    Star Wars 26
    Book VI, Part I
    Yoda's Secret War

Scar Squadron has C3P0 after the incident with the stolen Star Destroyer. Determining that he has no knowledge of the Rebel base or future location, Vader orders that he be destroyed. Scar Squadron decides to use C3P0 as bait as they suspect his friends will come rescue him.

Cut to his friends arguing about rescuing him. While they argue, Luke notices that R2-D2 is missing. R2 has stolen an Xwing. Luke pursues him in his Xwing, but R2 commands S4, the astromech in Luke's Xwing, to disable Luke's Hyperdrive so he can't follow. After R2 takes off, Luke commands S4 to re-enable the Hyperdrive. While he laments on not being a strong enough Jedi to rescue C3P0, he decides to read from the Journal of Ben Kenobi.

Long before the Clone Wars, there was a child in need, and the Jedi answered the call. On an unnamed world, pirates discover that one of their own, a child, has the ability to move things with his mind. It's name is Lo. The pirates want the Jedi to pay for Lo if they are going to take him and turn him into a warriar. Yoda walks in and the pirates all laugh. Yoda uses the Force to control two attacking pirates to beat each other up.

The pirate leader orders all to attack. Cut to black and all pirates are defeated and Yoda saves the child. He gives Lo to Qui-Gon and Obi-wan to escort back to the Jedi Temple. (Obi-wan has his padawan braid and he's drawn to looks very much like he did in TPM.) He stands impressed of Yoda's ability to defeat a room full of pirates and is just a little sad that he and Qui-Gon missed out on all the action.

Yoda senses a disturbance in the Force, a calling that only he will follow. Qui-Gon does not feel it. He leaves them and heads towards a planet not on any star charts. The planet is surrounded by a very dense asteroid belt that Yoda pilots through with ease. After landing, he quickly discovers a half dozen children dressed like aborigines. (I think Yoda has found himself in the "Lord of the Flies". :p )

    Spoilers for the issue:

So the Yoda story only comprised about half of the issue; the first half was Threepio's interrogation and Artoo jetting off to rescue him. Felt kinda underwhelming because of that; both arcs felt like they were treading water. Yoda gets introduced on one mission, only to start a different one which then becomes a cliffhanger in about two pages.

Still, nice to see Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan show up. Presumably this takes place not long before TPM. And it looks like Jedi starfighters are around earlier in the canon timeline than in Legends.

Agh. That boy is clearly "too old to be trained" and it looks like this either happens mere days before TPM or they were too lazy to draw younger versions of Qui Gon and Obi Wan.

Did not like it at all. Short, rushed and the art is too obviously traced :(

Also, Luke's "he must've been the biggest, scariest Jedi ever!" is a bit on the nose. Yes, he's got to have that sort of opinion in order to revise it once he actually meets Yoda, but ugh, hardly subtle.

So... "Yoda's past" means "shortly before TPM"? That's a bit underwhelming.

I was very excited for this issue. But,
Um...I hate to say it, but...this issue was underwhelming and shorter than usual. First of all, the capture of Threepio. I hope to be proven wrong, but I get the feeling like that story is pretty pointless and will have little to no impact on anything. Vader seems not to care, so a potential "reunion" with his creation is not that likely to happen. The super stormtroopers or whatever they're called are kinda useless too, so here's hoping that Vader takes care of them sooner rather than later. And the Yoda story, well, I am eager to see where it's going in the next issues but in this one it was very disappointing. I agree with some of the other posts, it seems like the rescue of the kid served more as a way to include a Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan cameos than anything else. On the plus side, Qui-Gon Jinn! A short and non-impactful appearance, but as a Qui-Gon fan I can't complain. The cliffhanger makes me intrigued and totally uninterested at the same time. Who are the kids at the end? I want to find out, but their introduction was so out of the blue. Also, "Yoda went there because the Force called him" felt like the writer couldn't come up with a reason to get him there, so lets say the Force called him, problem solved! And the art...all I'm going to say about it is that the coloring is amazing, but I'm afraid that's it.

It's going to be interesting to see how the main series continues now that Aaron's the sole writer.

I like a lot of Aaron's work, but subtlety really isn't his forte. I'm starting to suspect the last 2 years owes more to Gillen than I thought.

Yeah, the main series is perhaps the least interesting of the recent comics. It's not been a patch on Vader, Han, and Poe, and Aphra's shaping up pretty well too.

I quite liked the Rebel Jail arc (perhaps more than anything else apart from Han Solo), which I believe was Aaron, so I won't completely write him off. Would agree though that the super-stormies are a tad much (but then, Gillen had all sorts of bonkers stuff in his Vader series).

Although for me, the Super Stormie Squad is pretty generic and not anywhere near as interesting as the bonkers stuff in Vader. I was holding out a little hope for some of the old bizarre Marvel to creep into the main series, but it's not really in the same league as Vader's abominations, Aphra's alternate histories, or Han's cosmic oddities.

The first issue has been released. Should it be discussed hear or in a different thread?

I liked this issue but I tend to agree. I'm a fan of Aaron's work but have found his run to be mixed at best. I'm not a fan of his characterizations. Han is a rogue but Aaron writes him as more of an unlikeable ***hole who hasn't contributed much to the series as a whole. His Leia isn't much better, with him shoehorning in a superhero "we don't kill" mindset in the Rebel Jail arc that is totally out of character. Leia's not someone who would kill in cold blood but she's a Rebel fighter, not a superhero who doesn't kill. Then we have Emo Luke leaving the Rebellion for a time and then decided to publicly announce in a cantina to a bunch of smugglers and criminals that he needs to be taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

This is very cool...and kinda sucky for me because I had plotted out a comic script (just for my own pleasure, mostly) detailing Yoda's history...I was going to name his species, home planet, his master, training the Jedi, Dooku, Qui-Gon, etc...this was years ago and I know they've delved into some of this by now, but I thought it was just a cool, fun little project...can't wait to see what Marvel has done with it!

If it makes you feel any better, this isn't going to have anything to do with that from all indications. It's just a random Yoda adventure, probably one with some emotional relevance to Luke's next adventure. It isn't "delving into his past" in an origin story kind of way.

I have a feeling Disney is going to have the same opinion about Yoda's past as Lucas did in that it is better to just be left a mystery.

I was a little underwhelmed by this issue as well. Will have to see how this arc plays out but it seems like anytime people try to create their very own Lord of the Flies type story it never turns out all that interesting.

I feel the complete opposite, I loved SCAR squadron and want less weirdness in the comics. I enjoyed this issue and loved the appearance of Qui-Gon, I'm really looking forward to the next one.

I just realized that this has never been touched on again and that in the horrendous finale of that arc I forgot what the whole point of Luke going to Nar Shaddaa was. Thanks for reminding me, after the first issue in a long time I've enjoyed of this series, that it is still a giant festering piece of dung, and Aaron is most likely the worst writer to ever touch Star Wars. Now we get to look forward to him being sole writer also. -.-

Anyway, I thought this issue was actually pretty dope. People complaining about the time period.... um it's being told by Obi-Wan, therefore Obi-wan has to have some connection to it.

The worst part of tracing is when they use sources featuring visibly different versions of a character. That's why the comics frequently showcase Episode III Palpatine and Episode VI Palpatine on the very same page... In this case, we have Episode I pre-CGI Yodaon the left and Episode III Yoda on the right...

Don't think so. The red cloak guy looks too tall to be Yoda.
