Sometimes in life, one comes across strange and peculiar people. Such people are called Violent Violet Mena... Let's try that again. Such people may have odd habits, curious manners of speaking or behave as if from outer space. One such group of people, I have come across in my travels to lands far and wide are these grazing ungulates (YES!!), who insist that because a soup is a liquid form of food, a dish more running than solid, one must refer to consuming it as "drinking soup". To this, I say "have you gone Wocky?!" But no, you don't eat soup, they say. Do you chew soup? And I must confess that soups usually don't need chewing. I believe when chewing is required is the nexus point at which a soup becomes a stew, but I digress. Yes, a soup doesn't need to be chewy, but you still consume it with a spoon. You don't down it from the side of the saucer. You don't pour it in a cup (although some people do that too). But I think the best argument in my favour is that the word 'drink' is reserved for beverages, and soup is decidedly not a beverage. It is a dish. It is food. So, you eat soup.

Where does the C of the JC fall in this question?

 

I just ate soup for lunch.

 

I always say "I had soup" to avoid offending sensibilities.

They really ought to just make soup a verb. I soup, you soup, he/she/we soup...

 

Eat. However, I cannot abide it when people:

1) Lift the bowl to slurp the last bits
2) Don't use a soup spoon
3) I cannot stress enough - as you are getting towards the last remnants of soup, tip the bowl away from you. Not towards. Away. Then spoon in the last mouthful/s of soup.

 

I thought what made it a stew is how the meat is prepared--if it's stewed.

 

One must eat soup. Invalids, however, may drink broth.

 

This is a very simple problems. Humans eat for primary nourishment. Drinking is not for this purpose, except if someone is on a special diet or religious stricture, in which case they are not acting for primary nourishment in that period, so it is the class of exceptions that proves the rule. Now then, because soups are for primary nourishment, we must say that we have eaten them. Whereas where they not, we would have to say that we drank them.

 

So then you eat a smoothie?

 

No soup for you!

And of course you eat soup. It's true that not all soups require chewing, but the manner of consumption is more akin to eating than drinking. Wocky and Violet are also right in that it is a dish and made for primary nutrition. And many (most?) soups do require some chewing, unless they're just plain broth (and I include thicker, creamier broths in this mix as well.)

 

What do you mean when? When you eat a smoothie for lunch because you don't have a lot of time. Many of them have the same ingredients you would find in a soup.

 

I have literally never heard of anyone doing that. Let alone a soup smoothie. What are you even talking about?

 

I am shocked that you have never heard of anyone doing something completely normal that happens every day.
