I watched the SWHS as an 8 year old in 1978. I thought it was OK then and sort of liked it. It was not until I obtained an illicit copy of it last year that I realized how truly terrible and painful it was. Boy, was I duped as a kid. And shame on anyone involved in this. It was not a career highlight for anyone of the guilty parties, cast or crew.

Watching paint dry or the trees grow is more interesting and easier on your psyche. Nothing that the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 people endured, from Hobgoblins to Manos, could be worse than the SW Holiday Special. Lumpy and Itchy are grounds for sending anyone into therapy.

The most positive thing I can say is that if I had but an hour to live, I might watch the show again, because every minute of it would seem like an eternity.

Please don't petition for this to be released. You really don't know the havoc that would be unleashed upon the world. As many have astutely pointed out, it just goes to show how something so wonderful can go horribly wrong. There is a reason why this project has only seen the light of day illegally, and why Lucas has fought so hard to suppress it. I think I'd rather be hung upside down for hours on end, be deprived of sleep and food for days, and have my fingernails ripped out than to be subjected to watching that pile of ... umm ... trash ... again.

P.S. YodaJeff, I was trying to avoid the use of obscenity, even as accurately descriptive as it might have been, and from mentioning illegal activities. Hope I succeeded. And by the way, you are a great moderator.

The only other nice thing I can say about it is that it is proof that everything Star Wars-related that Lucas touches does not turn to gold. It is an example of cash-cow marketing at its worst. A DVD would be held up as further proof by all SW bashers everywhere that Lucas has no soul and is only out to get money.

Even Betty Crocker burns a cake every now and then, but the SWHS goes way beyond that. Knowing a little of the history behind the special and how Lucas was very hands-off during the project has made me not hold Lucas, Harrison, Carrie, or Mark responsible for it. (Being involved with this would push any normal person over the edge, so Carrie's drug use during the making of TESB is probably attributable to SWHS.) But I can see why Lucas would not want anyone to know about this wretched piece of infamy and to ignore or deny any place in the gloried halls of SW to it.

It's bizarre. . . I bought the tape for the same reason as many of you: pure curiosity. Is it that bad? Oh, yeah. It's that bad.

The problem is, I've watched it a total of 5 times since that purchase in 2000.

    WHY????????

Becuase it's like a train wreck. You know it's horrible. . . but you just can't look away.

Would I buy it on DVD? Sure, if it only cost 3 bucks. Don't count this as a signature. I'd buy it, but only to be a completist. I'd probably only watch it once, and just chapter skip to the Boba Fett cartoon whenever I wanted to see it.

Actually, the best part of the copy I have is the commercials, and they wouldn't make it to the DVD. :p

I 'obtained' a copy of the Holiday special a few monts ago and it took me 3 sit downs to finish it. It is by far the worst thing to happen to Star Wars ever. If it was ever released on DVD I would unfortunately still buy it though.

Man, I LOVE the Holiday Special. Of course, I love horrible movies in general. I'd kill for a truly watchable copy of that thing.

    I'm signing! Here's why:
I've seen the Fett 'toon and heard the stupid Life Day song, but never seen the whole thing. Sure, it's gotta be crappy. But, meanwhile, we're being Force-fed "Jedi Rocks", Han stepping on Jabba's tail, and Greedo shooting first. Until the original cut of the trilogy is re-released, I think every fan should judge for themselves exactly what "crap" is.

Ive never seen it but I keep hearing about the holiday special and I think it would be a good addition if it's added in with a dvd box set of all six star wars movies when it eventualy comes out

I have never seen it, and im also very curious. I think it'd be cool if it was an easter egg on the Episode 3 DVD! Or maybe the OT DVD's!

I just [edited] sat down to watch 12 minutes of it this morning. That's all I could manage.

I fast forwarded, curious to see an animated Boba Fett and a singing Carrie Fisher. The absolute worst was Mark Hamill in makeup. I think that's when I hit "close" on the video window.

Coming from a guy that managed to read "The Crystal Star" from cover to cover, I don't think I'll ever watch The Star Wars Holiday Special from start to finish. I can't imagine why anyone would want this on DVD.

If Harrison Ford ever gets called for a lifetime achievement award, I'd suggest to some practical jokers to hijack the audio/video room, and make it play Holiday Special instead of the usual montage of various scenes in various movies. That would be pretty funny. :p

YJ edit: Don't mention illegal ways of obtaining the show.

Call me crazy but I loved almost all of Ford's scenes in the Holiday special. Espicially that opening scene. I can't help it, he even acted good in the Holiday Special.

Sorry, Lucas could change ti so every blaster in Star Wars is a walkie talkie and it would still be a far superior thing to whatever the HS is. I won't even call it a movie, or a show, or film. There's nothing enntertaining about it. It should never be on DVD. It doesn't deserve to be seen in the quality DVD can produce. It should be only viewed on Crappy VHS transfers, or choppy internet files. That's all it deserves.

Count me in. Sure there are a lot of bad (as in not good) parts of this show. "song and dance" stuff thats has nothing to do with Star Wars.

But those Small parts like the "Fett Cartoon" and the Empire looking for Han & Chewe.

On a DVD I would use the Chapter's that had the songs and skip over those.

that would make a 55min show about aprox 20 mins long. :)

The Wookie sex fantasy scene is the best thing ever. For that scene alone, this movie must be re-released.

    ...

    "I'm your fantasy..." LOL :)
    Did Lucas write the dialogue?

Several months and only a hand full of posters for a petition. Come on people, it is more likely to see a sequel to "Howard the Duck" than it is to see the Star Wars Holiday Special. I for one saw it in 1979 and I remember because I was sick that day. I even blew chunks during the airing on CBS. Star Wars did bring my hopes up but it was aweful when I look back at it.

I will not sign the petition because the SWHS blows chunks.
