Spider-Man 3 Discussion Thread - Spoilers

James Cromwell has joined the cast of Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3 as Captain Stacy, the father of Bryce Dallas Howard's character, Gwen.

In the "Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, Stacy dies a heroic death as he saves a child during a battle between Spider-Man and another supervillain. Peter Parker love interest Gwen Stacy (Howard) ends up blaming Spider-Man for her father's death.

Cromwell joins returning cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco as well as Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and Theresa Russell. Sam Raimi is directing.

Cromwell is best known for starring in the "Babe" movies, the first of which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor, and as a villain in L.A. Confidential. His recent role on Six Feet Under earned him an Emmy mention in 2003.

 

I weould kinda like them to kill off Mary Jane about half way through so that then they can just focus on the action. Like the first half having a little not a lot of action, then a fight where MJ is killed then the second half is practically pure action. And I would prefer this third be the last or soon it will get screwed up like the Batman franchise

 

i'm thinking that they'll kill her off towards the end and leave it as a cliffhanger where spiderman 4 will be about spiderman and venom

 

I'd kill off Mary Jane as the second plot point leaving the third act as the acts of revenge like a well scripted film should be.

As far as the new cast additions. Cromwell should be pretty good. Seems that they are sparing no expense for an all-star cast. This will rule May 2007. No matter if Shrek 3 is coming out or not.

When comic book fans line up to see Tobey Maguire portray web-slinger Peter Parker in the upcoming third installment of the "Spider-man" franchise they will notice Alexandria Hotel as one of the movie's filming locales. Scenes were recently shot at this turn-of-the century Los Angeles landmark, which is rumored to harbor the spirit of the "lady in black."

 

Is Cromwell going to deliver his "That'll do pig, that'll do." from Babe. I wonder who he would say it to.

i wonder who Cromwell's character will die at the hands of. assuming that they go w/ the comics and he dies in this one. will it be Venom or Sandman?

 

I don't know. Depends on what part of the movie. If it's early on, then it's obviously Sandman. Even if it's the plot point going into Act III, I still say Sandman, but if it's during the final battle it could be either Sandman or Venom. Think they're saving Topher for a while.

 

i'm thinking it'll be sandman killing him early on in the movie because i can see MJ being killed as a result of the battle with venom towards the end.

 

What would be the point of killing him early on?

Maybe it would set up the Gwen hates Spider-man angle but you could establish that easily enough without an on screen death.

If you use him it would seem that you would take the detective thing to the end, culminating with (from the comics) the end of speculation on if Capt Stacy knows who Spidey is or not.

I could see them adding on to the "mistaken identity" angle by having Venom who gets mistaken for Spidey do the actual killing. It could give you your out on how the movie Venom would know Peter's big secret too. If you have a dying Capt. Stacy telling Venom "Peter, take care of my daughter".

Maybe it will jell once we get a little more on people's roles.

 

The mistaken identity is quite intriguing. That just gives JJJ more fuel to add to the fire, since he has a habit in trying to turn the city against Spider-Man. I'm hoping they make Cromwell a strongly built character from an common sense and intellectual POV.

 

I think they would have to. The comic character was short lived to say the least but in that time he left an indelible impact. To do it justice the movie character would have to be even stronger in order to get the same impact in just 2 hrs.

 

i can't wait to see the first movie posters for this. i figure we'll see the 1st ones by the end of August. and that's when i think we'll get our first shot of the villains because if i remember correctly we saw our first shot of Doc Ock that august before Spiderman 2 came out

 

Hopefully we might see those posters even sooner cause while Spider-Man 2 came out toward the end of the summer movie season, the end of July, 3 is supposed to come out on May 4!

What to tag the trailer to? Casino Royale? Eragon? Evan Almighty?

 

we have to think that there'll be 2 trailers. the teaser and the main one. teaser appears sometime in november/december and the full one in february or march. i could see there being a tv spot for it during that superbowl along w/ possible spots for halo, transformers, FF2, and other movies

 

Ugh. November/December for the teaser sounds like a long time away.

I feel like I'm waiting for Episode III all over again.

 

i remember the original teaser for the 1st one. where the robbers are making the get away in a helicopter and it gets caught in the web between the WTC towers. that would've been a cool scene

 

yeah that was awesome! I wish they would have kept it in.....

 

They didn't even keep it in the trailer for long...

They cut out the WTC part after 9/11 in theatres.
