The Galileo Exploration

Act Four

"It may be the last action you'll ever take, Mister Spock, but it was all human," Doctor McCoy remarks as the ignited fuel trail starts to taper off.

"Totally illogical. There was no chance," Spock simply replies staring in disbelief into the darkness of space.

"That's exactly what I mean," McCoy states to get the last word in before their ultimate doom.

The shuttlecraft started to taper down towards the atmosphere of Taurus II; its fuel expended, the surviving crew had no chance of survival once the shuttlecraft started re-entry; it was going to be burnt up along with her crew.

The Enterprise's scanners was pointed back towards the planet in the hope that maybe they would get lucky and spot anything from the planet. Lt. Uhuru's heart pounded as each second that they moved away from the planet meant that she would not see her beloved again. She didn't want to break down and cry, but soon she would if they didn't detect any glimpse of their comrades.

Suddenly, on the viewscreen, a straight green pair of lines were seen going in a straight line across the planet.

"Sir," Lt. Sulu interjects, "Look!"

"Could it be an anomaly?" Kirk asks his navigator.

"No sir," Sulu remarks, "It's traveling perpendicular to the planet.

"Quick," Kirk orders, "One-eighty turn."

The ship quickly banks back towards the planet. Lt. Uhuru's heart skips in her chest as hope was now restored for Spock and the rest of the crew. She beams giddily as the ship got closer to the planet. They were almost in transporter range. She jumps out of her seat and raced towards the turbolift.

"Transporter Room Seven," she barks the orders to the turbolift as it starts to move.

"Quick, beam them aboard," Kirk orders as the ship enters transporter range.

Smoke starts to fill the shuttlecraft as it starts its re-entry into Taurus II's atmosphere. Spock and the others start to cough as the heat intensifies inside of the shuttlecraft. Suddenly, a beam captures the survivors just before the shuttlecraft burns up in its fiery re-entry.

"Transporter Room Seven, do you have them?" Kirk asks hoping that they have saved their comrades in time.

"Yes, sir," the Transporter Room operation responds, "We have them, Sir! We have them!"

Suddenly, Lt. Uhuru bursts into the room and smothers a particular Vulcan in sweet delicious kisses.

"Don't ever do that again," she teases him.

"Don't worry, he won't," Doctor McCoy interjects teasingly.

She sticks out her tongue at the rude doctor and promptly escorts her beloved away.

"What, no welcoming party for the rest of us," McCoy moans as Kirk finally enters the room.

"Glad to see that you still have your wit, Doctor," he winks at him teasingly.

"That reminds me," McCoy retorts, "You have a physical in my office tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock sharp."

Kirk merely grins at his friend and slaps him on the back.

The next morning, everyone on the Bridge is looking oddly at Mr. Spock as Doctor McCoy and Captain Kirk talk about the circumstances of the mission.

"Tell me, Mr. Spock," Captain Kirk breaks the ice, "When you jettisoned the fuel, don't you think that was an act of desperation; a human emotion?"

"No, Captain," Spock explains, "I compared all of the options available and made the logical choice which you may consider an act of desperation, but to me it was merely the only logical choice remaining."

"Ah, I see," Kirk muses, "So, you completely deny that you had what we humans would call a leap of faith?"

"No, Sir," Spock replies sincerely as he folds his arms.

"Mr. Spock," Kirk remarks, "You are a stubborn man."

"Yes, Sir," Spock responds stoically.

The crew bursts into laughter after Spock admits to being stubborn; a definite human emotion.

How last second is that for a rescue

The aftermath -- the teasing and Spock always plays off the others' joking so well -- with a "If you say so" kind of air" -- I'll have you know that this revamping of the Galileo has been superb -- the S/U factor just puts it way, way over the top!



Can you imagine if they'd done this originally? Had them together originally. Melts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Extra Scene and Debriefing

Captain's Log Supplemental: As we arrive at Makus III with the medical supplies, Galactic High Commissioner Ferris, whom I have every reason to loathe, stands on the transporter pad awaiting transport.

"Captain, I along with the citizens of Makus III thank you," Ferris starts with the pleasantries, "Be mindful though Captain, that I will send in my report your complete disregard to superiors and general lack of formality to me as your guest."

"Is that all?" Kirk inquires with a raised eyebrow as Spock looks on.

"One to beam down," Ferris orders him completely disregarding again his lack of formality towards him.

"With pleasure," Kirk beams a wide grin as Scotty engages the transporter beam and the Galactic High Commissioner is transported down to the planet.

"Well, Spock, I take it that you didn't exactly like my tact with the Commissioner," Kirk implies to his Science Officer.

"I believe that is was the Commissioner who did not agree with your tact, Captain, not I," Spock retorts.

"So, you're okay with what I did then?" Kirk questions him.

"If it were not for what you call your stubbornness," Spock starts, "then I would not be here engaging you in this rapport conversation."

"Did you just say thank you?" Kirk asks inquisitively.

"You'll never get that out of him, Jim," McCoy butts in.

Spock merely raises his eyebrow and grabs Nyota's arm and intertwines it with his. "I believe that I'll get some relaxation now, Captain," he coos out as he walks out the door with Uhuru in tow.

The next day at the debriefing the officers gathered. Lt. Boma was seated along with the usual officers around the table.

"Lt. Boma," Captain Kirk starts, "I am authorized by Starfleet to hereby lower you in rank for insubordination towards a superior officer. Do you have anything to say?"

"Yes, Captain," Boma replies, "I am sorry for my actions on Taurus II. I hope that I can one day make up for my acts towards Mr. Spock."

"If not for Mr. Spock's cool and logical approach to the situation, you'd probably be dead, Lieutenant," Kirk tells him point blank.

"I know, sir," Boma remorsefully states, "I wish that I could have kept my emotions in check. Unfortunately, I over-reacted to the crisis at hand."

"You will be assigned to the Mars Colony Base, Lieutenant," Kirk informs him of his orders.

"Thank you, sir," Boma replies as he walks out of the debriefing room sullenly.

"Captain, was that necessary?" Spock inquires.

"It was, Mr. Spock," Kirk tells him, "Mr. Scott is the one who sent a report in towards Lt. Boma's insubordination."

"I knew that you would never do such a thing," Scotty explains to Spock, "It was the right thing to do."

"I guess that I will never understand the human thing to do," Spock remarks as he stoically raises his hands together in a Vulcan meditation stance.

"Oh, I believe that you already do," McCoy reluctantly tells him, "And for once I'm glad that you do."

Spock gets up from the debriefing table and exits the room to an awaiting Nyota. Once again they interlock their arms and walk towards his quarters.

"Yes, he definitely has that human thing to do down pat," Kirk muses as he smiles at McCoy who laughs.

[b]Tomorrow's Yesterday is Gone[/b]

[b]Prologue[/b]

The radar beeps as a blip suddenly appears out of nowhere.

"Sir, we've detected something," Airman Webb informs his Commanding Officer.

"Scramble our attack jets immediately!" the Commanding Officer yells, "Let's get a move on!"

A single attack jet flies into the sky from the military base. Moments later a second attack jet follows as they engage their boost engines and rocket past Mach 1 into the stratosphere above the military base in Omaha, Nebraska.

In the clouds above, a strange looking craft lumbers in the stratosphere with its primary saucer section and two distinct nacelles trailing from a primary hull.

"Captain's Log, Stardate 3113.2, subjective time: We were en route to Starbase 9 for resupply when a black star of high gravitational attraction began to drag us toward it. It required all warp power in reverse to pull us away from the star but like snapping a rubber band, the breakaway sent us plunging through space, out of control to stop here, wherever we are."

"What happened?" Kirk asks his navigator.

"It seems as if we have entered the atmosphere of a planet," Sulu reports, "Controls are sluggish though."

"Scotty, what's the status of the engines?" Kirk hits the intercom to Engineering.

"Captain, we're on auxiliary power only," Scotty informs Kirk, "We only have impulse power and it's not at the fullest power band."

"Uhuru, contact Starfleet and let them know our situation," Kirk orders his Communications Officer.

After a few moments Uhuru interrupts the Captain. "Sir," she reports, "I cannot raise Starfleet on normal channels. All that I get is static. But I am getting something from the surface."

"On speaker," Kirk orders.

"This is CBS reporting that the first flight to the moon is scheduled to go off this Wednesday," the radio broadcast states, "It will mark one of the most important dates in history."

"Speaker off," Kirk orders, "Spock?" he questions his Science Officer, "Didn't the first moon mission occur in the late 1960's?"

"Yes, that is correct, Captain," Spock explains, "We must have been thrown back in time by the black star's whiplash."

"If we've been thrown back in time, then how do we get back?" Kirk questions Spock.

"Unknown at this time, Captain," Spock summarizes their situation, "Given that we only are on auxiliary power and that impulse power is not at 100 percent, our current chances are none."

"Well, isn't that all nostalgic," Doctor McCoy muses, "We've gone back to the past and we have no way to get back to the present. You could say that yesterday is gone."

"I believe I just did, Doctor," Spock states with an arching eyebrow.

"Captain, I am picking up more communication from below," Lt. Uhuru interrupts the banter between Doctor McCoy and Spock.

"On speaker," Kirk orders again.

"This is Bluejay 4," the transmission states, "I am in pursuit of something."

"You should be able to see it," another voice states, "Do you have visual?"

"The object is climbing fast," Bluejay 4 reports, "Whatever it is, it's escaping in a hurry."

"Sulu, get us out of here," Kirk orders.

"She's climbing, Sir," Sulu reports, "She's still very sluggish though."

"This is Bluejay 4," the transmission continues, "The object has a cylindrical hull and two cylindrical projections protruding from a primary cylindrical base."

"Blackjack 4 should be able to be there in two minutes to assist you," another voice states.

"The object won't be here in two minutes," Bluejay 4 reports.

"You have permission to shoot down the object," the command base states.

"Roger," Bluejay 4 replies, "I'm arming my missiles and preparing to boost again to catch it."

"Captain, that aircraft could have nuclear missiles," Spock muses, "If it fires, we are a sitting duck."

What an exciting "but I can't tell anyone or they'll lock me up" experience for the pilot.

Looking forward to his reactions and to solving the stuck in the past situation.

[b]Tomorrow's Yesterday is Gone[/b]

[b]Act I - A Dubious Detainee[/b]

"You speak English," the surprised pilot spoke to his counterpart.

"Yes," Kirk started, "I am Captain James T. Kirk of the Federation Starship [i]Enterprise[/i]".

"I am Captain Sean-Michel Picard of the United States Air Force," the pilot introduced himself.

"Well, Sean-Michel, it seems as though you are now a part of our crew in the meantime," Kirk starts to explain.

"A part of your crew! I don't think so!" Sean-Michel shouts, "I want to return to Earth now!"

"All will be explained in due time, Captain," Kirk tells him, "Your craft was destroyed. Come with me as I show you around the ship."

Sean-Michel reluctantly follows Kirk through the hallways of the vessel. He sees females walking about amongst the crew. He then is taken aback as he enters the Bridge and encounters Mr. Spock.

"Little green man," he jokes.

"I assure you that I am not," Spock retorts while raising an eyebrow, "Captain," he pulls Kirk aside, "The main systems have been restored including the main deflector. We can no longer be detected by any military installations. Unfortunately, we cannot return Captain Picard to Earth either."

"Why not?" Picard butts into the conversation.

"You already know too much," Spock explains, "He could alter the course of human history, Captain."

"I see," Kirk muses, "Give him clothing from our stores and then bring him to my ready room."

In his ready room, Kirk starts to make his log recording.

"Captains log, Stardate 3113.7, subjective time: Our engines are being repaired, but we are still locked in time, and we have aboard a passenger whom we do not want, and we cannot return."

As Spock and Picard enter the room, Kirk offers them a drink. Picard partakes of the synthenhol but Spock does not.

"Well, Mr. Picard," Kirk starts, "What do you think about the ship?"

"Your ship is of a design I have never seen before, Captain," Picard states, "It would be interesting to report my findings."

"Which is precisely the reason that we can't seen you back," Kirk tells him, "You have a duty to report what you find, do you not?"

"Yes, Captain, I do," Picard replies remorsefully, "I'm sorry, but I do have a duty to my country."

"I understand," Kirk agrees, "I would do the same if I was also in your position. Spock, is there any reason for Captain Picard's return?"

"There is none, Captain," Spock reports, "Earth history has no relevant contributions by Captain Picard."

"But, what about my wife and my children?" Picard questions Spock, "They will miss me and I need to go back!"

Spock raises his eyebrow while Kirk further explains their position.

"I'm sorry, Captain Picard," Kirk explains, "But the risks are too great. Any knowledge that you expose of our existence could jeopardize future events."

"Captain," Scotty interrupts their conversation over the intercom.

"Yes, Scotty," Kirk responds.

"Our engines will be ready in four hours," Scotty explains, "But we have no where to go or refuel."

"I see, Mr. Scott," Kirk replies, "Thank you for your report."

"Well, I may not be able to go home," Picard muses, "But, it also looks like you are just as stuck as me, Captain."

I actually don't remember what happened to the pilot in TOS, so I'm curious to see where you take this.

And do you think this Picard is an ancestor of Jean-Luc's, because that would be fate.

[b]Act Two - A Difficult Dilemma[/b]

[i]"Captains log, Stardate 3113.7, subjective time: Our engines are being repaired, but we are still locked in time, and we have aboard a passenger whom we do not want, and we cannot return."[/i]

Kirk is disgusted that Picard's words ring so true to their current situation. As Spock re-enters his quarters, he awaits any more unfortunate news about their dilemma.

"Any further news?" he quieries his first officer.

"I do have further news on the implicacies of Captain Picard."

"Oh..." muses Kirk as he hits the intercom, "Captain Picard to the Captain's Ready Room."

No reply is made. A few seconds pass and then another officer reports.

"Captain Picard is not in his quarters, Captain," the officer reports.

"He must be trying to escape," Kirk theorizes, "All hands, be on the look out for Captain Picard, he may be trying to leave."

Kirk and Spock hurry to the transporter room where Captain Picard is holding a phaser on Transporter Chief Kyle. Kirk immediately disarms Picard and knocks him out with one punch. Kirk and Spock take Picard to Sickbay where Dr. McCoy tells them that Picard's wounds are superficial.

"If I was in his shoes, I'd be doing the exact same thing," Kirk sympathizes with Picard, "I'd be trying to go home."

"Well, Captain," McCoy remarks, "We are just as stuck as he is. And we can't all beam down to Earth. The timeline would forever be disturbed."

"Well, were are not to that point yet," Kirk remarks, "Can he be made to forget?"

Picard wakes up hearing those words.

"Sorry, Captain," Picard sincerely replies, "But I would never forget my family."

"That is what I wanted to tell you about, Captain," Spock interrupts, "It seems that Captain Picard's offspring does have a unique history within Starfleet. His son, Major General Georges Picard, was an officer within the United Earth Space Probe Agency in 2161. He was an aide to Ambassador Thomas Vanderbilt at the founding of the Federation after the Romulan War."

"Well, I guess that means that he has to go back," Kirk replies.

Picard beams a huge smile, "A son," he states proudly, "I've always wanted a son."

"We have to assume that the plane wreckage will be searched," Spock reports, "And, Captain Picard also has stated that he took some pictures of our ship."

"But, weren't these sightings explained away as anything but UFO's?" Kirk questions his first officer.

"Normally, yes, Captain, but, with his plane being literally ripped apart, there is no question that we are adversarial," Spock explains, "And that a UFO did indeed destroy a military plane."

"How about us getting back to our own time then," Kirk inquires.

"I have a theory," Spock summarizes, "We can use the Sun's gravitational pull to go back in time and then use it as a slingshot to go forward back to our time."

"Alright, Sulu and I will go down to the base and destroy any visual evidence of us while you program the computers to do this slingshot effect," Kirk orders.

Kirk and Sulu beam down to the base where they find the room where the visual tapes are kept. They force their way into the room. After putting all of the tapes into Sulu's bag, Kirk and Sulu make one last look around to make sure that they have everything.

A security officer enters and orders Kirk and Sulu to hand over everything that they have. They give the security officer a bag and a communicator which the security officer accidently activates the emergency signal. The security officer is immediately beamed aboard.

Spock looks at their latest passenger who remains frozen upon seeing the strange alien in front of him. Spock removes the bag from the security officer and contacts Kirk.

"It seems as if we have another problem, Captain," Spock reports.

 

"It seems as if we have another problem, Captain," Spock reports.

"Yes, we do," Kirk remarks, "It brings about another dilemma."

Oops! What will they do with this one?

[b]Act Three - A Troubling Dilemma that is Gorner be Remembered for being so Pickled[/b]

"Captain's log, Stardate 3113.9, subjective time: First Officer Spock recording. Due to an unfortunate accident, we have taken aboard another unwanted passenger."

Kirk contacts the [i]Enterprise[/i], "Just keep our latest arrival in the transporter room," he starts, "The less he sees the better."

"He is most definitely not going anywhere," Spock reports as the security officer remains frozen on the transporter pad, "He seems to be content on just standing there."

"Good," Kirk remarks, "We have just one more room to check out, then we'll be beaming aboard."

Kirk and Sulu enter the Dark Room which sets off a silent alarm to other security personnel monitoring the inside of the base. As Kirk hands the last tape to Sulu, he exits the door to the dark room and sees more security personnel standing in front of him. He just pauses as they apprehend him.

"Where's the other one?" Lieutenant Colonel Ferengi asks Kirk.

"What other one?" Kirk replies blankly.

"I saw you look back into the dark room," Ferengi states, "You must be with someone else."

"Sorry to disappoint," Kirk remarks sincerely, "But, I am the only one here."

They take Kirk to an interrogation room where Ferengi picks up Kirk's phaser, "And what is this," he asks, "A radio transmitter?"

Kirk doesn't answer his question.

"And what kind of uniform are you wearing?" Ferengi questions him some more, "I tell you Kirk that you are going to have enough charges to lock you up for the next 200 years."

"Well, that would be about right," Kirk replies wittingly.

...

Back in orbit above Earth, Spock and Picard are planning Kirk's rescue. Picard insists on beaming down to help with the rescue mission.

"Well, seeing that you know the base layout the most, I have to agree with you coming along," Spock remarks, "Mr. Sulu, issue yourself and I a phaser, but not to Captain Picard."

"You don't trust me, do you Spock?" Picard questions him.

"It's not that I don't trust you," Spock replies, "It's that you're our best chance in rescuing the Captain."

They beam down to the base and Mr. Spock takes out two of the security personnel holding Kirk captive. Captain Picard picks up one of the incapacitated security officer's gun and points it at Kirk and Sulu.

"Sorry it had to be this way," he states, "Mr. Spock, come out from behind the door."

Spock does not show himself. He instead comes from behind Captain Picard and administers the Vulcan nerve pinch to his neck incapacitating him.

"I suspected that he would not want to go back," Spock reports.

They all beam back onboard the [i]Enterprise[/i] and Kirk enters his next log.

"Captain's log, Stardate 3114.1, subjective time: We must make an attempt to break free of this time or we and our reluctant passengers will remain its prisoners. All we have is a theory and a few facts."

"Our only possible way back is to use a slingshot effect like the one they used to arrive in the first place," Spocks explains his theory, "Theoretically, the whiplash from the sun's gravity would send them into another time warp."

"What about me and our other guest?" Picard questions Spock.

"For a moment, you and our other guest will go into the relative past," Spocks explains his theory some more, "And then we will transport both the captain and the guard to points before they were beamed up. The events, though still in their minds, will not have occurred, so there would be nothing for them to report."

Scotty now brings up one problem. "The Enterprise may not have enough braking control to stop in their own time," he reports, "They may overshoot their
