No, I think it's actually good to at least try to teach yourself to appreciate different works of art. There has been plenty of stuff that I've liked pretty much immediately, but there has also been a lot I've heard that I really didn't like at first, but grew to appreciate (even love, in some cases). It actually bugs me a little that I can't appreciate jazz... I feel like I should have been able to train myself to at least appreciate it a little bit... lol.

I think I may have to see it live, at some point... seeing things performed live almost always gives me an appreciation (or more of an appreciation) for it... ties me to it more personally, I guess.

That's very true. I guess maybe a better way of saying it, instead of "try", would be "to force yourself to like it". Part of it has to come naturally, at least at some point. But the live exposure part helps a lot too, and not just for music... a lot of visual art is that way too (seeing it in person).

Totally makes sense... to some people, music is background noise, and to really hear it takes effort in concentration. To others, it's front and center... almost to the point that it takes serious effort to pay attention to what is going on outside of it--people probably experience both at different times, but I'm sure there are some who experience one more than the other.

I'm adding "see live jazz" to my 2013 shortlist.

    Oh, and...

I call anything "early jazz" that came BM (Before Miles). :p

I tend to find most modern jazz intolerable. It's sort of purposely difficult and esoteric; it all started with Bitches Brew, I think, when it became hip to measure the greatness of jazz in direct proportion to how nasty it sounded. Anything up through the sixties though is generally pretty great.

Oh I love Bitches Brew, actually. And a lot of the jazz rock that came out of that. But that's way over the hill now.

Thanks for the recommendation; I bought a couple of the Cream BBC Sessions tracks from iTunes last night (SWLABR and Tales Of Brave Ulysses... will probably get some of the others at some point). This performance of SWLABR is a beast... even with the annoying voiceover by the BBC host at the start and finish... haha.

All it's missing is a Beatles song and some video game music and you'd have a spot on representation of my iTunes library.

Funny enough, the version of Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm came up shortly after this selection. :p
