Lit Star Wars: Kenobi by John Jackson Miller

I should point out that I made that comment before getting my own ARC.

 

There must be some sort of back alley where people wheel and deal these things.

Some people seem to have gotten early copies; my book store tells me to wait till 28.08. as well as to stop reading comics which I then don’t buy.

 

I gotta get this book, I MUST.

 

It's a really, really good book. Very enjoyable.

 

I had to use a few Jedi mind tricks to get my ARC, but it was well worth it. Again, great book, I suspect fans won't be disappointed.

 

I finished it. Two thumbs way, way up.

 

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is an ARC? And how do people get books early?

 

Advance reading copy. "professional reviewers" receive them to help them write reviews.

LOL, I agree. Reviewing certainly isn't my job. But that's the term used for ARCs.

 

I give you only this quote from Superman the Movie as I've been arguing with Ender_Sai about this for weeks now:

"My friends, you know me to be neither rash nor impulsive. I'm not given... to wild, unsupported statements..."

Star Wars: Kenobi is the best Star Wars novel since Darth Plagueis; very up there with the best ever and basically akin to Rango on Tatooine.

It's amazing Kenobi-work. JohnJacksonMiller surpassed all expectations with this one. Unless he objects, I'll post some out-of-context (no spoilers!) quotes to show how awesome it is...

Finished my advanced copy over the weekend.

Suffice to say, I was absolutely floored by this book. JohnJacksonMiller has an incredible grasp over Kenobi's character and it shows. It's got a tidy little contained scope that really puts the focus on the characters more than the Big Events, which is a welcome change of pace. If nothing else, this book should be the model of how to write inter-trilogy material.

It's easily one of the five best EU books released in the last decade and is one of those great books that makes the films better.

Someone above asked my feelings on spoilers. My Facebook followers know how I feel about spoilers in my personal viewing life: I've hidden huge swaths of my feed to preserve surprises for the summer film season. No movie reveal, no line of dialogue, no funny bit has ever been made better by its presentation in a 140-character tweet. Of course, that's on sites where there's no mechanism to hide spoilers; here, it's a bit different, because you do have that mechanism, and you also have rules for policing it.

That said, the ARCs are released for reviewers with the written proviso that all reviews should appear after the release date, and while I don't think anybody minds the commentary that appears early (and I've appreciated all the kind words) it's probably fairer to the folks who don't get ARCs to hold off on more detailed spoilers. (The spoiler button's too much of a temptation even for me sometimes!) The other thing is that changes are always made to the text after the ARC, so you may be quoting a line that's been altered. There haven't been many at all in this case, but there have been some.

This is just my personal take -- I know the publisher and Netgalley provide their own advice. Again, I really do appreciate the enthusiasm for this book -- it's great to see!

 

What JohnJacksonMiller said. As a reader, I implore you to stay away from Kenobi spoilers. Trust me.

 

Easier said than done.
