I have it on good authority that a new abbreviated trailer will debut this Wednesday.

I know this belongs in the "You know you're a nerd when..." thread, but when people say "I have it on on good authority" I always picture Gambit from the X-Men saying it because of a line he said in the X-Men comics, bragging about how he'll outlive them all.

Today's PUAs learned from watching Gambit in the animated series.

You know, watching that Otaking video for the first time in ages, all I could think was "I know you browse /m/ but surely not everything needs to be an Itano Circus."

It's the needlessly obfuscating fan term for what all of the smoke and missile trails are doing - it's a somewhat distinctive visual calling card for an animator named Ichiro Itano, who worked on Gundam and Macross, amongst other things. Whenever anyone else does it it just strikes me as really gratuitous aping.

So basically I am mad; mad about cartoon smoke.

I'm mad because anime isn't that great and I'm not saying I like the visuals of the Clone Wars/Rebels either, but why do we need to copy the Japanese at animation when their animation isn't that great?

He said, looking at his Archer icon meaningfully.

Eh, much like anything the label is so broad that there's some good stuff and a whole lot of disposable garbage (Admittedly I watch too much of the latter to really judge people's preferences), but I think because it's generally allowed to be more superficially mature it's easy to prop up as a "desirable" style, particularly in nerdy crowds because everyone wants their pet obsession to be taken seriously. Certainly I wouldn't want to pick one kind of animation as the "right" one.

So I guess I'm agreeing with you but I also really like glorified commercials for toy robots.

It's mostly that people think eating ramen and watching anime makes them a cross cultural powerhouse; when in reality it doesn't make them any more interesting at all.

There's some fantastic anime and manga, of course. They excel in areas where their Western counterparts fail, and viceversa.

Miyazaki and Akira notwithstanding, I generally equate manga with cheap production values.
I've seen Japanese animation on TV for over thirty years, and the same things that bothered me as a kid are still there today.
Hoove-like feet that, when running, are animated over two measly frames.
Characters laughing with alternating open mouth and clenched teeth.
Big light-dotted eyes that are as close to crying as to maniacal laughing.
Characters switching from relax mode to fighting stance within one frame change.

Besides. I'm a comics buff. Big on European comics, big on American comics. Been lamenting its coming demise for a while now.
    ...
    And my daughter prefers manga.

That's true, Western animation is nowhere near as good at objectification and tentacle porn.

Or at presenting objects in motion, in general.

I'd rather watch a Perfect Blue or Tokyo Godfathers than the n-th Disney movie telling girls to stay home waiting for a prince and being quiet.

I mean, I like Western animation as well but, as always, carefully picking your examples is going to give you a slanted comparison.

You can compare Frozen to Naruto. You could also compare The Penguins of Madagascar to Planétes.

I'll admit that the Disney princesses are also driving me up the wall. But I'm not sure that's not at least in part because of their eyes becoming more manga-like every year.

I dunno, Ralph Bakshi has a knack for it.

SuperWatto I can understand your complaints, but I'd argue it's more down to how Japanese animators cut costs for TV work compared to how Western animators cut costs than any relative merits. Most TV animation is disposable for a reason - like, yeah, I don't want to watch Ditzy High Schoolers with Lazy Side-Mouths #257, but I don't want to watch Johnny Test, either.

Of course, you're right, Ramza. It's just that I'm so extremely old-fashioned that I apparantly still see Japanese animation as the new and cheap thing that's replacing the old and trusted home-made thing. It's just xenophobia, really.

And I know that Astro Boy's eyes were directly lifted from Donald Duck. Still. The devil you know.
