Exactly. And I'll say again, as ThreeDeathstickProblem says - imo there IS an actual shift back towards more in camera work from where ROTS is.

The troopers alone would be evidence of this.

No one is saying there is no CG - no one. Not on here. Not TPTB. But there there does appear to be a "better" (I admit this is subjective) balance of in-camera and digital VFX than there were by the end of the PT.

If TPTB are emphasising the practical side of things more than the digital (and I suspect this might change a little as we see Maz and Snoke) it's no different from what George did when emphasising the digital aspect of things - he absolutely pushed that side of things when talking about ROTS at least. If you're going to haul TPTB over the coals, I expect you'll call out George for his "lying", "hypocrisy" and "dishonesty" right, guys?

The films looks great. Isn't that all that matters?

I dissagree. Lucas made Star Wars for people of all ages, and succeeded. That is why people like me, who were 7 years old when Star Wars was first released in 1977, still obsess about it today. :D

    Qui-Riv-Brid,

I always appreciate those BTS photo essays you post, it's cool to see those rarer images. Having said that, my point isn't that Lucas wasn't trying to do his best and use the best technology on hand: it's that things like CGI Threepio in AOTC didn't turn out to be best, in the subjective view of most viewers (including me). If that weren't the common view, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I respectfully disagree that the CGI clones were the best tech at the time. My second theater viewing of ROTS confirmed this for me, as Obi-Wan "interacted" with obviously non-existent clones during the Utapau briefing. I think Lucas would have been better served by having Temuera Morrison perform each clone himself, and then use tracking and CG artists to replicate/composite them together. That's using a combo of old and new, and more in line with what Abrams is doing now.

Oh, and here's an example of a 2005 film that did do this, to more convincing effect (IMO) than purely CG characters:

Yep. Doing clones with CG animation is the best way to go. For sure.

Probably the reason we haven't seen Snoke or Maz yet is that TPTB want to wait until the CG is looking it's best.

Lol just shows how much Sci Fi is hated, she really deserves more awards for that. Her Playing a Clone Playing a different Clone is frakking amazing just the minor differences.

There's a fairly significant difference between playing five clones and playing five thousand clones.

He used that technique various times - just not for the clones.

Except, there isn't 5,000 closeups of clones, so that wouldn't be an issue.

The mass units from afar, CGI works best... up close, you need to have a man in a suit.

I think the best parts of the show are when she plays one of the clones pretending to be one of the other clones. Completely seamless and convincing, every time. She's amazing.

Sorry to go OT, but I love Tatiana. Wish the rumors about her & Rogue 1 had panned out.

I think many fans are reading too much into the whole thing. They are doing their film their way just like anyone else would. Some want to see dissing when none likely exists. Sad, but there it is.
