Nick Roberts flat on his back in a bed in the medbay of the Enterprise heard the song he had come to love when he had been comforting Teri Bel Hana. The song had been piping through the comsystem in the hospital just when McCoy was getting the rape-kit to examine Teri. He had held her for a long time. The song had ended before she began to speak of the atrocities inflicted on her family.

I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark

Nick remembered what she had told him about watching the murder of her sons Jake and Tom and the deaths of her husband John and his brother Don at the hands of Mazzanic’s henchmen. Her daughter Jessy was to be the play-toy before she too would be murdered when she offered herself. She had endured and was led away by the last moron to her bound daughter. The man had given her a tattered bright blue surgical dress and wanted her and her daughter for a hunting-game. He had put them in a wreck with a timed lock.

Nick had seen the flashes of the gun. He had adjusted the scope on his blastech 300 sniper phaser until he was sure and had squeezed the trigger when the door in the wreck was opening. He had seen no more activity but the dash for the safety of the rocks of Teri and Jessy.

Nick knew he would need her. Today was the day when McCoy would wean him of the ventilator. He had seen him getting towards the scrub-room – a place of fun and mayhem during his active days on the Enterprise – to dress.

Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

Nick saw her coming followed by McCoy.

“I knew you would like it,” Teri gave a kiss on his cheek.

“And very soon you will be able to kiss him there,” McCoy smiled and began to adjust the machine. “Breathe Nick. You can.” He placed his hand on the tube.

Nick breathed. ‘I can!’ Another breath in and out.

“There it is,” McCoy had the tube in his hand.

“Terr,” Nick tried.

“You will regain your voice my beloved,” Teri placed a quick kiss on his mouth.

Nick felt the softness of her lips and said “Teri I love you.”

And he knew that he would overcome any darkness that was waiting for him. He had a long way to recover but with Teri and her daughter at his side he knew he would be alright.
