It sounds like a racial slur because some people are morons, Even. As in, if anyone was to tell me they think the word is racist, and I explained the etymology to the Latin word niger and how niggardly did not evolve from this path and they still thought it sounded racist, I would conclude they're a moron and tell them an offensive joke or seven. I would do this, because I would want to put their heart under as much strain as possible so that they went into cardiac arrest and died. This would be a wonderful outcome, because the world needs less uptight, stupid people who manufacture outrage.

(That's also notwithstanding the fact the "n-word" is a uniquely American racial slur but Americans are culturally retarded (used in the correct and not pejorative way, mods) and think American values, experiences, and slang are normative.)

Concerning the latter, burning a fag on-campus was quite enjoyable & relaxing, though occasionally I was met with some resistance.
