What is it exactly? Is it the starwars equivalent to marijuana or other elicit drugs? Why does the Empire consider it a banned substance? Did the old Republic share the same view?

If it is a narcotic, that would make Han Solo a drug smuggler, and he's a hero? Does this reveal Lucas's oppinion on the war on drugs?

"Spice is illegal! It's a euphoric, it alters moods, and the use of it leads to the use of worse substances, and a man who will run spice will run anything!"

    *StormTroopers barge into Leia's ship*

C-3PO: "This is terrible! We'll be sold to the Spice mines of Castle, or smashed into who-knows-what!!"

Is this the reference to Spice? I don't remember it anywhere else. And now you know where spice fits in Bro.

Apparently spice mining is pretty bad for droids.

    PUNISHMENT

Han wasn't specifically a drug smuggler. He was an "independent business" with a ship for hire and would transport anything if the price was right. Anything except slaves, of course. (And in HAN SOLO'S REVENGE, we see what happens when Han is tricked into trying to run slaves. :) )

Well if he ran spice, then he's a spice runner wouldn't you say?

It seems the Empire doesn't care about spice as long as their the dealer

Then again, those Stormies didn't care about people smoking it in the mos eisly cantina. I think there was one guy that appeared to be smoking out of a starwars water pipe of sorts.

But I don't even know if they smoke it? Maybe they put it on toast?

Sort of brief description if spice....

Spice as it is known is mined from Kessel. The only place that exists on Kessel is a Prison and it is the prisoners who mine it. There are different types of Spice the strongest being Glitterstim. It reacts to light so it is mined and produced underground at Kessel. It is produced in small capsules that when a 'user' takes it they break the capsule. The glitterstim then reacts to light. The user then consumes it orally. Glitterstim stimulates the mind and for a brief time gives the consumer powers of mind reading etc.. The long term effects are that it eventually eats the mind away leading to paranoia and memory loss

If you want to know in detail about spice read The Han Solo Trilogy Book 1: The Pardise Snare by A.C Crispin, its got some interesting information about the spice mines of Ylesia. In fact it has some good stuff about why Han is a rogue but that is a story for the EU forum!

    "Spice spice baby!" Ow...
"Spice Girls rule" Oh god I'm sorry!
"Thatsa apicey meataball!!" Stop me before I reference again!

Anyway, Han is a Pirate, a mercenary, and Spice actualy has a very important role in his story, when an imperial ship boarded him to make an inspection, Han had to jettison a large spice shipment, thus making Jabba very unhappy... and you know the rest.

    "Three Blind Spice!" Kill me!

My guess is that is stems from Lucas' blatent rip-off of melange from DUNE. "Aura Spice" made an appearance in his first few drafts of ANH and somehow found it's way, albiet in a varied form, in the final script treatment.

isn't kessel shaped like a potato?

seeing as how star wars breaks the law of astronomical physics, how was the planet Byss ( i think it's Byss ) destroyed, and yet, can still harbor life and stay in its own field of gravity.
