*peeks around and looks for southern belles before replying*

The formality being taken as an insult reminds me of a true southern belle. She says things that sound formal and, on the surface, quite polite; but when translated by someone in the know, you find out you have been seriously insulted!

Wow, this board is hopping over the last several days...This was on page 7.

Hmm...an encyclopedia....Well, as my beta will be unavailable for a few days, you, my readers, may just get some reprints from the Encyclopedia Kalindica.... 8-} ;)

    Catching up...

Great posts. :) Poor Dorme, feeling the pressure to live up to the family's standards and not being sure of all the etiquette. I like Ivo's great-uncle's reaction to seeing the necklace on Dorme.

Anakin, Anakin--should have gotten those healers to give you some painkiller before this. :p Looks like he has people looking after his and Padme's interests though--that's good. ;)

    Looking forward to more. :)

Welcome back! I'd thought the Beyond the Saga Board had swallowed you whole.
    Apparently I?m rather indigestible. :p

Ah, the formalities of nobility? Nothing a few Force-chokes couldn?t fix. [face_mischief]

Seriously, though, I enjoyed Dormé?s thoughts on entering this alien (for lack of a better word) subculture. With all the time she?s spent in politics, it?s quite the statement that she feels so out of her element in this one. Then again, part of that is simply nerves? [face_love]

This story keeps on getting better! :p

I really love the detail that goes into the formalities and backstories, etc. Really makes everything so exciting to read. Poor Padme, tho! She and Anakin need to meet up already!

Cant wait for whatever's next! :D

    Hello readers and lurkers!

Not a new post, but I did want to warn you all that my family and I are moving into our temporary residence for the next eight weeks or so, while our house is drastically renovated ( take a look at pre-1930 pictures of the Battleship Arizona with 1941 pics to get an idea of the scale of the work. :( ). Ergo, I will have dicey internet access for a few days, so, I give you the first of several brief excerpts from the 'Encyclopedia Kalindica' Y.A. 2098 edition.

Kalinda--- Primary world of a heavily populated Mid-Rim system and Captial /founding member of the Commonwealth of Kalinda and its possessions and protectorates among the stars (lit. translation; governmental form is a Federal Monarchy with the hereditary throne resting in the hands of the House Arzhan-Dunlind after the extinction of the House Arzhan-Santrano with the death of Toralivo II in Y.A. 2049). Current population 8.678 billion on world; three inhabited moons account for an additional 1.23 billion sentinents. Largest City: Desdarni in the County of Dendari, capital of the Commonwealth since its founding, pop. 31.1 million (41 degress 2 minutes north, 4 degrees west) .

The third planet of yellow-white star Zeltrana (meaning 'Light of the Sky' in Old High Kalindian), Kalinda is world of moderate size (approximately 7,000 km in radius) and gravity (approx. 10.78 m/s2). From orbit the visitor is struck by the blue, green and white color of the world. Many have said that it would closely resemble Alderaan from Orbit, but for the pale green and yellow rings encircling the planet at 52 degrees to it's axis of rotation.

The world is orbited by 3 moons ranging in size from almost 2,000 km in radius to 103 km. All are settled, and the ring system is widely thought to be the remnants of a small moon destroyed by Kalinda's gravity.

The world is known for it's wide variety of climates and for both its natural and man made beauty. It is also known for its devotion to the world's history and culture.

Typically visited sites include, the Grand Cathedral of the Archonate, where the Archon of the Kalinadian church administers a formidable religious heirachy from his throne of quartz, the Grand Opera of the Commonwealth, Mount Micklaren, the Wet Forests of Dunlind....

A quick comment to my friend Darth_Lex:

Ah, the formalities of nobility? Nothing a few Force-chokes couldn?t fix.

Yes, but in thi scase, a fairly significant percentage of the nobility might a) force-choke you back or b)use the Force to increase the molecular motion of the air just above your skin significantly and thus raising the temp. there significantly. (i.e. until you ignited)

Ok, only one of them would do that............

Guess I forgot to reply ? oops.

Ge-Harza?s lips gently brushed the back of Dormé?s hand just behind her knuckles. As he lifted his head away from her hand, his gray eyes locked onto her brown, and he said, ?Welcome to my family, my lady.?

Very nice touch, especially in front of all the witnesses. Kalinadians are such a bold bunch; they always remind me of Klingons ? not in features, mind you, but their boldness and sense of pride.

It?s good to see Ivo being so patient w/Dormé in this situation. I?m sure she feels confused if not overwhelmed, but she?s handling it w/grace.

Good post. Too bad you?re having ?net issues. Ah, the pains of moving, even temporarily.

Yet again, not a new post, but another background bonus from the Encyclopedia Kalindica, Y.A. 2098 edition. (N.B. Current Commonwealth dating is Year of the Arzhan 2099)

Dunlind--- Duchy (area approx. 3,000 sq, Kilometers, population approx. 800,000) and name of it's main city located in the northwest of the continent of Zhastrasa on Kalinda (44 degrees N, 10 degrees W). The Duchy is primarily made up of a wooded coastal plain running into the foothills of the Northwestern-End of the Zhanian Mountains. The area is primarily agro and aquaculutural in economic bent with some light industry (mainly consumer goods and the well know Edrias Blaster works).

The area, particularly the vast park centered around the Ducal seat at the firth of Dunlindia, is renowned for the somewhat wild beauty of its wet, evergreen forests.

The Duchy is famed for its hunting and fishing, and serves as one of the few remaining 'native' habitats for the Nexu imported to Kalinda in the dim past.

The Duchy passed into the hands of the House Arzhan through the marriage of Felintanna Arsdrese, heiress to the Duchy to the Protector Heinsa II (Y.A. 1747). The first Protector to take very significant interest, beyond hunting parties, was Zarik V (r. Y.A. 1954-1982), who substantially rebuilt the Castle at Dunlindia as an alternate Protectoral residence. His son, Corlashilon XIV (r. Y.A. 1982-2042)often resided at Dunlindia during his long reign, and casued much scandel by moving his mistress into residence there.

Corlashilon planned that the title Duke of Dunlind would become a subsidary one given to the second child of the Protector, just as he declared that the eldest son, starting with his son Toralivo, should bear the ancient title of Prince of Zhania. Alas, fate intervened and Toralivo was succeeded by his younger Brother, Brenkal, the Duke of Dunlind, after a brief reign. Since that time, the Protectoral heir has held the title and resided at Dunlindia.

    The Castle at Dunllindia:

Well, I have sometime on a steamy Friday afternoon at work...So, the time for replies has finally arrived.....

laurethiel1138---- Yes, you again have the first post...Have you considered changing your screen name to 'Quickdraw1138'?

Thank you for your appreciation of my etiquette insertions. The formality thing is actual an interesting little piece that flows from the culture. The Kalinadains are extraordinary family orientated and well know as ultra-loyal to their friends. As such, formality within the family or friendship in terms of behavior, if not necessarily in terms of speech, seems natural. After all, formality implies distance, detachment and severibility of relationships. These are not particular Kalinadian goals.

dianethx--- Thank you so much. Don't worry, I know that you're reading and I know the hassle that can be real life.

qingauk--- Thank you, and see above for a bit of explanation of the social rules.

geo3--- Ok, so you made me blush with extraordinaryily high praise.

I am glad that you find her worthy... ;)

Of course, next comes ....well that would be telling...but see the end of this post for a free preview... [face_devil]

MissPadme--- Thank you, and I have been posting bits of the Encyclopedia Kalindica for your edification....

PadawanKitara--- Similar idea, but with a twist...See above.

anakin_girl--- Thak you and congratulations yet again.

Yes, Dorme does feel some pressure to live up to expectations in an alien environment, but she'll have little problem in the long run.

    VaderLVR64--- Behind...Well, read faster 8-} :)

Thank you for reading, and Dorme will be ok, even if a little stressed.

Darth_Lex--- Well, I think that I responded to part of your reply earlier.

Dorme is nervous, and she is operating in an alien tongue and in an environment that is quite un-Naboo. She'll get the hang of it, soon.

    More later.

QueenSabe7--- Thank you so much for thinking that it continues to improve. Authors like to hear such things.

Arriss--- Forgot to reply ??? The horror of it all... ;)

Well, the Kalinadians are forthright and bawdy in an Elizabethan/Jacobite way, but they are also bound to a quirky code of conduct. Dorme is confused, but far from overwhelmed.

    More soon....

I hope that people are enjoying my background posts, I can't really tell. Feel freee to comment!!!!

Oh, and Lurkers, Come on out and say something....I don't bite.

Now, a sneek peek at the next post:

Shuddering slightly, Dorme took a deep breath. Then, staring at the enraged Kalinadian woman, Dorme said, "So, you see Elica Arhantia, I don't hate you and I certainly don't envy you. I pity you."

Well, I now have reliable internet service at the temporary residence.

So, my hope is to get the next piece to my Beta in the next 48 hours or so, and hopefully post it by week's end.

I would note that if all goes as planned there are only two more posts and an epilogue left to this...

    As to the new coments,

NinjaSkywalker--- No need to panic...More story shortly.

PadawanKitara--- No need to beg...more soon.

QueenSabe7--- Hmm....Can't reveal too much, but it is ugly.....

    See you all soon.

A quick note to my readers, the next post is with my beta.

I have decided that the next post works better as two pieces. So, you'll get a 23000 worder and then an about 1,200 worder. Thus, the storywill last three more post and an epilogue.

    See you all soon.

Chapter 30 Part IV Setting the Stage

Padmé had been surprised when a Kalinadian that she?d met only briefly on Geonosis and at her residence, Lieutenant Gentian Artoras, interrupted her covert surveillance of Anakin.

?Senator, a pleasure to see you again,? the dark blond in dark green had lilted to her.

?The pleasure is mine, Lieutenant,? Padmé had replied neutrally as she tried to look around the Lieutenant in an attempt to see the object of her attention. She suspected that her attempts not to be obvious about it were failing miserably.

?Well.? Lieutenant Artoras began, ?I was sent to ask you to join our little circle of Ivo?s closest friends. We?ve already added Lady Lankrerrie?s sister and?and another.?

Padmé?s attention suddenly was riveted to the Kalinadian Officer in front of her. Without thinking, she blurted out, ?Who??

Lieutenant Artoras smiled knowingly, and said, ?Someone that you know, and that I believe that you might wish to see.?

    ---------------------------------------

Anakin sipped his brandy and concentrated on the warmth it spread across his throat as he turned away from his view of Ivo and Dormé making their slow promenade about the floor. This was undoubtedly their night, and he could not begrudge them it in any way.

Anakin once again found himself in the curious situation of being alone in a crowd. He had been introduced to the various Kalinadians in this circle of Ivo?s friends that he did not know, but he found himself mostly ignoring them. He knew that he should be flattered to be pulled into such a group, but he was preoccupied.

Genty?s bringing her here?oh, Force, what will I?what can I say to her here?

Anakin was startled out of his thoughts by the sound of Genty?s lilting Basic.

?Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce Senator Amidala of Naboo.?

Anakin froze. He heard Genty ushering Padmé about the circle individually introducing her, starting with Ivo?s sister and working he way toward Anakin. Now she was being introduced to Anselian Pharskarel, two places to his left. His mouth went dry.

?Milady, this is Anselian Pharskarel. She?s the lead mezzo-soprano in the Grand Opera.?

As Anakin heard the swish of Anselian?s gown accompanying her curtsey, he also heard a voice that he?d been waiting to hear for days. It answered, ?Oh, yes, Dormé?s spoken of you. She?s said that you?ve been of immense help to her.? Anakin?s heart began to race.

?I only try to be helpful, Senator,? Anselian replied.

Anakin looked up to see Korva staring at him over his whiskey glass with a twinkling eye. Turning slightly away from Korva?s gaze, Anakin met Genty?s. While Padmé talked with Lady Araila, Korva?s fiancée, Genty grinned an impish grin. In less than a heartbeat, Anakin knew what Genty was thinking. He was remembering Arcainia and the drunken ranting of a distressed and unhappy Anakin Skywalker.

Suddenly the grin disappeared from Genty?s face, and he cleared his throat. Then he said, ?Milady, last but not least, one of the newest members of our little circle, Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Padawan, Warrior, and, he tells us, the greatest Podracer that anyone has ever seen.?

As Padmé looked up at him, Anakin found himself becoming lost in her deep brown eyes. He barely registered her slight smile or the fact that Korva and Lash had moved deftly to block the line of sight between Anakin and Master Obi-Wan, where he was in conversation with Senator Organa.

Nor did Anakin notice the subtle smile that crossed the face of the Supreme Chancellor as he watched Padmé and Anakin over the fleshy shoulder of Senator Orn Free Taa from his position under the massive painting of a battle in the snow.

    ----------------------------------------------------

?But Master Jedi, surely you can see how your viewpoint might be labeled as extremist?? Gersalis Exarch Ardedes asked of the short, green Jedi in an increasingly exasperated tone.

    The green Jedi har

This post was full of observations, both large and small, that in some ways sum up the reasons why I enjoy this story so much. Here are some of them:

Padmé had been surprised when a Kalinadian that she?d met only briefly on Geonosis and at her residence, Lieutenant Gentian Artoras, interrupted her covert surveillance of Anakin.

Heehee! She?s checking him out ? she?s hyper-aware of his presence.

He barely registered her slight smile or the fact that Korva and Lash had moved deftly to block the line of sight between Anakin and Master Obi-Wan, where he was in conversation with Senator Organa.

I love your portrayal of Ivo (and now Dorme?s) friends. They?re such a brotherhood, they would do anything for another. And now they are pulling Anakin and Padmé into their folds. I truly enjoyed the teamwork they used to get Anakin and Padmé together, and Elica?s understanding that these people will become the planet?s new ?power group.?

?It is Master Jedi, it is. First, you confuse the moral impulses of the God-touched with the nature of the Harmonies themselves. The Harmonies set in motion at the creation of the Universe, harnessed and shared by the Gods, are morally neutral. There is no inherent darkness or light to them. The Harmonies simply exist. Then, you compound your initial mistake by fostering a way of life devoid of attachments, passions, of involvement, of meaning, of anything that keeps one grounded in the prosaic and real.?

And then, of course, you can never have too much theological discussion between the Jedi and the Kalinadians! I was quite interested in the observation that the Jedi might well ?have a hand in creating whatever it is that they fear so strongly.? Too true, I fear.

?Don?t worry, I?m a big boy. What?s my fault is my fault.?

See, this is why Ivo is such a great character. Among all his other stellar qualities, he?s a grownup!

Elica?s ?target.? Well put! I can?t wait to see what she ?tries.

    Great post!

I loved the swirl of personalities, the way the ebb and flow of conversation just ups the tension of the gathering. You really do parties so very well. I liked how Ivo manipulated Anakin into saying a Jedi could escort Padme back to Naboo. And now all he has to do is convince Obi-Wan. Should be interesting to say the least.

Oh, I want to know where that castle really is. Looks quite lovely.

    Great job as always.

Well, the ball is certainly living up to its billing. :D

Palpatine is such a slimy devil. [face_devil]

Ivo's machinations to get Anakin and Padme together were great. No wonder he made such an effective Moff. ;)

The conversation between the Exarch and Yoda was a hoot. You could write a whole viggie just of that and it'd be awesome.

Finally, can't wait to see the Elica/Dorme showdown... [face_cowboy]

I agree. If Elica thinks she''s going to spring some sort of a threat on Dorme, I think she will find herself in way over her head. And if she is heading Ivo's way, get over it girl. He is way passed you! [face_talk_hand]

Oh my.. yes I finally was able to get here and have the time for this lovely chapter. I still have grades to do so this can't be too long. Believe me.. I would much rather be reading this a few times for proper digestion. This chapter seems to be setting the stage quite well and I love how you have the intervention of friends who understand love, unlike Yoda, helping out. You have used some info from ep3 I see! very cool to build on that idea with the Yoda discussion.
