    Title: Open Window

Summary: Will Riker's thoughts about his family, in the future.

Notes: Short story. Based on Star Trek: TNG.

    Author: Sara_Kenobi

It's been twenty-five years since they were married, but he loved her more now than he ever did. They were waiting for their daughter Kestra to come home to their house in Ontario from Starfleet Academy. She was due back any moment now. What Will was dreading about the visit, was that Kestra was bringing home her new boyfriend. The one she couldn't stop talking about.

The one she had dated longer than any one else.

In the back of his mind he knew this guy wasn't going to go anywhere. He had a sense of permanence about him that the others did not. Will knew he should be happy for his daughter. But this was different. This was about their little girl.

Will wanted Kestra to be happy, but he wanted to make sure that this was the right path for her. If they got engaged now, it might get between Kestra and her career in Starfleet. Will wanted more for her than a quick engagement and wedding.

Their son, Kyle, was still at the academy. He had a few different girlfriends, over the last few years, but he didn't let anything hurt his career. His career came first.

Wonderful daddy!style musings. He wants to balance his daughter's happiness, to what her goal/purpose should be/is. [face_thinking] Plus he wants this guy she's dating to be the "real deal". And last but not least, "our baby girl's all grown up." ;)

    =D=

    I appreciate the replies! Here's a little more! :)

    ***

Deanna would say he was reading too much into things and they should let their children make their own decisions. Both Kestra and Kyle were smart. Was he thinking too much about this? Not everyone wanted to put their careers above making a family life. That was what Deanna and himself had done, and they never had children until well into their forties. Marrying later in life, and then finally having their family...it had been worth the wait.

But should he really expect their children to follow the same path? Guilt hit Will just then. No, he shouldn't. Was the answer that came to mind.

He would hear what Kestra and Jayson had to say, and he wouldn't be so quick to judge their relationship. He would give them a chance.

It was the best thing to do. Right?

They were getting married on their next break from the academy. Will sometimes hated being right. But he knew his daughter well.

She was the picture of pure happiness though, which managed to warm his negative feelings about this. If Jayson could make his daughter that happy, then he would be happy for them. “You're doing the right thing Will!” Deanna whispered to him.

Jayson and Kestra had an Earth wedding. A couple hundred people showed up to support the bride and groom. They'd be moving into a house just up the road from Deanna and himself. It made Will smile knowing they would be living so close by.

“Congratulations sweetheart!” Will told his daughter. “Thanks daddy!”

“They're on break again, soon, Imzadi,” Deanna said softly.

    “I know,” Will smiled.

This marriage was reason to celebrate. And celebrate it, they would.

    The End

Delightful and wonderful conclusion. =D= You know that his daughter's happiness would tip the balance between is this the best thing for her or not? @};- Fantab that she and Jayson will be near he & Deanna. Grandkids when they arrive, conveniently nearby also. ;)
