The grizzled human enforcer, Toseland, breathed a heavy sigh of relief as the four fugitive spacecraft, especially that big destroyer, jumped out of the system.

"Boss, that could have been worse." Rossi's voice informed from his own Dagger, off to Toseland's right.

He clicked his comlink twice, responding non-verbally.

"You idiots!" Bree's voice. "Do you know how lucky you were just now?"

Now, the chief spoke. "Funnily enough, yes. At least Administrator Raynor cannot complain. Much. Let's go home; I need to change my uniform."

    "Heh-heh, me too."

"You guys see the strange way that capital ship jumped? Like it opened a circular scarlet rift in space and dove in?"

Toseland figured he woud check his visual scan logs on the way back, but admitted with rare candour, "Darling, my life was flashing before my eyes; I wouldn't have seen an Imperial Star Destroyer."

Taab looked through his T-visor at the wealth of credits that he had found inside the case. He briefly wondered if he would allowed to keep its contents, something of a finder's fee, but doubted the Skipper played things quite like that as others in his past had...

... So instead he had called the Captain to look over their good fortune. He too seemed quite amazed by what they had found. This Two Thumbs would be able to pay them a lot more then the already
agreed upon amount. And given the man's attempted taking of the Skipper hostage Taab was prepared to extract it all from him. But the Captain was still exploring the case "There's enough credits
    here to..."

Even better, a secret compartment. Taab moved in to help Lasso open it safely, finding what appeared to be an old book inside. "I wouldn't be surprised that there's a pressure sensor that is set off once you remove the book. It could be another booby trap, but I doubt it. It would probably send some type of data burst to the nearest Imperial outpost to alert the authorities that its been removed. And we could have a whole fleet of warships on top of us within hours."

Taab nodded his head in agreement with Ler, it was looking now like the credits were to serve as a distaction from this, the true prize that Two Thumbs had brought aboard. And any distraction as expensive asd this made the book they protected must be much much more valuable.

"Better go wake sleeping beauty. I want to know what is so important that you hide a book under all of that credit. We could buy a world and hire a small army to defend it and still have enough left over to retire and not lift a finger the rest of the days."

"As you wish," was the only answer Taab trusted himself to make at that. His years of bounty hunting Jedi had earned him a small fortune as well, but the amount here would be a great way to add to it. He shook his head, this was a unit, and he was sure that any "bonus" payout would be spread amongst everyone. He headed aft and removed his buy'ce. He knew the skipper didn;t like them wearing helmets all the time, but he hadn't had a chance to until now. Al'kesh, who still held his blaster on the sleeping and shackled form of Two Thumbs, spoke up. "He's been sleeping like a baby. I didn't know we were taking on captives..." A hard look from Taab shut him up at that point. The less the new crewmembers knew right now the better. If the Skipper wanted to let them in on what they found, that was his business.

Taab unshackled the prisoner from the bulkhead, though he left his hands manacled, and then woke Two Thumbs with another injection. Bringing him forward to the cockpit he exclaimed loudly. "The
Captain has questions for you, and after the way you treated him I suggest you answer nicely. If not, he may turn you over to me."

Masked under his buy'ce Atin missed the subtext of what was going on between Street and Jeth. "Alright kid, let's see what this place has to offer, I heard they have this nice spot called the Prime Idiot. Good place to start." He looked around to his comrades, the disguises they wore were simple but effective. Atin didn't have to worry about such, his bucket and armor afforded him anonymity even as they would draw attention. But anyone who did notice him would just see a Mandalorian, and though the style of one's amror could be distinctive, it was also easily changed. No one who took the time to notice him would gather any information of real import.

Atin started off after Street, looking to anyone they encountered as a hired bodyguard or an out of work mercenary. At least that's what he hoped. He had been to a number of less then reputable places with his father in the past, but rarely had he been so far from him should trouble occur. He always knew his father had his back if something went awry, now he was forced to put his faith in the hands of these aruetiise, and though he wasn't sure yet if he could fully trust them, the feeling of freedom he felt at being away from his father was intoxicating. For now and other times like this, out form under his father's shadow, would be the time to prove his worth. These would be the times where he would truly earn the title of Mandalorian.

"Have you heard of anything big happening here involving freelance groups? Pirate, mercenary, or otherwise?"

Rav shrugged, "A few things here or there," adding mentally that the man sounded Coruscant...which always sent red flags up out here, "The usual Hutt contracts for smuggling or transport protection. A few bounties here or there, but nothing that screams 'opportunity' if you know what I mean. A few mercenary groups came in last week, but most are too militaristic for my tastes and most are all blasters and no brains. I don't want to be overpaid cannon fodder, thank you very much. And most of the groups are coming fresh off of Rebel contracts...don't know how much I like being underpaid target practice for Imperial Troops either. But, I hear a new group has arrived, just now in fact. Its all the buzz, made some impacts against the Empire. Ah, something with an "M"...ah Money Makers...no, that's not right...Ma's Little Monsters....no....ah, Mercs! Yes, the "Mercs"! Have you ever heard of them before? Something more then cannon fodder contract? I'm running between broke and desperate, so I hope their the ticket out of here."

Seira smiled as she nodded to the bar tender then turned her attention back to Maya. “Just got back from a run actually, I’m laying low until the heat dies down,” she answered carefully. Maybe asking suddenly didn’t seem like a good idea. It was a gut feeling. “What about you? What are you up to these days?”
Giving away a shake of the head it seem that she wasn't the only one that trouble seem to follow around. Before she could get out the first word out to Seira. There came wheeling up her drinks she had order. Turning her head towards the one that just wheeled up with her drinks taking hers then looking at rum milk glass with the saucer on top. "Here you go, Hun'."
You want the Rum milk I order for my tag along my father to attach to me, or something else. giving a nod that her drink was good, after taking a sip. Only to now wonder where the in the world he could be with her pet AKK dog. It wasn't like he was hard to handle. Smirking as thought out in the street could hear someone far way shriek. Giving way to a little light chuckle.
Out in the street there was Tvavo, pulling hard on Hunter's leash to keep him under control. He had long ago lock on his master through the force, being able to feel her out. If that wasn't enough it was the smell trail Maya had left. Still that didn't keep the AKK dog from looking around at all the interesting sights, sounds and smells. One could say he could smell fear coming off from those that got to close to him and his handler. That seem less then thrarled that he had to go fetch this beast of Maya's. At less he was getting payed nicely by her father to keep an eye on his only daughter. What he knew about her, he had known back then he would turn down the credits and job in heart beat. What was his thought what could one little young Zelton be? Easy, there boy, you be with Maya in a few."

Something more then cannon fodder contract? I'm running between broke and desperate, so I hope their the ticket out of here," said Sal Book (OOC: Rav Cater).

Cain was still wary, but he relaxed a little and let his hand drift off his blaster slowly, hoping that Book didn't notice. He still felt there might be some malicious intent in the man's plans, but he didn't seem the type to pull a blaster and start shooting in the middle of a bar. More importantly, he seemed to have some information about the Mercs. Apparently not much considering how difficult it was to remember the name. How do you confuse the Mercs with Ma's Little Monsters or the Money Makers anyway? Cain didn't buy it. He knew more, if only a little, but at least this man seemed to confirm, somewhat, that Cain was indeed in the right place.

Now to loosen his tongue. Cain pulled a credit chip with a value of 200 credits and slapped it onto the counter, getting the attention of the bartender. "Place that bottle of Maker's Stamp on the counter and bring a glass for my new acquaintance here," he said. The bartender happily accommodated and took the credit chip. He overpaid, but only to give Book some indication of that Cain was a big player, despite the fact that he was not. Cain poured some of the expensive whiskey for Book.

"I hope you like Corellian whiskey," said Cain with a slight grin as he slid the small glass over toward Book. "These Mercs sound intriguing. I've heard whispers and rumors, but not much more," he lied. "What can you tell me about them? What makes you think the rumors that they are her are true? There are many rumors surrounding this station. Did you know I heard that there was actually an Ewok starfighter pilot for hire out here? Some of these rumors can be outrageous."

"Ewok starfighter pilot, uh?" Rav replied, nodding thanks to the drinks and taking a sip, "Now, that's a rumor if you ever heard one!" Rav shook his head, "But I've heard crazier things out here on the Rim. As for the Mercs," Rav shrugged, "Docking boy down at the hanger. A little Rodian boy, his name is Ra'chec," Rav was actually telling the truth here...he just left out the fact that the rag-dressed boy was being paid by Rav with food to be his own little spy, "He came to me saying that the Mercs had landed. He knows I was looking for a job and from one unemployed person to a homeless boy, we keep each other informed. I promised him if I got a job, I'd take him with me. All I really know is that their ole Cap, Taller, had some beef with the Empire. There's a new leader in charge....don't know who they are. They follow through with their contracts and get paid. Good enough for me. What do you know about them?"

Rav privately wondered if Cain actually knew how much he could drink...and not feel the effects of a loose tongue. Rav guessed it was time to show the senior how pirates drank. Or, a course, Rav could pull the whole show of appearing to be more friendly after a few drinks.

Kasumi had told Buddy to stay with her ship and to keep her up to date on things that he may monitor from there as best as he could. She could tell by his mournful whistle that he was less than pleased by this. Kasumi told him that is was ok, and that she would be back soon. Buddy sunk back to a place where he could watch the X-wing and the bay.

Kasumi watched the rest of the team and kept an eye open around her. She had left her Jedi robes and had gone with the camouflage pants and the dark green shirt with her leather vest. While this was a place of smugglers and she could have more than likely passed by with her Jedi robes, she was not about to put the rest of the team at risk. Normally she would say her family, but unfortunately, there was no need to say that any more.

This place was one that few people got to, and those that did were the best. So, it was time to live up to that, and play another role off. She would have to take that cue from Fress, as she was the one that was able to pull of an alias before. But Kasumi also knew that there was the chance that there were people that would know Fress...so she did her best to watch peoples eyes and see if she could get a sense from them about if they recognized Fress or not.

Cain took another sip of his drink before responding, taking as long as possible to consider his answer carefully. "I've heard about the same that you have described. Anybody that can anger the Empire AND pay well seems like an improved career path over the endless and unstable contract work of freelancing. Almost too good if you ask me, and while I've done well for myself in the freelance life," he said, taking another thoughtful sip, "I feel as if I need some sort of change. Especially considering, for the last freighter I escorted, I almost got vaped by imps.” Cain finished off the last in his glass, leaving another slight pause. “As far as their leader, I had also heard there was a change in leadership. I wonder what happened to their former one. Just another question to ask them I suppose."

Cain poured some more whiskey into his glass. He knew he could handle it, even if it had been a while since he had whiskey of this quality in the Outer Rim. "So, about this little Rodian friend of yours. Did he get a look at the Mercs themselves when they docked or any leads on where they might be? They seem like an outfit I might want to join up with."

"The Captain has questions for you, and after the way you treated him I suggest you answer nicely. If not, he may turn you over to me."

Lasso got up from his kneeling position from the briefcase of credits. As he stood to full height, Taller's words came to his mind...

...Reaching full height, Lasso looked "Two Thumbs" up and down, then shifted his gaze to the briefcase and then back to Two Thumbs, "Care to explain? The book too..."

"Why?" Two Thumbs said, "I'm a dead man already. I'm dead for threatening you and now here I am, at your mercy. I'm dead if I escape, because the ISB will catch up sooner then later. And I'm dead because I'm a wanted criminal....the price on my head will make bounty hunters flock to me."

"Your wrong on the first one," Lasso replied, adding, "A much wiser man then me," Lasso was referencing Captain Taller, "Once told me that we were all the same, all scum, and not worth more then the paper our warrants were written on...so all we had was what we fought for in our hearts and for our loved ones. It never matters if we we're right in our life...it never did and never will. What matters is that we stood by our convictions, when everyone else was telling us we're wrong. So, leading by example of that much wiser man, I'm going to spare your life and not turn you over to the ISB."

Whatever hope Two Thumbs had growing quickly vanished as he lowered his head, "They'll catch up to me."

"Not if your with us," Lasso replied, seeing Two Thumbs' head raise in unexpected hope, "All we have is each other out here on the Rim. So I'm giving you a choice. I'll spare your life and you can venture out into the darkness by yourself, after you explain the contents of this briefcase. Or you can join us, pledge by our code, live by our code, and die by our code if need be. And explain the contents of this briefcase. If you join us and betray us, I'll space you personally from an airlock. Do you understand?"

Two Thumbs nodded, "Perfectly. I want to join...it beats the ISB alone. But why take the risk with them tracking you down because of me?"

"Because, they would already track us down with you or without you for this briefcase. And second, the ISB are old friends of ours in the most unpleasant of terms. So, the briefcase and the book?"

    Location: Berroll’s Donn star system

The coffees that the twi’lek had brought up, had been handed out while the bridge crew waited for Merc Ten and the Hunk of Junk to board.

Yav stood by Wa Yay at her station, awaiting news from the being down in the hangar bays.
He hadn’t told her in so many words, or any words come to that, but any more impertinence from her, and she would be wearing his coffee, which was why he wasn’t wolfing it; he wanted to leave enough to make a point.

“TIE Hangar reports that the two Jod starfighters have landed safely.” She reported, looking at her console, then turning to Yav. “They want to know if you want them debriefed?”

The elf shook his head. "Negative. They can go off-duty, or if they are our Alert One pilots, to stay in their crafts till the end of their shifts."

“Copy that.” She leaned down slightly for a look at another of her station’s smaller screen’s, showing a sleek yellow-green ship easing into the larger main hangar. “And Merc Ten is aboard too.”

Yav took a sip of his coffeine, appreciative that whoever had made them had thought to put milk and a sweetener in. “Good. As soon as the Hunk of Junk is aboard, raise shields and take us to Port Haven. You have the bridge, Petty Officer.” He looked over at Williams, who was still sitting with his arms crossed, on the Communications Station.

The Chief Engineer had been watching the two Mercs, waiting for the next breakout of hostilities. He seemed to perk up when he realised he had the elf’s attention. "You want something from me, Son?"

"Round up the Engineers and techs, please. Tell them to get whatever sleep they need between now and Port Haven, because I want them working to install that Golan Arms emplacement on our ventral hull, behind the docking aperture. I have not seen it yet, but I expect it’ll be much heavier than our existing quad-lasers; Golan Arms tend to go for heavy-duty designs."

While Tim called his daughter on his comlink, Yavscout headed into the Ready Room, where his guest was already sitting in one of the guest chairs, clearly revelling in the comfort.

He locked the door, and smiled down at her as he crossed to the light table, and sat in his own chair behind it, planting his elbows on surface, making shadows of his lower face, as he studied the flesh-coloured features of the female before him.

Apart from some extra worry lines, there was no evidence that she had been incarcerated in an Imperial prison for years on end. She had the scarred lekku, but he knew that had been caused in the line of duty.

"I heard you were on the same ship as Darth Vader!" Was her opening line. "What did you do?"

    "I died."

Sounil laughed. "Yeah, you do that."

"Yeah, I do." Yav’s own smile was a bit wan. "But this one was different." He rose from the chair and zipped down his grey one-piece to his waist, then lifted the white undershirt.

The elf’s bare olive-green torso showed a wicked scar from his right side, two-thirds the way across his stomach. "I normally heal completely, as if nothing had ever happened. This time, the damage shows."

Must look worse from her angle, the elf realised, judging from her expression. "That was no lightsabre, Yav’. If it was Vader that took you out, he wanted to make you suffer. What did you do to him?"

Yav zipped up, and sat down. "One Toblerone joke too far; who the hell knows. Didn't even remember getting killed, just woke up aboard the Johnny Boy in a medical coccoon. You are the reason I left the Service, you know that?"

Sounil rocked back in her seat, the change of subject a bit sudden. "Me? What in Flamewind did I do?"

    "Naboo."

Sounil went silent, eyes down as she contemplated her own hands and lap, thinking about the past. Her younger days. That time.

"Would you take the shot again?" Yav prodded carefully. He had not talked to this twi'lek since the moment he was asking about; had not had much chance to. She had been a senior field agent leading a team in guarding the then Queen of Naboo. He had been one of a dozen medical technicians air-dropped into the field because the teams had been getting creamed by the bad guys.

"They'd just shot Hardcastle. Bragged about it. Who knew they had wired themselves to their ship's reactor?"

"Report said that they had warned they had done that."

"And I was supposed to believe that?" She leaned forward, glaring at the elf across the desk, "I was not letting them go, Yav'."

Yavscout studied her, unsure where to take this. Back when the incident that had levelled a portion of Naboo's lush landscape, leaving a burning crater, he had thought her reckless in her actions. He had quit the Service and settled on Naboo to help the people of Theed rebuild their shattered lives.

He had wanted to tell her, if she would still do that again, she was no good to him. But he was an agent now, and in his undercover guise, responsible for many lives here. If someone killed one of his people, and he had the drop on them apart from some claim that they had booby-trapped themselves, what would he do?

Well, if they were Kingdom of Jod, and wearing Authority ship patches, he'd probably let 'em go, cos those fraggers were crazy.

He sighed. "With what I have learned since being with the Mercs, I know there are people out there more willing to end it all than let the other side triumph. Its an easy out, and we recently had a Jod warship sacrifice itself to save us, but the amount of times we get jumped by the Empire, that really does no good to anybody."

"Well, scuttlebutt among the King's Army is that you people are being tracked somehow. They don't see as much activity during Beast campaigns as they do since joining the Mercs."

Yav sighed again, softer this time. "Jim Palso had the same idea when we had Imperial spacetroopers holed up in our bow."

Sounil sat up. "Are they still here?!"

"No. Blew a hole in the hull while we were at the Greater Javin and got picked up by a freighter. We sent fighters after them but they got away."

"Mm, did you check to see if they left anything behind?."

Yav' shook his head. "Engineer Bromley's team spent several hours in there repairing the damage and installing a torpedo capability. Never found anything."

"Well to be fair, they were not looking for anything." Mistry pointed out.

He narrowed his gaze, studying the twi'lek. "You retired from SGIS. Why did you identify yourself to Lieutenant Zotoman as an agent?"

"Living on the Block wasn't fun and games-"

"I don't suppose it was." He stopped when he saw her show a palm, indicating that she wanted to finish what she was saying. He settled back into his chair.

"To survive, I felt I needed an identity to cling on to. Thinking of myself as an active agent again was all I had."

"We're, uh, they, are nowhere near what they were during the Republic. The Service searched for you and the many missing personnel, but even if we had known you were on the Block, I don't think we could have mounted the scale of rescue operation that the Mercs did. No way."

    "Thank you."

"Thank Captain Taller." Yav paused, but felt something had to be said. "That's not to say SGIS wouldn't have attempted something, even if it was only to point Agent Nifesta in your direction, wind the key in his back, and let him go."

Her laughter was full on and good to hear. "Mitch is still around?! That is good news; the guy is irrepressible."

Yavscout took out his comlink and rolled it around between thumb and forefinger for a while, pensively. "I do have someone looking into the possibility that we are carrying a tracer. Comms expert called C.T.."

"I know the name. One of the GAR clones on the Block. Seems to be a good man."

"Well, he hasn't called in yet." He stood up suddenly, the chair moving back as he did so. "Fancy doing something together?"

SOunil smiled and gestured her coffeine cup towards him. "You mean like get a refill?"

"No Something useful. I'm taking the ship to the Mercs' home port of Port Haven. If we are carrying a locator beacon, we need to find it and nuetralise it before we get there. So how about you and I-" He pointed a finger down at her, then tapped his own chest, "do something about that, and go check it out personally."

As he crossed to the doorway, Sounil drained the tepid liquid through the slot in the plastic lid, and after a moment's hesitation, put the cup on the light table.

The elf did not notice, but grimaced and paused as he was about to hit the door release. "Oh poodoo, I forgot. Williams."

"What about him?" Sounil was the taller of the two when she was standing beside him, he noticed.

"He likes me to stay on the bridge. Security, he says."

    "Aren't you Captain?"

"Yeah, but he acts like he's Level 50, got his own magical horse and everything."

"And you are Level 27, I remember. So basically, he's like your Dad."

"Yeah, not that I particularly mind, but hold on a moment while I mem' Camouflage. I'll invis' us, and we can head down there."

"Because, they would already track us down with you or without you for this briefcase. And second, the ISB are old friends of ours in the most unpleasant of terms. So, the briefcase and the book?"

Lasso's words hung in Two Thumbs mind like a echo; staggering like a man revisited by a ghost, he sat down in the nearby sensor seat that was empty. "She was young," Two Thumbs began, "Young twenties---"

"Two Thumbs, we're not here for a personnel profile. The briefcase," Lasso indicated the object in question, crossing his arms over his chest.

Two Thumbs looked between Lasso and Taab, "Its not a history lesson!" He bit out with sudden contempt; he calmed himself, "Its the reason why I stole the briefcase from the ISB Central Office. Well, part of the reason."

"Whoa," Lasso said, "The ISB Central Office? How in the Force did you do that!?"

Two Thumbs shrugged as if the job was nothing more then a normal gig for him, "The Emperor had the ISB under orders to crush anything regarding the Jedi Order. Wipe it from memory. Well, the ISB was handed a item from the Imperial Palace Vaults that the Emperor wanted personally investigated. It was far from Jedi...or Sith. At least at first. It was an arrest record book for the planet of Axum."

"An arrest book and millions of credits?" Lasso replied, "Where is this leading?"

"Does the Brass Soldiers of Axum ring any bells?" Two Thumbs asked, looking between the two.

Lasso gave thought to the question, pulling out his reasonable knowledge of galactic history, "Rings a bell. Thousands of Pre-Republic soldiers frozen in brass by some magic. Why?"

"Thirty-five thousand to be precise," Two Thumbs said, "By the woman in that book. Supposedly. Ever hear of Rhen Var?"

Lasso shrugged, "Outer Rim planet. A frozen rock with Jedi statu---" Lasso looked at Two Thumbs suddenly, "Your saying that a Jedi froze those soldiers?"

"I'm not saying anything," Two Thumbs said, "I'm letting the evidence speak for itself. When I stole the briefcase, I wasn't able to recover the files in time from the investigator assigned to the case, so I made sure everything on his computer was wiped cleaned so no one else could follow up on his work---and then blasted the thing and fried the hard drive for good measure. Fortunately for me, I have a holographic and audiographic memory. The investigator was in the process of writing up a report on his findings so far and had a team ready to go to Rhen Var----hence all the money to fund the mission secretly---but I got to him before he ever sent that report. So, no one in the ISB or the Emperor himself knows what he found...all the ISB knows is that the Emperor is breathing down their necks with the investigator to his little book dead and all the information missing, as well as the briefcase itself. Naturally, the Emperor wants the missing briefcase. But so did my client. Problem is----as you saw on Cloud City---things didn't go as planned and with the credits in the briefcase, I made a break for it and that where you two helped me."

    "And your client?" Lasso asked.

"An Imperial Lord in the Emperor's Imperial Court. A course, he wouldn't admit to it, I had to find the information on my own."

"And what's so important with a ancient arrest book that an Imperial Lord would betray the Emperor?"

Two Thumbs shook his head, "I don't know. But with the ISB ready to throw that many credits to a civilian dig operation on Rhen Var...I would think something pretty big."

Lasso glanced to Taab, then back to Two Thumbs, "What is in for you?"

Two Thumbs shrugged, "Staying alive. If I could find buyer for the book, lets say a historical collector, I could make thousands off of the book. Take the briefcase money with me, plus the sale of the book, and I could of lived the rest of my days in some Outer Rim planet on the beach, as far away from the Empire as I could get. But, then you all rescued me and..." Two Thumbs shrugged again, "Like I said, staying alive. You have the money and my life. I would be lying if I said I wouldn't want to see that money tripled, get my fair-share, and see what is so important about an arrest book to the Emperor. Maybe start life a new with a false identity."

Lasso nodded, looking to Taab, "Take him in the back and lock 'em up. Then get back here."

"But you said that if I decided to join you, I would be given another chance!" Two Thumbs protested.

"I did," Lasso replied, "But I didn't say when I would give you that chance. So until I have something more then a nickname from you and I believe more of your story, I want you where I know you won't cause any trouble. Because of right now, I'm not inclined to go on a wild goose chase for some wild dream the Emperor has about a book that looks like its going to fall apart if you touch it. Get him out of here, Chief," Lasso said.

As Two Thumbs struggled against the larger Chief, the thief yelled back as the cockpit door closed, "My name is Rusty "Two Thumbs" McWilliams!"

"The name is a start," Lasso mumbled to himself as he started; Taab soon entered back into the cockpit as Lasso was finishing up putting all of the credits into a stack of their amounts, "Okay," Lasso said as he finished putting the credits aside, motioning Taab to take a seat, "What's your thoughts Taab? I have a feeling the 'civilian dig' is nothing but a cover story...the ISB would just transfer the funds under their own name to the company in question. The ISB isn't afraid of anyone and their not going to start being afraid anytime soon. So the question comes down to what are all those Imperial credits for? And what really is that book...once Ler can disable the last booby trap, we'll have a better idea. But even if his story checks out with a tattered old book, what do you make of Rhen Var and the connection he's trying to draw between the two? And the twenty something year old girl he mentioned at first....you think there's a connection between the book and this girl? The other part of why he stole the book?"

"...I wonder what happened to their former one. Just another question to ask them I suppose."

That last comment, Rav had to smile at inwardly. While yes, Rav wondered too what had happened to the gallant Rick Taller! So he could kill the man. But maybe, just maybe, Taller was already dead and half of Rav's revenge would be complete. The next would be the steal of the Mercs' command ship, the Johnny Boy; the Empire had stooped as low as the Hutts on a bounty to bring the Mercs into Imperial hands.

Cater was an honest criminal, if honest could be used, keeping to himself. But since Port Haven and the Mercs...his chances at survival on the Rim were now dependent on the Hutts, something far worse then death. And if he didn't pull off the steal of a lifetime---a whole Marauder-class Corvette---he minus well be a walking dead man once the Hutts found him. But maybe, just maybe, Rav's sins against the Mercs could be forgiven and he could be granted a fresh start with the mercenary group, a way out of Hutt service. But like three-fourth's of the people on the Rim were lairs, Rav's hopes of a fresh start and a life of freedom from the Hutts was just as likely as a person surviving of the one-fourth's honest people on the Rim. His chances were slim either way. His altered facial structure would have to do for now, a disguise complete with voice alteration. On the Rim, identification was often a side note in such circles as the Mercs; most people either used fake IDs or for the ones that kept their names legit, were in the employ of pirates who didn't care in the first place. But, in the odd chance that the Mercs did a medical check-up, Rav's files were conveniently altered to a fake ID profile in the Imperial database...thanks to the Hutts. A walking death sentence often came with its perks.

"So, about this little Rodian friend of yours. Did he get a look at the Mercs themselves when they docked or any leads on where they might be? They seem like an outfit I might want to join up with."

"I figure," Rav replied, "If the Mercs were looking for a crew, they'd start at the bars. And that's what my friend told me, that they were heading this way. Since were both looking for work, minus well sign up together, huh?" Rav raised his glass, "To a new friendship and adventures out on the Rim?"

Camo'd up to the nines, Yavscout bounded down the impressive wall-hugging white staircase that descended from the bridge down into the main hull, coming to a stop on the bottom step, just out of sight of the Kings Army soldier guarding the turbolifts.

A second later, Sounil barged into him from behind, materialising them both and pushing him off the step and into full view of the trooper who started to reach for his weapon, then stopped.

"Ah, its only you. Captain. Agent Mistry."

    "Private Shoemaker."

"Private. " Yav nodded. He gestured to the stark surroundings. "Post to your liking?"

"Wish I'd packed my dark glasses, sir. Other than that, I'm fine." The Kings Army man looked down for a moment, then back up at the two. "Oh."

Yav exchanged a curious look with Sounil. "Oh?"

"We're moving, and if I am any judge, accelerating to lightspeed."

"Ah-ha," The elf nodded, "the Hunk of Junk is aboard, clearing our jump to hyperspace." He had changed into his blue and gold Go Team armoured spacesuit, and was carrying the goldfish-bowl helmet in one hand.

The trooper had called the turbolift, and the door for the first to arrive slid smoothly and silently aside, behind and beside Shoemaker.

Just as he was about to step inside, Yav stopped and turned to Shoemaker. "Private."

    "Captain?"

"When Captain Palso came aboard, he brought a consignment of, of," He snapped his fingers trying to remember, "Cryo-Guns! Get on to Security and find out where they were stored. Agent Sounil and I are heading to Deck Four."

    "Yes, Captain."

Yav stepped into the lift and hitting the floor button as Sounil stepped in beside him, the door closing behind her.

But I couldn't count it. Couldn't be sure it was all proper before I accepted another life risking escort job. "Hey, Kinge. I thought we agreed only cash, gems, or stocks for payment. You know. Ever since that Spika job."

I shook my head. I'd have at make that point clear to our new pseudo employers when we had a chance to sit down and actually work out the terms of our contract. Until then... "Contractors, Sigma Flare. Following you through. We'll work out our continued employment on the other side."

Palso scrolled down the landing ramp of the Hunk of Junk, a mixed look of self-importance and confusion. While the smuggler was as egotistic as they got---and a trait he hoped to pass onto his little brother, if only for survival's sake---he was confused as to where he should go now. Technically, Yav, Williams, Xan, and himself acted as the command structure, with Wa Yay bringing up a hard-line bridge crew in support. Or so Palso had it as such in his mind. So, where exactly did a smuggling captain belong among a crew of mercenaries, James Bond special agents, and Jedi?

Lasso withdrew his comlink from his belt and thumbed it on as he stood at the bottom of the Hunk of Junk's ramp, "Williams, Palso here. Where do you need me?"

When this little joy ride was done with the DD, Palso had to invest some serious time in discovering what the connection was between Xan and his little brother Lasso.

Cain looked at Sal Book and subtly raised an eyebrow. Friends? Hah. Though it had been a while since anybody had called him a friend, not that Sal’s words were true, just typical toasting rhetoric. Book still gave him a weird feeling, but he couldn’t place it. Cain would still use the word slimy, but that word could be used to identify many spacers. At this point, it seemed he had little choice but to wait and see if the Mercs would show up, and a temporary drinking buddy would be tolerable.

"To better beginnings," said Cain as he raised his glass and clanked it against Sal's and downed the whiskey. This fool better not be trying to cheat me. Cain still had his guard up. He didn't trust people, especially not people he randomly met in bars that happened to know about something he wanted to know about, but he would follow the information to where it took him. He made a mental note to keep an eye on the door.

Just as he thought that a small group walked through the front. Two human females, one humanoid male. They didn’t appear to be overly well armed, a promising sign. In places like this people tried to appear better armed in order to appear intimidating, but the Mercs did not have a reputation as thugs. They are professionals. And that’s how Cain assessed these individuals. That did not necessarily mean much. He’d keep an eye on them though, and perhaps Book would pick up on something Cain missed.

Book seemed almost familiar with the organization. The way he talked about them. The information Book spouted seemed too specific. Bar recruiting was just one give away. It had cost Cain a pretty penny to get someone to drop Taller’s name, and it took more...loathsome actions to get the information that Taller was out. Or maybe Cain’s sources just were not as reliable as he thought. No conclusive evidence, Book might have just had some former friend that was a Merc, but things still felt off.

Location: Hyperspace to Port Haven (several hours out)

Tim had claimed a cabin on the second level of the seven-level command tower, where several officers quarters had been located.

Unlike the officers’ quarters aboard the Johnny Boy, there were no card and eye-scan operated security doors and guard droids, which disconcerted him slightly, but once he had found a bed, and changed the white sheets and blankets from recently slept on, to a laundered set he found in the wood-panelled cabinet, he sat on the side of the bed to start pulling off his boots, preparing to expose the unique eco-system that were his stockinged feet, to open air.

Fire in the hole.” He joked, and then his comlink whistled for attention. He put his foot down, still shod, and picked the comlink up off the bedcovers. “Williams.

"Williams, Palso here. Where do you need me?"

Tim covered the voice-pickup with his hand so the man would not hear him sigh, then brought the comlink up. “Palso, I’m getting some rest before we hit Port Haven. Captain’s Orders. Suggest you do the same. If you are not sleeping on your freighter, there are officers’ cabins in Level CT2 of the Command Tower. Williams, out.

    Command Tower Atrium

Standing in front of the lift doors, Private Shoemaker listened to Wolf’s response.

"I haven’t spoken to Palso in hours. I don’t know where he stored them."

Shoemaker’s head dropped. That was the same response he had gotten from the other security staff that he had spoken to Did no-one know where those damn things were?

" Why don’t you ask him yourself? Wolf continued in an understandably irritated tone.

Shoemaker perked up. That was an idea. “S.O. Wolf, thank you very much for the idea.” He had Security Central, which had been set up somewhere on the ship to coordinate the various teams, patch him through to Palso’s comlink:
“Captain Palso? This is Private Shoemaker in Security. Captain Yavscout and Agent Mistry have gone to Level Four. The captain wants to know where you stored your Cryo-Guns?”

    Level Four

Exiting the turbolift, Yav led Sounil along the corridor which passed the two open blast doors of the Main and TIE Hangars on the right, then the stand-alone Atgar P-Tower laser cannon, which still had its dish-shaped barrel aimed towards the sealed double doors several dozen metres past the hangars.

Sounil observed the elf as he drew his S-5 blaster pistol from his leg holster, and prepared to tap the door controls.

    Is that really necessary?

Who knows? If there really is an Imperial device in here, it might have anti-interference capabilities.

Sounil pulled out her E-11, holding it in a double-grip and aimed into the vertical dark strip that widened as the door slid apart.

The agents, past and present, stepped through, as they took in the multi-storey sight, dominated by the spherical white shield generators.

Oooooh.” Yav cooed in awe. The place made the Nebulon-B Strident Haze' idea of Engineering look like the set of a Corellian Honey Badger (natural predator of the Corellian Sand Panther and nature documentary holo-researchers (hence why hardly anyone hears about them)). “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

Excuse me?” Sounil’s gaze swept up the gantries and steps around them.

. “This place is way too big for you and me to search on our lonesome. We’re going to need at least a security team in here.

    A security team?

He had no trouble catching the sarcasm. Anything improves with practice. “Alright, as many unassigned security personnel that you can lay your hands on.

Some engineers too? They will know what belongs, and what doesn’t.

The elf demurred. “No, I want the engineers rested, so we can get that quad-gun installed.

Sounil pulled her Jod-issued comlink. “I’ll call Central.

Yavscout glanced up at her. “And ask them about the Cryo-Guns.

What is so special about them?” She asked after him, as he stepped deeper into the vaulted chamber.

According to Palso, they can disrupt electrical energy. Could be useful if we do find anything.

Sounil holstered her carbine, and brought up the comlink. “Central, this is Mistry. We need security teams on Level Four; entrance to the forward shield generators. Wolf, Herc, Nate, whoever you’ve got. We will need portable scanners, maybe an astromech if we have one handy.” She looked at the elf, and shivered, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. Her belted Kings Army shirt was okay for the rest of the ship, but this massive space was like a fridge. “And when you can, the Captain would like an update on the Cryo-Guns hunt.

She saw Yav notice her discomfort and half turn to point a finger in her direction, a cascade of semi-transparent light blue snowflakes showering over her. She loosened her arms as she instantly felt protected from cold.

    What was that?

Endure Cold. Lasts about twenty-seven minutes. Let me know when you need a top up.

    Nice! Thank you, Yav.

    Luck's Gamble

Taab listened on dispassionately to the explanation gioven by "Two Thumbs." It's not that he didn't care about how the man had come into possession of the case full of credits, that spoke to the man's potential skillset, it was that he had already made up his mind about him. Normally he was able to use his buy'ce to hide any facial expressions that might give his emotional state away. But now, with it clipped to his belt he was forced to simply maintain the stony look on his face, and the hardness in his eyes. That proved difficult as the direction of the "interogation" continued to take shape.

"Take him in the back and lock 'em up. Then get back here."

Taab nodded in assent and grabbed Two Thumbs by the scruff of the neck, nearly dragging him back aft, a Westar-34 pointed towards his head. Taab didn't trust this man, not one bit, and was actively looking for an excuse to put a bolt through his head. But that wasn't what the Captain wanted, so Taab simply did as he was ordered to. Besides, if Taab had his way it would make a terrible mess of the cabin.

He shackled Two Thumbs to the bulkhead again, once again under the watchful eyes of Al'kesh. The Devaronian was smart, and silently raised an eyebrow at Taab. "Just watch him, same as before." Then Taab thought of what the prisoner had told he and the Skipper. He certainly didn't want him running his mouth off and telling the new crew members about fabulous riches and secret books. He reached into a pouch on his belt and withdrew a simple gag from it. It was nothing fancy, but it would get the job done. He tied it around the man's head, through his mouth, knotting it tightly enough to keep him from speaking. As he did so he whispered into Two Thumb's ear. "Even try to take this off and I will use more permanent measures to keep you silent next time." A solid thunk emitted from his gauntlet as a spring loaded blade ejected from it. "Clear?" Two Thumbs could only nod in return. Taab pushed the blade back into its concealed position with an audible click and went back to join the Captain.

"What's your thoughts Taab?

Taab took his seat, the Skipper's analysis certainly seemed sound but to him it was a useless mental excercise. "You don't want to know what I think..." Taab started, but he saw that Lasso really did, and his position as Chief of Security meant he was obligated to give it. "I don't think it matters Skip," he frowned slightly before continuing on. "He isn't telling us everything and he already threatened to kill you once. He has some obvious skills, but that just don't cut it out here, you know that. He can't be trusted"

Taab rocked back in his chair for a moment. He knew what he was about to suggest would probably be outside of the Skipper's comfort zone, but he had been asked for his opinion. "He hasn't joined us yet. I say we take the credits and kill him. Deposit his body in an easily found place with the case." He shrugged now. "The credits we can use to upgrade the Johnny Boy or spread out to the crew as a bonus." He made a show of looking back toward the aft hatch. "The book we can either keep as leverage, or plant with the body to lesson the heat on us." Taab left unsaid the fact that with Two Thumbs dead, his motivation for stealing the book and the case became irrelevant.

Taab looked back at Lasso now, their eyes meeting. He doubted that was what the Captain wanted to hear, and now he wondered what the Skipper would think of the Mandalorian's suggestion.

The fighters behind us though are still six hundred klicks out and aren’t narrowing the gap quickly. After a minute or so of radio silence, our employer comes across the secure comm.

"Okay, this is where we part ways. You should have a direct debit code access to your starfighter's computer for your payment, the payment split between both of your fighters. You download the data from your starfighters' main computer to a data-pad and can withdraw the money with the debit codes from any place in the galaxy. If you want to speak further business, I'll send you hyperspace cords to our next stop if you choose to follow us. Thanks for the assist."

My computer chirps and I just a quick test on the account. The quantum encryption on the debit codes is almost impossible to break and even harder to counterfeit. They can be spoofed, however, giving an illusion of there being money in an account, that is quickly taken away. Most credit unions and banks in the galaxy had fraud protections to prevent this from happening, but it was possible in some regions, as we once learned the hard way. I quickly connect to the holonet and run a backtrace on the codes making sure they check out and electronically debit the account for the full amount, transferring it to a joint corporate account that Trenton and I have legal rights to at the Niord Royal Credit Union back in Skadi space.

"Hey, Kinge. I thought we agreed only cash, gems, or stocks for payment. You know. Ever since that Spika job." Trenton says over the commlink. He had the same thought I did and the eighty-thousand we ate on that deal is still haunting our bottom line. It’s being investigated, but the thieves vanished into the Wolatarian free world state and getting anything done there is next to impossible, even with their recent unification.

“Yeah, I know. Can’t really do much about it. It checked though, just moved it to the account with Niord. Just waiting for them to confirm the transfer...and there it went. We got the kredits; we’re good.” I said as the computer came back with a response from the bank. I closed the banking window on my projected screen with a wave of my hand and went back to observing outside my ship.

"Contractors, Sigma Flare. Following you through. We'll work out our continued employment on the other side,” Trenton passed to the contractors who were now spooling up their hyperdrives. I guess that was confirmation he wants to follow them. I’m up for it, this was actually rather easy and we need to get the hell out of here.

The capital ship seemed to be recalling the fighters it launched, while our contractors vanished into hyperspace. I check the encrypted coordinates, but my database check comes back with no dice. The location is a valid point in space, but I have no confirmed information about where it is other than the Whendyll system in the Cademimu sector. I open up a computer script that calculates two random jump paths, with premature termination of the flight. A final third jump can then be made to the ultimate destination.

“Falling into formation, Pentacles, you have lead. Take us out,” comms Trenton.

“Roger that, advise solo jumps. Here’s the decrypted cords; we’ll take alternate jump routes with arrival at the destination set at one hour, fifty-two minutes from now,”I stated and began to spool up my hyperdrive. I notice a strange flash of light when the capital ship jumped out of the corner of my eye. It definitely used a different hyperspace or subspace jump drive, but not one I am familiar with. I finish my jump calculations and comm over to Trenton, “catch you on the flip side.”

And with that my ship launches into hyperspace. I dim the glass of the cockpit to shield myself from the disorienting blur of blue outside, and turn the glass inside into a holograph player. I’m trying to catch up on a Corellian crime drama that I’m two seasons behind in and I let the hour long episode, as I settle back in the cockpit. The ship drops out of hyperspace after ten minutes and recalculates the next jump, the process is automatic, which doesn’t interrupt the show. I’m quite engrossed in the show and don’t even mentally acknowledge the next jump termination, reorientation and return to hyperspace on the final leg towards our ultimate and mysterious destination.

Almost and hour and ten minutes after starting my final jump I exit hyperspace. I had already stopped the show about ten minutes prior, because I can tell this is leading up to a cliffhanger--the main character’s love interest was abducted by the crime bosses henchmen. Like you couldn’t have seen that one coming--and I don’t need to stop it five minutes to the end. I’ll pick it back up on our next jump, whenever that is.

The swirl of hyperspace vanishes into starlines then pinpoints of light, with an olive and azure world hanging in front of me. I guess I have arrived.

"Heads up." Rav ignored that Cain had seen them first, "You think that's them? The Mercs, I mean."

So Sal picked up on it too. He noticed Sal had shifted positions with one foot on the floor and his hand distinctly closer to his blaster. Someone is on edge. "Could be. Speak of the Sith and the Sith appear.” He paused and took a sip of whiskey. “The redhead with the poster seems to be on point for the other two. That poster could give us the information we need, or we could take a more direct approach." Cain didn't wait for Sal, and got up about to move toward the redhead.

"Oh," Cain added as an afterthought before he left the vocal range of Sal, "by the way, my last name is not Supertramp, it's Varss. I lied because, well, I do not trust random spacers in bars. Nothing personal. I just thought you should know before I tell her my name."

Cain started walking off toward the redhead, not caring if Book was on his heels. Cain could have waited for the poster to be up and for the group to move on, but Cain preferred the direct approach. He got near the redhead trying to sneak a peek at the flyer in her hand. He could not make out details. He saw the words pilot and wanted and but he could not make out more before he needed to address her; otherwise he'd look like your typical bumbling idiot trying to pick up an attractive girl.

He looked at the redhead, forcing himself not to give her the once over. Were it any other bar and not a potential employment opportunity, he probably would try to pick her up. "Hello. My name is Cain, Cain Varss, and from the brief information I gleaned from that poster," he pointed, indicating the one in her hand, "I assume you are hiring. What is the outfit?" he asked.
