I just stumbled across a nifty peice of allegory in ESB.

Darth Vader lops of lukes hand and in the process Luke also loses Anakins legacy lightsabre.

Luke has always thought of his father as being dead - however now at the point of this revelation he has a father and loses the object that was symbolic of a lie told to him by obi-wan.

The finding of darth vader as his father contrasts well to the loss of his hand and his innocence the latter also symbolised by the legacy sabre. This all ties in well with the loss on anakins hand in ATOC - in losing his hand and it being replaced with a cybernetic hand he his now very much his fathers son....

    # Does anyone know of any more metaphors visual or otherwise #

To dispel dispute about the presence of poetic and visual metaphors - im sure these films are loaded with them and refuse to accept that there is nothing in it accept he just chops of his hand and thats it - even on a subconsious level lucas was endowing this scene with meanin when he wrote it. The interpretation is fair to dispute. The fact that some peopple will say that these films are for children is inacceptable they have a far wider audience- all films are rife with countless hidden meanings

Actually heres another basic (probably flippant) one.

Han Solo the embodyment of the american hero, the space cowboy - pilots a ship whose shape was inspired by a hamburger with a bite taken out of it.

GL knew what HS embodied and the idea of this guy flying a faster than light burger obviously appealed to him on differant levels

Or very simple - Leia and luke dressed in white - purity and innocence.

also hoth the white coloured ice planet is another good eexample

Anakins clothes in AOTC are made of leather and are a LOT darker than other jedi robes.
This symbolises the darkness within him..................................................................*tumble weed blows past* bloomin' rolling plant! *lops tumbleweed in half with saber*
