Just saw the trailer - I think it looks great. If their looking to push Trek just a little more into mainstream I think they are doing very well. My fiance is not a trekker by any means and she's excited for it, too. I think I'm also of the opinion that as long as Abrams stays true to the spirit of the show and the things that made Star Trek a great franchise, then I really don't give a tribble's behind if they follow established continuity. I mean, sure you can add to it and add to it, but eventually any story starts breaking down and developing continuity errors if it grows large enough and maybe a Berman-free, worry-free fresh start is what the franchise needed.

I also think that non-fans can feel alienated at times by the vast amount of print, celluloid, tape and digital memory that Star Trek occupies and the extremely long continuity that accompanies it. I still haven't seen every episode of any series. I enjoy Trek very, very much, but I simply don't want to invest in the entire collection because it's too large and keeps upgrading to the next format before I can get close to owning a quarter of the whole shebang. I much prefer to catch it in syndication re-runs, watch a few downloaded or vhs/dvd favorites or just enjoy the films. I think it's great that they're not worrying about pleasing every trek fan and are just trying to make a good movie. :)

    Which ship?

There are at least four in the trailer.

    The Enterprise

    The Kelvin

    Nero's ship

Spock Prime's Timeship (or so everyone thinks)

    and bunches of shuttles

Spock Prime's Timeship? o_O Ok, even assuming that he lived a ways beyond TNG... the Federation was quite a ways from that level of technology, from what I recall. Where the heck would he get a Timeship? Am I forgetting something? (Not counting all the weird time travel stuff from Enterprise)

I don't know how much of it will be explained in the movie itself, but IDW is doing a series of prequel comics starting in January.
