I have finally decided to sit down and watch through Trek (movies and shows), but I am reluctant to include the Animated series. I realize its largely a joke at this point but am I missing anything by skipping it??

 

Not much really. A few insights to things mentioned in other series is about the best thing you'll get from it. About the only thing that I remember of significance was the one about Spock's childhood and his pet that was mentioned in TOS and Enterprise. That and more Tribbles.

 

I hear that the quality of the animation varies alot, from not very good to near feature level, but that some of the stories are outstanding.

 

The only thing I remember from the animated series is when the computer decided to play jokes on people.

Oh, and the three-armed alien.

 

No one gives a crap about the animated series. It's not even considered canon. No, you're not missing anything.
