywalker traits coming through. That alone makes me happy- so long as he doesn't go to the dark side.

Ok, well I think it's time for me to get started on my . I was a total nerd last night and went to the midnight showing of Transformers. I didn't get in until almost 4 am, and I know I'm going to be feeling it as the afternoon wears on. It was totally worth the lack of sleep, though. Especially considering all the people that were checking out my car and shouting, "Look! It's Bumblebee!"

Yeah, you both tend to make mostly good points there. Especially Celeste, about how we're supposed to be taking the whole Jacen/Ben relationship for granted (not that sort of relationship... I hope... Not that I'd be surprised). I'd expect/hope to see a novel bridging Dark Nest and LotF.
Ummm, yeah that was weird how he somehow managed to master detaching himself from the force at about 6 years old.
at LotF, I wouldn't so much as blame Ben for being recalcitrant in noticing Jacen's turn, because Jacen had him in his thrall to the point that Ben thought that Jacen had all the answers. And even that comes into conflict at times before Mara's death (Jacen torturing that lady, and a couple of other times...). Finally he does come around and see sense (that would be after he convinced Jacen to bombard Kashyyk... no hard feelings). I do also like how they're doing the whole Father/Son relationship in FotJ. I liked the bit where Luke asks Ben to kill him if he started acting like Jacen.

And I'm eagerly awaiting a rant from you JJB. Pick anything - no matter how controversial!

True. But the point of the matter was that Jaina hasn't felt Luke since he was taken, the automatic assumption is that their is ysalamiri around him, blocking him from the force. She didn't say it was safe. She said it felt "right". Big Dif.

Okay, Zekk is serendipitous in that he has the uncanny ability to find things even when he's not looking for them. Example: he was walking though the woods and stopped by the river, meeting Jag and Jaina there though he hadn't been necessarily looking for them.
