"Far to Go?

    Genre
    : Everything!
    Rating: PG
    Time Frame: Everywhere!
    Characters: Everyone!

Summary: Star Trek drabbles for the UDC4.

Notes: And here we go, I'm drabbling outside of Star Wars ? it feels kinda weird, I'm not going to lie. But it has a 'Star' in the title, so I don't feel that bad. :p These drabbles will mostly take place dealing with the new movie, but I do hope to include other eras as well ? whatever the muse decides. And, that said, lets get started. :)

Week One ? ?View to a Legend?

    001. Flash in the Pan

At first glance he had been every inch the local flirt ? complete with smirking eyes, and the same pick-up lines used from here to Omega III. His face was youthful and handsome ? and covered in scrapes from the last bar brawl, no doubt.

He had winked at her after the fight from the one eye that wasn't swollen shut. Unable to help herself, she had smiled and shaken her head as Captain Pike helped him up.

He had fire in him, to be sure.

But the last thing she wanted to be was dry kindle to an empty flame.

    002. Out on a Limb

The young man before him was hardly what he would have expected from the son of George Kirk. In Pike's mind flashed scores, aptitude test results, the comments from a dozen and one instructors ? and all of those were reflected in the youth before him.

Another may have written him off right away.

But, besides the arrogant turn of phrase and the cocky smile, there was an honest burn to James' eyes - the spark of leadership to anyone looking deep enough. It was the same spark that had lit George's eyes years earlier.

The thought struck, his challenge was issued.

    003. Out of the Blue

Honestly, at first glance, Leonard McCoy had not been paying much attention to James Kirk ? he had been more focused on getting through the trek through Earth's atmosphere without vomiting on the clearly amused kid next to him.

After a few minutes ruminating about the dangers of Arakminian flu and Maja shingles, Kirk's smirking voice interrupted him with a well placed snide comment. Which lead to another. Throughout the flight, he found himself focusing on their verbal spar instead of focusing on the flight.

They landed. Kirk smiled. ?Well done, Bones. Lets see you do it by yourself next time.?

    004. Wet Behind the Ears

At first glance, the cadet had not seemed all too promising to him. The calm arrogance, the smirking smile, and the flippant attitude had all spoken of someone who would not last long under the weight of real battle. The fear the program strove to teach was lost on him. And while that did not anger him, it annoyed something in him that was human and deep.

Hopefully, by the end of the Kobiyashi Maru, Kirk would learn something like respect for command.

Those were his thoughts until the program switched out, and the smirk on Kirk's face only grew.

    005. Heat of the Moment

James T. Kirk's face was one straight from history books - a man whose life and deeds even made it into the Romulan curriculum on Earth's history. He was a man whom Nero may have respected at one point in time. In another lifetime.

And yet, in this life, the good Captain would not even be a footnote in the pages of history.

Perhaps, that underestimation was his downfall. Or perhaps history merely had a way of asserting its dominance.

And yet, as flames tore through the bridge, Nero couldn't help but think that, perhaps, it was much more than that.

Welcome to the world of Star Trek drabbles. This was an awesome first set. I really enjoyed seeing this Kirk through the eyes of others.

there was an honest burn to James' eyes - the spark of leadership to anyone looking deep enough.

well written line and great observation by Pike.

Or perhaps history merely had a way of asserting its dominance.

*nods* I really enjoyed this fateful pov from Nero.

    Last but not least...

They landed. Kirk smiled. ?Well done, Bones. Lets see you do it by yourself next time.?

Ah, the beginning of a beautiful friendship. :p

Well done, Mira. Please PM me with future updates!

    I'm having a ridiculous amount of fun with these . . . ;)

Week Two - ?Progression of a Friendship"

    006. Impossible

As first impressions went, when Kirk met Spock very few good ones were made. Arrogant and cold were his first thoughts, followed by less flattering and less true adjectives that were more his anger speaking than anything else.

While the commander's logic was sound, Kirk's reasoning was stubborn, and he itched and burned where the other would not see it.

Almost thankful for the distress signal, Kirk turned to Bones, almost simmering. ?Just who was that pointy eared Hobgoblin, anyway?? he bit out.

McCoy smirked, and shrugged, his eyes laughing at his friend. ?I don't know. But I like him.?

    007. Unlikely

It was odd, watching someone fall apart with only their eyes.

For a split second Kirk felt something like pity for Spock - watching the other man reach brokenly over the empty transporter mat, his face conveying only confusion as his mind tried to compute what had just happened. Kirk half expected him to break ? to shudder, to stumble, to show something past the calm denial that he held now.

But he didn't, and the sympathy faded quickly - only to be completely vanished somewhere between the nerve pinch and crashing on Delta Vega.

The cursing kinda got in the way then.

    008. Reasonable

True, he knew few could blame him for his doubt upon hearing the elderly Vulcan's tale, but he doubted that anyone could hold onto not believing after feeling that. There had been pain, so much pain ? the pain of worlds lost, the pain of regret . . . the pain of seeing an old friend, alive again.

    Alive again.

The thought ricocheted through his mind alongside the pride and the respect that this version of Spock held for him . . . leaving a very small part of his mind cowering at the thought of living up to all that he now knew he could be.

    009. Probable

?It's logical, Spock, I thought that you would like that.?

? . . . No. Not this time,? the Vulcan's voice held as close of a trace of satisfaction that he would ever have, his eyes burning with something like righteous anger.

In the end, Nero decided his own fate, but Kirk couldn't help but feel pleased nonetheless when he saw the flash of almost-respect in the other man's eyes. In his own mind, traces of another lifetime flashed ? a parting memory from an elder counterpart, and this felt like something resembling that memory.

Perhaps, they were one step closer to that, now.

    010. Definite

A few hours after Nero's defeat, Kirk drew Spock aside to set a few things straight. Beginning with: ?I'm sorry for the things I said back there. They were . . . needed, but painful nonetheless.?

Spock didn't react besides a (higher)raised brow. ?Your apology is unnecessary, as your motives were both warranted and justified.?

    A moment passed, awkwardly silent.

And then - ?I, on the other hand, feel compelled to express my regret at attempting to strangle you.?

Kirk nearly chocked on a burst of surprised laughter, and much to the Vulcan's displeasure, he clapped him once on the shoulder. ?Don't mention it.?

    Sweet! Week 2!

Unlikely is my favorite this week, Mira. I had goosebumps on the arms over Kirk's acknowledgement of the sorrow of Spock's lost mother (very well written, btw) followed, in the same drabble with his incredulity over Spock's subsequent ejection of him from the ship. Brilliantly played. the transition was seamless. I was at the end of the drabble before I realized what had happened. :D

McCoy smirked, and shrugged, his eyes laughing at his friend. ?I don't know. But I like him.?

I loved that line in the film.

Reasonable was heady stuff. That mind meld with Spock Prime must have given Young Jim some perspective. [face_thinking]

Kirk nearly chocked on a burst of surprised laughter, and much to the Vulcan's displeasure, he clapped him once on the shoulder. ?Don't mention it.?

This line was very Kirk. So few words, but I can hear Pine and see the gregarious poster of Kirk here.

    Great set, Mira.

Jade_eyes: As much as Luke?? Wow. But, when you think about it . . . [face_love] Yeah. He's up there. [face_love]

RX_Sith: Thank-you so much for the kind words! [face_blush] :D

Brodiew: Wow! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a well thought out review. :D I'm just kinda grinning stupidly right now. [:D]

Week Three - ?What Works For Me . . .?

    011. Truth

Spock looked over at Kirk, the barest trace of bewilderment lighting his eyes. ?Was it . . . something that I said??

Jim refrained from slapping his forehead, but just barely. ?Yeah, just a bit.?

He watched his friend's look of puzzlement deepen.

Kirk gave a long suffering sigh. ?Sometimes the blunt truth just doesn't cut it. You need to . . . bend things around, just a little.?

?Pardon my confusion, Captain, but you are implying that lying is necessary for the smooth progression of a relationship??

?Well . . . it's not exactly so much lying as it is telling her what she already wants to hear.?

    012. Trust

?I recommend chocolate ? and flowers. Let her cool off, and everything will be right as rain.?

?You are saying that sweets and dead plants are necessary to remove oneself from the . . . dog house, as you put it??

Jim tried his best to keep a straight face. He really, really did. ?It's what every guy has to do at one point or another, believe me.?

Spock frowned, a look of barely retrained confusion on his face. ?It really is illogical that I be the one to apologize, seeing as how she clearly-?

?It doesn't matter one bit. Trust me on that one.?

    013. Honor

Outside, the lights from the sickbay were muted from the late hour. The dim rays bounced off the sterile walls, reflecting in the small tumbler of brandy before him. He was holding a moving picture of a laughing girl in sunshine yellow, his eyes bleary with missed moments.

?Joanna's nine today, right?? a voice from the door asked.

    ?Ten,? McCoy corrected automatically.

Kirk nodded before quietly taking a seat, and pouring the next round of drinks. ?You know, I bet she'd love to hear from you,? he said softly.

McCoy didn't comment, just took the shot, and gestured for another.

    014. Loyalty

?- Jim! Leave the kid alone.?

?I can't! There are codes that have been broken! Unspoken rules that have not been obeyed! -?

?Jim.? McCoy's voice was a warning.

?Hey, I have a duty here as the kid's Captain and older male influence!?

    Chekov looked a bit scared.

Bones rolled his eyes and turned to the bartender. ?I need a drink,? he muttered.

Kirk ignored him, and looped an arm over Chekov's shoulders. ?Now, the art of wooing a female is a time honored tradition; lovingly honed, and practiced with pride. Under my instruction, you will . . .?

McCoy snorted, and drained his glass.

    015. Love

Two drinks later, McCoy watched with Kirk as Chekov approached a leggy blonde with lots of skin and little in terms of clothing.

?You're a bad influence, you know,? McCoy growled.

Kirk shrugged, looking proudly at his pupil.

    A moment passed.

?Ten he botches it,? Bones finally gave.

    Kirk only smiled. ?You're on.?

Chekov and the lady exchanged a few words, and thinks looked promising until they could hear his thickly accented voice exclaim, ?I think I love you!?

McCoy smirked. Kirk smacked his head. Poor Chekov went down in flames in record time.

Smugly, McCoy held his hand out.

I'm taking my first stab at the whole Spock/Uhura thing here. [face_dancing] While initially baffling, they now have to be one of my favorite aspects of the movie, so it was fun to drabble about some of the times before the movie . . . . [face_love]

Week Four - ?Something Not Unlike Falling?

For Jade_eyes, who fuels the shipper in me. Thanks, gal!!

    016. Gaze

He could feel her gaze between his shoulder blades.

She was sitting in the front row of his class, just off to the left where she would be the first in his sight should he need to call on someone. Her eyes managed to flicker anywhere but on him as he turned around to try to catch her stare again.

    She was . . . most fascinating.

After class, when she came up to him and asked him for help later that evening, he accepted with a nod and a level tone ? neither an indication of the emotions that bubbled most curiously underneath.

    017. Wink

She got ready for the evening with more care than she normally put into her appearance, earning the attention of her roommate in the form of a smug smile and coy wink. ?So, who's the lucky guy who managed to worm his way into a date with you??

Nyota managed a halfhearted glare. ?I'm not going on a date . . . I'm meeting the Commander for some help with those long-distance anomalies I've been struggling with.?

    Silence.

    ?So . . . you're getting dressed up for a Vulcan . . . to study?? Gaila's voice was dubious before turning absurdly hopeful. ? . . . Just studying??

    ?Just studying,? Nyota blushed.

    018. Distance

Over the course of the evening, the distance between them seemed to shrink. In his mind he thinks 45.7 centimeters ? the unconscious and courteous space usually maintained between colleagues . . . The distance is even more marked between student and teacher, he knows.

He finds propriety blurring in a most baffling way as they huddled together over the same PADD, remarking over this and that as they searched for a solution to the puzzle. There was scarce a whisper between their bodies, and her hand brushed his every time she pointed something out, until he wondered if her gesticulations were on purpose . . .

    019. Cold as ice

It was well past dark by the time he escorted her back to her dorm. The usually star spangled sky was shaded in silver gray as a light mist of rain fell over them. She lingered as the rain caressed her, enjoying the confusion on his face as she relished something that would 'only serve to make her uncomfortable later.'

She moved her hand down his arm to tangle with his, smiling when his fingers flexed in uncertainty before closing over hers. Instead of cold, as she would have thought, his skin was warm, contrasting perfectly with the icy rain.

    020. Eternal Flame

Well . . . they had officially broken no fewer than 7.5 different rules and regulations in the last 5.35 seconds - not to mention being completely illogical as to kissing in the rain in the first place ? and none of that seemed to matter when she pulled away, and turned her smile on him. He found himself mesmerized by the way the droplets of spring watter clung to her long lashes and trickled down her full lips . . . and a second later he was kissing her again.

Something inside of him, human and suppressed and deep, defined the emotion swimming through him as happiness.

?It really is illogical that I be the one to apologize, seeing as how she clearly-?

Ah?men. We always need to be right. Even when we are, there are times to keep quiet and take one for the team. With a Vulcan man, Spock especially, I see this being a tough lesson to learn.

Honor was sad, but I?m a big fan of the friendship between Kirk and McCoy. Well done.

Loyalty and Love were cute. Kirk has a responsibility. Right? Chekov may be a harder student than Luke was for Yoda, however.

I adored this sequence. Very well written. Captivating.

Well . . . they had officially broken no fewer than 7.5 different rules and regulations in the last 5.35 seconds - not to mention being completely illogical as to kissing in the rain in the first place.

I really enjoyed both Cold as Ice and Eternal Flame. Your setting was so well written. I was really caught up in the atmosphere. I also enjoyed the alternating pov and Spock?s understanding of his feelings. Spock?s narration in EF had playful rebellion written all over it.

The 'playful rebellion' was one of my favorite aspects of his character that the movie portrayed, and I tried to capture that here. :D
