My Michelle is a totally underrated song. It was only overshadowed because of all the other great songs on Appetite for Destruction. If it had come out on another album, it would be considered one of their top-tier classics.

A few comments on some the tracks:
The track with Debbie Wiseman and RPO comes from a little collection I bought by chance after seeing RPO perform at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago. It's a great CD with a selection of some of Wiseman's scores. The instrumentation is perfect and very well conducted.

Tindersticks' song is very bombastic and the typical yearning for lost love. The string section really makes the music stand out and keeps it on the right side of pathetic. This used to be the type of music I, as a college student, listened to during late nights.

Elegant Machinery is an obscure Swedish synthband that released a few CDs during 1990's. Nowadays their lyrics come across as unintentionally hilarious (a particular favourite is "your voice illuminates my doubtfulness"). But this song is a very sweet track about overcoming bullying and the music is very similar to Yazoo.

Baby, I’m in the Mood for You – Bob Dylan

I’m shocked it took three of these to get to a Dylan song. This isn’t one of his best known songs, but it’s on Biograph, one of the best box sets in history. If memory serves, it’s a first take on a song that ended up not being released on an album proper. It’s a silly song and Dylan sings it a breakneck pace. It’s maybe the most high energy song he’s ever done and it’s just him and the acoustic.

My Life is in Your Hands – Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir

Probably the best black gospel choir working today. They’ve got a tight band, but this one is slower and less high-tempo. It’s got a beautiful melody and is a wonderful, wonderful, moving song.

Search & Destroy – Iggy & the Stooges

It’s the first, and most ferocious, song on Raw Power, one of the most seminal punk albums of all time, but it’s even better in the remix edition, though this song wasn’t remixed. Regardless, I think this may be the most testosterone soaked song in music history. The entire punk genre is essentially an attempt to equal this song; it maybe never did.

He is Exalted – Twila Paris

God, I love how eclectic this list is. Acoustic folk, gospel choir, insane early punk rock and now this, which is the template for the modern worship song. It’s repetitive, catchy, high-energy. The entire worship genre flows right out of this and, as with Raw Power and punk, it only rarely, if ever, reached these heights again.

Already Gone – Eagles

Does this radio staple need a defense? Nah. It isn’t cool in some circles to still love the Eagles, but that is what I do: love them. This one’s a classic; like most of their songs (except Life in the frigging Fast Lane), it never gets old, no matter how many times you hear it on the oldies station.

It’s All Over Now – The Rolling Stones

Old school Stones. Say no more.

Promenade – Modest Mussorgsky, Leonard Bernstein

This short piece is from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. I think Bernstein’s recording with the New York Phil is one of, if not the, best recording of this composition.

You Drive Me Ape – The Dickies

If you don’t know The Dickies, get their compilation album. This fantastic seminal punk song is completely insane, totally thrashing and brutally breakneck, as most of their songs are. Points for what is probably the most insane guitar solo ever recorded.

Down to the River to Pray – Alison Krauss

Off the fantastic O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack album. Krauss has the voice of an angel, so she’s the perfect pick for this old-school gospel track.

Streams – Irish Film Orchestra

This is the title track from a great group project about suffering and pain. Proceeds went to some suicide hotlines. The tracks by gospel artists, of which there are ten, are all fantastic. Cindy Morgan’s Job is probably her best work; on this track, the song is arranged for orchestral instrumental. It’s an aching, pained orchestral piece that never fails to move me deeply.

Gossip - Classified

One of the first tracks I ever heard by Classified almost 10 years ago. It's amazing to see how far he's come from being virtually unknown to being regularly played on the radio (in Canada that is ). Interestingly enough there's a line where he says "Trying to quit my job, make a living off my pencil." Definitely one of his best songs.

Halls Of Science 4 - Aperture Science Psychoacoustics Laboratory

One of the main level themes from the Portal 2 soundtrack. Great music for a great game.

Intro - Jedi Mind Tricks

Every JMT album has an intro with this one being from A History Of Violence. Meh, it's alright I guess....the album as a whole was pretty mediocre.

Listen - Classified

More Classified! Not much to say....just another solid song with a nice beat.

Africa Must Wake Up - Nas and Damian Marley (featuring K'naan)

The perfect song to close off this amazing album (Distant Relatives). Nas is as good as he's ever been, Damian's singing and lyrics complement him really well.

Bleed It Out - Linkin Park

A fun, catchy song. Not much more to say than that.

Trapped Under Ice - Metallica

Old school, fast paced Metallica. Not one of my favourites on the album but still pretty good.

St. Jimmy - Green Day

Pretty much what you'd expect from Green Day. Love the way the song ends.

Ed-Ucation (featuring Eddie Griffin)

Hilarious skit from Dr. Dre's 2001. I can listen to this all the time and never get sick of it. "WHAT HAPPENED TO JUST FALLING IN LOVE WITH A ***** BUS PASS?!"

More Portal 2 music. I only played the single player once so there's only a few tracks that really stood out to me. This one's pretty mellow.

 

Trapped Under Ice. Wow, there's a Metallica song you don't hear much about. You're right though, it's far from the best on Ride the Lightning. That one has . . . Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Call of Ktulu and For Whom the Bell Tolls, right? (from memory) That was the great half of the album; the other four songs weren't so hot. RtL was kind of a dry-run for Master of Puppets, though, which has got to still be their masterpiece.

Fitness Club Fiasco - Forest City
This is a fun electronic track perfect for Spring. The original version is a dancetrack whereas this remix makes the song more mellow. It's the perfect soundtrack for strolling through the centre of a cosmopolitan city on a warm April evening.

Depeche Mode - It's no good
It's no good was Depeche Mode's return to electronic pop after a few years of grunge-inspired music. The music is suitably cold for a song about doomed love. For me, this is a bit of a special era since it was the first time I followed news about the creation of the album from the announcement of recording to the actual release.

Yazoo - Ode to boy
One of the weaker tracks on Yazoo's excellent second album.

Bruce Springsteen - Valentine's day
This is the final track on the Tunnel of love-album and I rarely listen to this particular song. Having said that, the lyrics are excellent and the perfect end of a record filled with musings on all aspects of love and relationships.

The Pogues - South Australia
Great fun with its energetic blend of punk and Irish folkmusic.

McCarthy - The Myth of the North-South dive
As always, McCarthy means a good catchy pop tune with ironic lyrics about all the wrongs in British society during Thatcher.

Pet Shop Boys - Love comes quickly
Love comes quickly was probably one of the first pop songs I liked. My older brothers were big fans of Pet Shop Boys and played their music all the time. This is still a good song about how sudden love can come and how much it can change.

Steve Jablonsky - Prime
One of the highlights of the Transformers movies was the score, particularly this one. Absolutely adore the chorus and the strings.

The Smiths - Panic
The best thing about this track is the part with "because the music they play it says nothing to me about life".

Depeche Mode - Perfect
This is a good pop song with a strong melody, almost perfectly produced and excellent vocals.
