I've never really seen the SE specifically. I've only seen the OOT and the Blu-Ray versions. Most of the changes range from "okay" to "wow, I'm glad they did that to me." None of them are "Lucas ruined my childhood" bad.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Jedi Rocks except for the name, though it's never mentioned in the film so it doesn't really matter. The only change that kinda irks me is adding a rock to where R2 is when Obi-Wan's looking at Luke. The rock just randomly disappears when R2 gets out. But the good thing is I didn't notice that happened until it was pointed out to me in a video so it's still not that bad.

I know this kinda sounds weird but I always look forward to seeing what the new changes are going to be in the next editions. I always like improving upon things (*gasp* the OT can be improved upon?!) but now since Disney's in control, they probably won't do that anymore. The 2011 versions will probably be the last of the changes. Darn.

6 Ways the Star Wars Special Editions Actually Improved The Original Trilogy

The Star Wars saga has been nipped and tucked at for years by its maker, but to fans, the words “Special Editions” are uttered like venom—a perversion of iconic films. But with recent rumors of plans to finally release the theatrical cuts, we thought we’d take a look back at what Lucas changed, and how some of these changes actually made Star Wars better.
“A movie is never finished, only abandoned”—that’s the quote (liberally adapted from Leonardo da Vinci) that drove George Lucas in 1997to spend just as much money remastering Star Wars: A New Hope as he did filming it 20 years prior. It’s something that the filmmaker had been doing to Star Wars since 1981, all the way up to the 2011 Blu-Ray releases.
While it’s easy (far too easy) to point out many egregious edits that have given Lucas and the Special Editions such a foul reputation among diehard Star Warsfans—Greedo infamously shooting before Han did, inserting Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost over Sebastian Shaw, the list goes on and on and on—among the vitriol it’s easy to forget that some of the changes made to A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi aided, rather than maligned, the Star Wars saga.
6) Crediting James Earl Jones

It would not be an unpopular opinion to say that Darth Vader is the best, most iconic science fiction villains of all time. There’s many factors that make him such a remarkable and memorable bad guy, but the one that stands above all is the fantastic vocal performance James Earl Jones provided for the character. Vader’s voice is embedded in the hearts and minds of millions, the cadence of every quote, the mechanical breathing, the booming presence. But originally, Jones wasn’t included in the credits for the films.
Why? There’s conflicting reports—a fear of being typecast, for one—but it was Jones himself that requested his name not be included at first. Speaking to Pop Matters in 2008, the actor said it was because he originally did not think that his performance mattered, as it was just another special effect:

When Linda Blair did the girl in “The Exorcist,” they hired Mercedes McCambridge to do the voice of the devil coming out of her. And there was controversy as to whether Mercedes should get credit. I was one who thought no, she was just special effects. (Note: The Screen Actors Guild helped her eventually receive credit for her work.)
So when it came to Darth Vader, I said, no I’m just special effects. But it became so identified that by the third one, I thought, OK I’ve been denying it, I’ve been saying it sounds like the (7-Up soft drink) Uncola nut guy Holder. Geoffrey Holder! ... and I got away with it.
Jones eventually relinquished the idea that somehow his voice played no major part in turning Vader into one of the most formidable villains of all time, but it wasn’t until the 1997 Special Editions that he was officially credited as the voice of Darth Vader. Minor in the grand scheme of the changes made to the films, and with no impact on the stories themselves, but still an important change: recognition of one of the most famous vocal performances in movie history.
5) Fixing the Emperor

When Empire Strikes Back released, Ian McDiarmid had yet to be cast as Emperor Palpatine, and make-up for the character was far from being designed. So when Vader communicates to his master about the potential to turn Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side, the figure we see (played by Elaine Baker, wife of make-up artist Rick Baker, and voiced by Clive Revill) looks radically different to the Emperor of Return of the Jedi... and honestly, it’s not the best prosthetic work in the first place, and it definitely doesn’t hold up today.
So during principal photography for Revenge of the Sith, McDiarmid was asked to reshoot the scene to provide visual continuity—and while his makeup for Palpatine in the prequels was a bit different than his original Jedi appearance, it looks a lot better than the original, and makes a lot more sense to see McDiarmid’s Palpatine communing with Vader. On the downside, the dialogue changes made in the scene to obliquely reference Anakin Skywalker are a bit less defensible.
4) Adding Biggs Back In

In the original cut of A New Hope, Biggs Darklighter, Luke’s best-friend-turned-Rebel-pilot, is barely seen. He makes a minor appearance during the Battle of Yavin sequence before his death, and yet it’s meant to be treated as something tragic—two close friends briefly united before being cruelly torn apart in battle. It doesn’t exactly work when the first time we actually see Biggs is during the actual battle, outside of a few mentions by Luke earlier in the movie.
The Special Edition added back in a cut scene of Luke and Biggs’ reunion, and its presence at least gives us a sense of their relationship before Darklighter’s untimely death, adds a bit more humanity to the tragedy rather than “oh right,that guy.” It makes Biggs’ death sting a little more, another ratchet of tension to the battle across the Death Star. Although Biggs’ other deleted scene has never made it back into the films, perhaps for good reasons, it was nice to actually see a bit more of the friend that meant so much to Luke.

I know your pitchforks are already raised in anger at the mere thought of me defending the Special Editions in the first place, but don’t raise them higher just yet: I’m not about to defend the removal of the original (and much better) band song “Lapti Nek,” which is outstandingly funky, in favor of “Jedi Rocks,” a far inferior song that feels out of place with the soundscape of the original movies. I am, however, going to actually defend the additions made in regards to poor slave dancer Oola’s death-by-Rancor in the scene, because it does a much better job in terms of teasing a monster than other changes made for the Special Editions.
One of the few changes made to Empire Strikes Back was to show a lot more of the Wampa in the scene where Luke escapes its cave. But in showing off that the new monster, much of the tension of the moment is lost entirely: in the original cut, the Wampa is heavily obscured and barely seen (mainly because Lucas was not pleased with its appearance). It allowed the audience to fill in the fear with their imagination, aided only by roars and snarls and the briefest of snippets. In the Special Edition version, we laboriously see the Wampa chomp away at Luke’s Tauntaun, the fear and tension gone altogether.
In the original Return of the Jedi cut, all we hear of Oola’s death is her scream from above while Jabba and his cohorts look on. The Special Edition shows a little bit more as she tumbles into the Rancor pit—but unlike the changes to the Wampa cave scene in Empire, it’s shot in such a way to obscure the Rancor: you see Oola look up at the bloodthirsty crowd, the briefest shot of the pit door raising, her look of absolute terror, and then cut to the scream. It keeps the grand reveal for Luke’s fight against the creature, but it sets your imagination alight. It’s bizarre that the Wampa was handled so differently, as so much worse, in comparison.
Also, fun fact: Femi Taylor, who originally played Oola in Return of the Jedi, reprised the role 15 years later for the additional footage, wearing the same outfit she wore in 1982. There’s barely a difference in her appearance between the old and new sequences: producers were shocked that Taylor’s impressive dancing career had kept her from visually aging all that much in a decade and a half.
2) The Battle of Yavin

The practical model work in the original Star Wars films was like nothing anyone had seen at the time, an industry-defining evolution of effects work. But if you go back the original sequence of X-Wings dueling with TIE Fighters, the scenes might not be quite as visually arresting as you remember, or even as arresting as the battles on Hoth and Endor.
Sparingly and with much faith to the original shots used in the film, CGI recreations of the original model sequences were made, but the fighters moved a little speedier, twisted and turned a little tighter. There was something slow and graceful about the original shots, but they didn’t quite match up with the intensity of the scene (or even the targeting computer shots we’re constantly shown, where X-Wing and TIE graphics vividly sweep and swing in and out of firing range). The CGI versions at least match up a little more in terms of intensity, while staying faithful to the shots and action shown in the theatrical cut.
And the thing is, the changes made aren’t even just for the sake of the fact they could be done in CGI: it was to bring A New Hope up to the standard of its sequels. Outside of minor cleanups of matte boxes where green and blue screen work was noticeable, the much more intricate spaceship action scenes inEmpire and Jedi were barely touched in the Special Editions, a testament to the incredible quality of the model work done by ILM with the advances in technology at the time. Would it have been nice to see them done with models rather than CG? Sure. But at least the CG was used to recapture the intended spirit of the original scene, not just done for the sake it being the hot new technology.
1) Your First Step Into A Larger World

Star Wars is meant to be a sweeping, epic sci-fi saga about a galaxy in peril, but in the original cuts, our view of that galaxy was surprisingly insular and small-scale. Outside of the grandiose battle sequences, we largely stick to a small group of characters, and barely get to see any of the people of the Star Wars universe in the background. The Special Editions made a few changes that improved that, and it helps sell the scope of the saga a little more.
The original entrance to Mos Eisley is given a huge panning shot to show the massive scope of the town (what was meant to be a small spaceport in the grand scheme of things) that we otherwise never saw much of beyond the confines of the Cantina and the Falcon’s docking bay. Cloud City gets an equally sweeping panning shot when the Falcon arrives, and windows depicting the hustle and bustle of the city outside are added (rectifying Director Irvin Kershner’s original complaint about the set being too insular and closed off). When Lando addresses the people of Cloud City to begin evacuation, originally we didn’t see anyone: in the Special Editions you get to see the crowds milling around, and it makes it seem much more alive in the process.
It’s further improved by the addition of the celebratory scenes on Tatooine, Cloud City, and Coruscant at the end of Return of the Jedi (although the 2004 addition of Naboo to that montage jars, solely because it looks out of place aesthetically—Theed hasn’t changed at all in the nearly four decades betweenPhantom Menace and Jedi). These shots help to emphasize the grand scale of what the Rebels were actually fighting for, that there’s this whole galaxy of billions and billions of people out there. It is the “larger world” Obi-Wan tells Luke about, and while the panning shots aren’t exactly the most drastic addition to the films, they do help an awful lot in fleshing out the galaxy far, far away a bit more.

I like the addition of the Luke and Biggs on Yavin scene, some of the updates to the Battle of Yavin, seeing Cloud City when Lando is tells people to evacuate, and the 97 ending (more planets and new music, but still Shaw as Anakin's ghost).

Since the original film hit theaters back in 1977, the Star Wars saga has seen more than its fair share of updates and revisions. Often, fans have ranted about George Lucas’s consistent tampering with their childhood classics, with the most famous and egregious change being the “Han shot first” debacle. However, some of the changes made to the films were ultimately wise decisions that added continuity, depth, and new meaning to the story. Here are seven examples.
1. Yoda goes CGI in The Phantom Menace

When fans caught their first glimpse of The Phantom Menace, one questionable element that stood out was an awkward new puppet version of Jedi Master Yoda. The character had been done brilliantly by Frank Oz in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but this updated incarnation was such a drastic departure from the design that fans remembered. Thankfully, the 2011 Blu-ray of the film replaced it with the prequels’ CGI model.

2. Jango’s busted jetpack

Attack of the Clones is perhaps one of the saga’s least popular installments, but one thing it does right is establish bounty hunter Jango Fett as a certified badass. The fact that the elder Fett falls to Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber, however, detracts somewhat from his power. After all, Jango had already stood toe-to-toe with Obi-Wan Kenobi. On the film’s DVD release, Lucas decided to add sparks to Jango’s battle-damaged jetpack in the moments leading up to his death, establishing that the bounty hunter couldn’t escape as he had earlier on Kamino.

3. Luke and Biggs briefly catch up

Two deleted scenes were added to the 1997 special edition of A New Hope: a pointless, repetitive confrontation between Han Solo and Jabba the Hutt and this brief moment in which Luke Skywalker reunites with his friend Biggs Darklighter. The scene, albeit short, nicely pays off Luke’s sunset-gazing dream to join the Rebel Alliance earlier in the film and sets the emotional stakes for Biggs’ death during the subsequent battle against the Death Star.

4. The real Palpatine joins The Empire Strikes Back

Ian McDiarmid played the ultra-creepy Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi and later on served as one of the highlights of the prequel trilogy. Still, Lucas didn’t replace the original character in The Empire Strikes Back – played by Elaine Baker with super-imposed chimpanzee eyes and voiced by Clive Revill — with a proper appearance by McDiarmid until the 2004 DVD release. Even more intriguing is the revised dialogue between Palpatine and Vader, which implies that both men are less than honest with each other regarding their intentions for Luke. Shifty Sith.

5. Temuera Morrison takes over for Boba Fett

Boba Fett was a fan-favorite for decades before he was revealed to actually be a clone. So when it came time for the original trilogy’s 2004 DVDs, it made sense for actor Temuera Morrison — who played Jango Fett and various clones in the prequels — to return to the franchise as the new voice of Boba Fett, the cloned version of his original character. Luckily, Morrison has a fitting voice, allowing the continuity fix to help rather than hinder the classic films.

6. Farewell to Anakin’s eyebrows

Much like Jango’s jetpack, this is a small detail that casual viewers would likely never notice. However, in recent versions of Return of the Jedi, Lucas and his team have digitally removed the dying Anakin’s eyebrows to match the damage he endures in Revenge of the Sith. Of course, the update also involved altering actor Sebastian Shaw’s eye color and face to more closely match Hayden Christensen, a move that proved far more divisive among fans.

7. Star Wars celebration

The demise of Emperor Palpatine and the destruction of the second Death Star marked the culmination of a story that had been brewing throughout six movies. So in the 1997 special edition of Return of the Jedi, Lucas and company made sure to include glimpses at celebrations on the planets featured most prominently in the prequels. Some fans may prefer that locales like Naboo and Coruscant stay out of the original trilogy, but the footage conveys the weight of the Rebel Alliance’s victory, demonstrating that the entire galaxy rejoiced its new-found freedom.

There used to be people who watched the original scene and concluded that Vader was simply executing his previously stated plan of overthrowing and replacing the Emperor as ruler of the galaxy. In fact, during story meetings, Lawrence Kasdan voiced concerns that people might misconstrue the scene that way. Lucas's solution was to make it clear in the unmasking scene what Vader's true motivations were in killing the Emperor. But that would mean that, for some people, the emotional power of the scene where Vader kills the Emperor would be compromised, because Vader's motivations wouldn't be clear to them in the moment, but only retroactively. The new scene leaves no doubt as to Vader's emotional state when he turns on the Emperor: he's passionately objecting to the Emperor's torture and attempted murder of his son.

Wha..? Never heard anyone who saw that scene that way.
As an eight year old, watching the film for the first time, the real meaning of the scene was obvious to me!
The "no" is not necessary, but only serves as totally meaningless exposition in a scene that was previously executed with perfection.

Anyway, I like a lot of the changes in the different versions. I like the bigger Mos Eisley, and the Jabba scene in ANH. I love the Wampa in TESB, and the larger view of Cloud City. Some changes to Jabba's palace were neat (like Oola's death). The galaxy-wide celebration and the new song at the end of ROTJ is magnificent! I don't mind Hayden either TBH.

Didn't see a thread like this but would be happy to have this merged into one if it exists:

I think the special editions get a lot of undeserved hate. They were my introduction to Star Wars so that's probably why I'm biased towards them but I love that they freshened up the old visuals, added scenes with our faves from the OT, added a bunch of modern touches and brought the OT back to theaters.

Does anyone know if the SEs are the ones played at theaters when they do marathons? I would love to see the 2011 versions on the big screen.

Honestly none of the SE changes really bother me other than

- Greedo shooting at all in ANH (regardless of how stupid it is... it's just looks AWFUL... the Han head bob looks so fake and un-natural)
- Jabba being shown in ANH
- Jedi Rocks in ROTJ
- Vader Nooo in ROTJ

All the rest of the changes are neutral at worst and many of them are actually quite good

I've never seen The Empire Strikes Back on Blu-ray. For those who own or have seen both the Blu-ray and DVD versions, is it worth it to pick up a Blu-ray copy if I already have the DVD? I have a Blu-ray player that upscales DVDs to near-HD quality? Is there a dramatic difference in visual quality between the Blu-ray and DVD versions?

unfortunately there are differences in color timing and other things in the blu rays/digital release that many don't like. i'm fine with my dvds and in the future will probably get the digital hd versions if they come down in price. check out these vids,

Yeah it's actually kind of embarrassing how poor the color is on some of the Blu-Ray releases... and honestly some of the restorations just look bad.

Great comparisons - Thanks for posting these. The OT SE's are almost 20 years old at this point (released from January - March 1997), and I think those fans who weren't around when they were released may not remember how much of an improvement these were over the originals re: the prints themselves, in addition to at least some of the improvements/additions.

I also agree that these SE releases paved the way for the DVD's & the later High-def (HD) Blu-rays. Lflm. did a lot of work cleaning up these prints for the SE release - which looked & sounded amazing on the big screen.

WOW! Thanks a lot for these cleaned up original version elements!

And something interesting I noticed. So the SE has Yavin IV in the background and the camera pan to the left reveals the approaching Death Star. According to the SE the Death Star could have then shot at Yavin IV before the fighters even arrived.

Jedi Rocks was always pretty catchy to me but I like Lapti Nek better. I agree with DBPirate . None of them ruin my childhood at all. Sure, there are things that were questionable of course and some that I don't like at all, like the CGI blob walking in front of the speeder when Obi-Wan and Luke pull up to the Stormtroopers (ugh it's annoying but it's only a second of the movie) but there are good SE changes like the x-wings in Ep. 4 and there are bad ones throughout.

I don't think so, it's a rather straight camera pan from the right to the left that doesn't take a longer and curved flight path, add to this that Yavin IV is much further away than just 1 1/5 Yavin IV diameters. Judging by the speed of the Death Star when it entered the Yavin system it must have moved with a speed of several miles each second (since it has a diameter of 100 miles).

The SE clearly reduced the safe distance between Yavin IV and the approaching Death Star to almost "Zero".

This was eventually retconned to 120 km - which has carried forth into the newcanon with Ultimate Star Wars and Star Wars Absolutely Everything You Need To Know.

You do know how I feel about that retcon (where is the research basis?) and prefer to trust the 100+ miles figure the ILM model builders provided which coincidentally matches my own findings.

("The Death Star particle beam that just destroyed our base...").

Probably came from the ROTJ sketchbook showing DS2 as 160km, ROTJ novel saying it was "nearly twice as big" - and 120 km being the maximum that could be justified using those two factors.

Maybe the pan is not 180 degrees but more like 120? Thus enabling the Death Star to still be well behind the Yavin gas giant.
