Here's something that was suggested to me that provoked much thought. Is each Star Wars movie made with a different genre in mind (apart from science fiction of course)? Do these genres affect the way each movie is played out, the intensity of drama, action, comedy and also music, cinematography and dialogue?

    For instance:

Episode I - The Phantom Menace: a family adventure film
Episode II - Attack of the Clones: a detective story or mystery
    Episode III - ???
Episode IV - A New Hope: an old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure
Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back: a dark thriller with horror elements
Episode VI - Return of the Jedi: a sword and sorcery fantasy

When i think about it each film certainly has strong elements that point towards each genre and seem to be more prevalent in one film than another.

What does anyone else think about this? :D

I think the first three basically mirror the last three from what you've written

Episode I - The Phantom Menace: a family adventure film
Episode IV - A New Hope: an old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure

    *kinda the same

Episode II - Attack of the Clones: a detective story or mystery
Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back: a dark thriller with horror elements

*again very similar elements, though AOTC is not as dark. Both also have romance elements.

    Episode III - ???

Episode VI - Return of the Jedi: a sword and sorcery fantasy

    * I think E3 could turn out to be very similar to the "sword and sorcery fantasy" idea.

Episode III could also be a Film Noir.

Actually, I think it's gonna be more of a tragedy. Like Hamlet or something.

I also find this thought of different genres intriguing, NZPoe. They're all matinee action serials, but it's true that they all have their own take on that genre.

All the films so far are meant for the family, so you could say they are all family adventures.
Every film is like ANH in the swash buckling adventures.

I really think the films are all the same, I don't agree that each is a different genre.
TESB is darker than the others, but I see all of SW as one film.
Each episode is a section of the film.
In the end it is one Star Wars.

Ep. I- Adventure story and introduction

Ep. II- Politically-centric mystery story that turns into a war movie, with a romantic subplot

Ep. III- Intense drama on both personal and political scales

    Ep. IV- Mythic adventure

Ep. V- Starts out as a war movie, then becomes a personal drama with a romantic subplot

Ep. VI- Starts as an adventure with personal motives, then becomes an intense personal drama against the backdrop of a large-scale war

They are also all fantasy/sci-fi movies, obviously

Ep. I TPM- Adventure, war story with some humor for the kids and an introuduction

Ep. II AOTC-Adventure, war story with a romance and a Politically-centric mystery

Ep. III- We shall wait and see

Ep. IV ANH- Adventure, war story

Ep. V TESB- Adventure war story with some romance and personal dramas

Ep. VI ROTJ- Adventure war story with a great personal drama, with some humor for the kids, a romance, and a conclusion

They all have humor, mythology, war, adventure, so they are all very similar.

    2 is definitely film noir

    1) shadows of vertical blinds are everywhere
    2) alley ways
    3) informants
    4) double crosses
    5) puppet master villain
    6) evil dame
    7) mystery
    8) good guys are played for fools

I think of Episode II as much more of an straight ahead action movie than a mystery (although Obi Wan's detective stuff is my favorite part of the movie.) It is interesting, though, how the Hoth scene at the beginning of Empire is somewhat mirrored by the Clone War scene at the end of AOTC.

    I think.

Episode I - pure fantsy film,

    Episode II - love story/msystery

Episode III - Action/tragedy (there will probably be way more action in Episode III than any other one)

    ANH - Science Fiction/Western

    ESB - dark drama

    ROTJ war movie
