Wow guys!! Thanks for the warm reception! I was certain rotten eggs and veggies were going to be thrown. lol

I'm finishing up NaNo so there will be a few more really fast updates and after NaNo ends on the 30th of Nov my posting will go back to "normal" for me--a post every couple days, if I can swing it. I REALLY want to finish this before I become employed or pregnant again (HAHA!).

I'll start doing individual comments after the next chapter so please keep posting what you think! It's an amazing balm--knowing that others like your work! I must say, though, that this is the most ambitious story I've attempted yet!

    Glad to be back!!

    Chapter Sixteen

Space slowed and stilled as the Imperial fleet came out of lightspeed near the Rebel?s new base. Almost immediately sensors lit up and the Imperial officers tapped into comm chatter.

All of it was about evacuation. They did not have the element of surprise.

Admiral Ozzel felt his heart sink into his stomach. This did not bode well for him. He turned to his general and instructed the man to tell the Emperor?s Hand that they had arrived.

General Veers strode smartly to the forward executive office where the Emperor?s Hand had stationed herself since being assigned to this mission. He buzzed in to alert her to his presence?as if she did not already know he stood there. She possessed the same odd voodoo as the Emperor himself.

The door opened quietly, allowing him to enter. General Veers walked in and halted in the threshold. The room was dark and lit only by the light of the distant sun and stars. The general could barely make out the outline of the Hand as she stood in front of the viewport, her hands clasped loosely behind her.

?My lady, the fleet has moved out of lightspeed,? General Veers informed her. ?ComScan has detected an energy field protecting an area of the sixth planet of the Hoth system. The field is strong enough to deflect any bombardment.?

The Hand turned slowly to face him, her eyes cold, her mouth set in a thin line. ?The Rebels are alerted to our presence,? she mused. She paused, then met his gaze. ?Admiral Ozzel came out of lightspeed too close to the system.? She flexed her black gloved hand.

General Veers stiffened in fear. ?He?he thought surprise was wiser??

Green eyes cut him off. ?He is as clumsy as he is stupid!? she snarled. After a moment, she had regained her composure. ?General, prepare your troops for a surface attack.?

He swallowed. ?Yes?my lady.? Then he hurried away as fast as his legs would carry him.

The Emperor?s Hand thought a moment, then reached out and used the Force to switch on her screen to the command center of the Star Destroyer. Nearly immediately she was greeted with the sight of Admiral Ozzel and Captain Piett talking over logistics.
Admiral Ozzel noticed her first. ?Ah! Lady Jade! The fleet has moved out of lightspeed and we are preparing to?? He was cut off as the Emperor?s Hand closed her fist. His eyes got wide and he had difficulty breathing.

Mara Jade kept her voice even. ?You have failed my master for the last time, Admiral.? Her green eyes flicked to the younger man standing there trying very hard not to look at his choking superior. ?Captain Piett??

?Yes, my lady?? he answered promptly.

?Make ready to land my master?s troops beyond the Rebel?s energy field and deploy the fleet so that nothing makes it out of the system,? she told him. She twisted her closed fist slightly and Admiral Ozzel fell, dead, to the floor of the command center.? She raised a finger slightly. ?You are in command now, Admiral Piett.?

Piett ignored the body at his feet. ?Thank you, Lady Jade.?

Leia was in her element. Surrounded by the fighters of the Rebellion and also numerous crew, she prepped them for the upcoming fight. ?All troop carriers will assemble at the north entrance,? she instructed. ?The heavy transport ships will leave as soon as they are loaded. Only two fighter escorts per ship. The energy shield can only be opened for a short time, so you?ll have to stay very close to your transports.?

?Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?? a very young, new recruit asked with skepticism.

Leia speared him with her gaze but did not detour from her pep talk. ?The ion cannon will fire several shots to make sure that any enemy ships will be out of your flight path. When you?ve gotten past the energy shield, proceed directly to the rendezvous point at Sullust. Understood??

Heads nodded around her and male voices echoed their affirmatives.

    She nodded. ?Good luck.?

As the men went to get into their ships, she made her way back to the command ce

    Chapter Seventeen

Han was furious. He ran through the corridors until he came to the command center. An explosion caused him to lose his footing in the door and he stumbled into the center.

    ?Are you okay?? he demanded.

Leia turned from the readout she was looking at and glared at him. ?Why are you still here??

?Heard the command center had been hit,? he bit out as he tried to make his way to her. He had to step over pieces of equipment and rubble.

Leia turned away from him and clipped, ?You?ve got your clearance to leave!?

His anger was nearly at a boiling point. ?Don?t worry; I?ll leave! First I?m gonna get you to your ship.? After he climbed over a large piece of ceiling, he spotted Anakin Skywalker standing in a dark corner. ?Make your daughter leave!?

Leia brushed past Han and ignored her father completely. ?Send all troops in Sector 12 to the south slope to protect the fighters!?

Anakin shrugged at Han. ?She?s too much like her mother. Trust me?you can?t make her do anything.?

There was a direct hit on the command center. Pieces blew up, fire spurted from the wiring in the walls, and Threepio lost his balance. Han caught the heavy droid and pushed him the opposite direction.

Over the comm they heard, ?Imperial troops have entered the base! Imperial troops have entered?? then static.

Han stomped over to Leia and laid a couple of fingers on her arm. In a softer tone than he had used earlier, he said, ?Come on. That?s it.?

Leia searched his face and saw only worry for her there. She turned to the comm officer. ?Give the evacuation code signal.? Han began to lead her away from the officers. ?And get to your transports!?

Then Han, Leia, Anakin and Threepio raced down the corridor to try to make it to the Millennium Falcon.

This was suicide, but Luke felt very alive as he raced toward an AT-AT. He gauged the distance and took his grappling hook, aimed it at the underside of the transport, and hit his target square on. He rappelled up the line, hovering in the air for a few minutes as he took his lightsaber off his belt and slashed an opening in the armor. Replacing his lightsaber, he then took a thermal detonator and tossed it inside. He released his grappling hook and dropped to the snow.

It was very satisfying to watch the AT-AT implode from the inside out.

Grinning like a teenager again, Luke then raced off to find his X-wing.

Han and Anakin ran at full speed down the corridors with Leia between them. Both men were determined to get her out of harm?s way and were willing to work together in order to succeed. A particularly large blast slammed into Echo Base, causing nearly everyone to lose their footing. Leia had barely gotten back to her feet when Anakin, prompted by the Force, tackled her and pushed her further back into the hall. A few nanoseconds later, the ceiling where she had been standing collapsed?right on top of Anakin.

?Skywalker!? Han barked, dusting snow out of his hair and trying to clear his ears from the tumult. ?Skywalker, can you hear me??

On the other side of the pile of large icy blocks mixed with transparisteel, Leia dazedly climbed to her feet once again and faced the blocked passage. It dawned on her that her father might have just given his life for hers?and she had been denying his existence. Using all her strength, Leia pushed on the collapsed pile, but it was unmovable.

Dimly, she could make out Han shouting, so she assumed he was okay. She searched around her, trying to find anything that she could use as leverage to try to help unbury her father. Everything was either stuck in the ice or too heavy for her to lift. Eyes wide, she faced the pile again.

?Father!? she called. ?Father, hear me! Father!?

Then she noticed that the topmost piece of rubble seemed to be vibrating. She took a step back, eyes riveted to the sight. As she watched, the piece of rubble lifted slowly into the air and settled almost gently against the wall several feet away. Slowly, one

    Lady- Nah, he's okay. :}

Ratna- Hey! Long time no see, right? :} Well to summarize the last two years: bed rest for 2 months, early C-section, baby's fine (and turns 2 in 7 days!!), got a better job, lost the job before the 90 days, unemployed, moved back to GA to live with my parents (My husband is THRILLED about that, let me tell you!). And the last six months? Lost my grandmother (whom I was extremely close to) very suddenly on Mother's Day, and my grandfather (my dad's step-dad who kindof adopted all of us and was an amazing guy) died and was buried yesterday. The holidays are rough this year. To be honest, I feel very lost right now, but writing helps give me something to focus on.

    More to come!!

    Chapter Eighteen

Han was draped over support struts, trying to desperately fix whatever was wrong with his hyperdrive. Unfortunately, he didn?t know what that was.

?Horizontal boosters!? he called to Chewie to try.

Chewie attempted to turn them on but nothing happened. He told Han to try something else.

Han glanced around and dropped further into the bulkhead to twist a different part. ?Alluvial dampers??

Chewie didn?t see that anything was wrong with the dampers and told Han so.

When Han tried to reach a different level, he hit his head on a panel that he had pulled open earlier. ?That?s not it?Bring me the hydrospanner!?

Glancing around, the Wookie found the desired tool and brought it quickly to Han. Han popped out of the bulkhead long enough to take the hydrospanner and murmur to Chewbacca, ?I don?t know how we?re gonna get out of this one??

He had just gone back into the bulkhead when the ship was rocked by a large impact. At first he thought it was another Star Destroyer, but knew Luke was out there and would have alerted him. Then the ship was rocked again.

?Wait?that wasn?t a laser blast. Something hit us!?

Chewie agreed with him and began returning to the cockpit as Han tried to extract himself from his ship.

?Han! Get up here!? Leia ordered over the comm.

Han ran back to his cockpit and saw the answer even as Leia said it.

Luke?s voice crackled over the line. ?I can?t take too many more hits in my X-wing. We need a plan.?

?Well,? Anakin spoke up finally. ?We go back?we say hello to Imperial holding cells. We go forward?we could either die, or we could weave a way through this mess and come out the other side.?

Han didn?t need much time to think about it. ?Chewie, set two-seven-one.?

Leia nearly panicked. ?What are you doing? You?re not actually going into an asteroid field??

?They?d be crazy to follow us, wouldn?t they?? he reasoned with her.

?He?s right, Leia,? Luke said. ?This is our best choice.?

Han barely heard the kid as he focused on avoiding running into asteroids. He slowly sped the Falcon up to an insane speed.

?You don?t have to do this to impress me!? Leia protested, sounding slightly out of breath.

Threepio was about to have a meltdown. ?Sir! The possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately three thousand seven hundred twenty to one!?

?Never tell me the odds,? Han quipped as he stared at the rocks shooting past them. Smaller ones hit the Falcon, denting and scratching her, but he was able to make it past the ones that would vaporize them. To his left, he could see Luke doing the same in his smaller X-wing.

As if flying through an asteroid field wasn?t hard enough, four TIE-fighters showed up on his screen.

    ?Luke?? Han bit out.

?I?ve got them,? Luke said as the X-wing dropped behind the larger ship. ?Keep flying. After today, I?ll only owe you one.?

Han saw Anakin lay a restraining hand on his daughter?s arm when she would have stood up to protest Luke doing such a dangerous and risky maneuver. Reluctantly she sat back down.

Luke carefully trailed the four TIE-fighters, keeping asteroids between him and them as much as possible. The large mass of the floating asteroids would hide him from their sensors. If they all four turned on him at once, he wasn?t sure even his flying skills could get him out alive.

A TIE-fighter straggling a bit behind the others turned to get a better view of the Falcon?and was smashed into a fireball as an asteroid hit it.

    ?Down to three??

Luke then turned his attention to the farthest port TIE. His fingers rested on his control stick as he waited?waited?then fired at just the corner of the TIE?s wing. It was enough to send the TIE in a spin; which, when not in an asteroid field, would not have taken it out of the fight for long, yet in the field spun it into an asteroid.

    ?Then there were two.?

He hoped his efforts were not in vain and

A/N: Oh guys, life truly does not ask what you want it to do for you and so goes on to do what it wants...

I've had every intention of posting more reguarly (I even have several chapters finished ahead of time) but things just seem to go from bad to worse with us. We had to move again (this time in with my in-laws). We have smaller space and less privacy than before. I've had to start physical therapy, which takes up a lot of my time. The other portion of my time I confess is spent on Facebook and World of Warcraft. The few times my writing muse strikes, I channel it into my blog.

    Until tonight.

The local old movie theater runs older movies. Tonight was...ironically...Empire Strikes Back. I came back rejuvenated and ready to write!

    So write I shall!!

Look for more posts to appear in the next few weeks!

    Chapter Nineteen

Leia was musing over her conflicted feelings a few hours later. Once again she was in the Falcon?s cockpit, but this time she was definitely alone. All the men were busy finishing up various repairs around the ship.

At least Luke hadn?t said anything to her about the kiss he had witnessed, though she didn?t know if he had talked to Han once she had left. Han seemed to be in one piece, so her brother must approve of her being with a smuggler.

    A smuggler!

She was a Princess of Alderaan and she was attracted--out of all the men she had known--to a scoundrel who cheated at cards and had bounty hunters after him! What was wrong with her?

    Something flew past the viewport.

Leia frowned and leaned forward in her chair as she tried to see into the darkness of the tunnel. She held her breath and squinted as she peered into the black.

A brown flying creature smacked into the viewport right in front of her. All she could really make out of it was a huge mouth and lots of slimy mucus.

She couldn?t help it?she screamed and ran out of the cockpit. In no time at all she found Han, Luke, Anakin and Threepio grouped around Chewbacca. As usual, Han and Threepio were bickering.

?There?s something out there!? she blurted.

    Every face turned to her.

    ?Where?? Anakin asked.

    ?Outside. In the cave.?

As if to punctuate her words, they heard something thud into the ship.

?There it is!? Threepio panicked. ?Listen! Listen!?

Han took a protective covering from his face and looked up. ?I?m going out there.? He tossed his tools down and started leaving the room.

?Are you crazy?!? Leia asked, then mentally kicked herself. Why did she care?

Anakin and Luke shared a smirk that she ignored.

Han, meanwhile, was striding toward the ramp. ?Han!?

?I just got this bucket of bolts back together,? he tossed over his shoulder. ?I?m not going to let something tear it apart.?

Leia groaned and grabbed a breather. ?Then I?m going with you!?

?Us, too,? Luke said from behind her.

Threepio stood inside the ship. ?I think it might be better if I stay behind and guard the ship.?

Han led the way down the ramp into the dark, moist tunnel. Cautiously he stepped onto the ground, expecting to feel hard stone under his boots. Instead, the ground gave under his weight like a spring. A very wet, squishy spring.

?This ground sure feels strange,? Leia remarked as she followed him. ?It doesn?t feel like rock.?

?There?s an awful lot of moisture in here,? Han mused as he slowly walked away from the Falcon.

?It was like this before,? came Luke?s reply. ?I explored around here a little ways, but it?s like this everywhere I went.?

Leia shook her head as she looked around. ?I don?t know,? she said slowly. ?I?ve got a bad feeling about this.?

Both Skywalker men swiveled around to look at her.

    She shrugged.

?Watch out!? Han suddenly shouted as he fired his blaster at something really close to the ship. A blur dropped to the ground with a shriek. The group rushed up to it.

    ?Yeah, that?s what I thought??

?A mynock,? Anakin finished for him. ?Nasty little things, but pretty harmless to humanoids. They?re more of a nuisance than anything else.?

?Chewie,? Han called to his partner, ?check the rest of the ship and make sure there are no more attached, chewing on the power cables.?

Leia backed away from the disgusting looking creature. ?Mynocks??

?Go on inside,? Han told her. ?We?ll clean them off if there are any more.?

She was nearly to the ramp when several mynocks flew at her. She yelled in fright and dashed toward the ship. Chewie roared at the flying pests and shot his crossbow at a few.

When a crossbow bolt hit the ceiling of the tunnel, there was a deep, rumbling roar that filled the air and the entire ground shifted. Everyone stumbled around briefly, but quickly regained their balances when the ground stilled.

?Wait a minute?? Han breathed. He narrowed his eyes at the gro

    Chapter Twenty

Captain Needa?s body fell to the floor at Mara?s feet. She smiled coldly at his unresponsive face.

?Apology accepted, Captain Needa,? she purred.

She hadn?t killed the captain because her prey had gotten away. Quite the contrary since her plan involved forcing the two ships to travel to Cloud City where she waited. She had sensed inside of him honor and the willingness to do the greater good for others?two traits that she did not need clouding the minds of her officers. Those kinds of thoughts led to deserters who joined the Rebellion against her master.

No, that she did not need at all.

?Captain Solo! This time you have gone too far!? Threepio fretted while in the cockpit of the Falcon.

Chewbacca glanced at the droid and howled something at him.

?No I will not be quiet, Chewbacca! Why doesn?t anyone listen to me??

Han pointed at the Imperial ships that were starting to move away from each other.

?The fleet?s starting to break up,? he observed. ?Go back and stand by the manual release for the landing claw.?

    Chewie nodded and quickly left.

?I really don?t see how that is going to help!? Threepio bemoaned. ?Surrender is a perfectly acceptable alternative in extreme circumstances. I?m sure the Empire will be gracious enough to?? He stopped and slumped into his head, deactivated.

Han and Leia looked at Anakin.

?Sometimes he even gets on my nerves,? the older Jedi admitted. ?So, what?s your next move??

Han sighed. ?Before they go into lightspeed, they jettison their garbage. So we just float away??

Leia nodded. ??with the rest of the garbage. Then what??

?Then we?ve got to find a safe port somewhere around here.?

    ?Where are we?? she asked.

    ?The Anoat system.?

    ?Not much there,? Anakin mused.

?No?? Han said as he scanned through information on the system?s planets. He saw a name that brought him up short. ?That?s interesting. Lando.?

Leia was confused. ?The Lando system??

The smuggler shook his head. ?He?s not a system, he?s a man. Gambler, smuggler, scoundrel?you?d like him.?

Anakin?s daughter shot Han a dirty look and muttered, ?Nice.?

Han didn?t even notice since he was lost in his own thoughts. ?Bespin. It?s pretty far, but I think we can make it.?

Anakin gave Han a sharp look. ?What is it??

?We go back a long way, Lando and me,? Han admitted, though not happily.

?Can you trust him?? Luke asked over the comm. His X-wing was perched beside the freighter on the back of a Star Destroyer where they couldn?t be detected.

Han sighed. ?No?but he?s got no love for the Empire, I can tell you that.?

The Star Destroyer they were on began to move. Han straightened in his chair and watched an access port near them very carefully.

?Here we go, Chewie. Stand by.?

As soon as Han saw pieces of garbage floating past them, he ordered, ?Detach!?

Both the Falcon and the X-wing drifted away from the Star Destroyer, hidden among the trash and byproducts of the human crew. A few seconds later, the Star Destroyers all jumped into hyperspace.

As Han powered the Falcon up and they raced away from the trash debris, Leia shook her head and patted Han on the shoulder. ?You do have your moments,? she admitted. ?Not many of them, but you do have them.?

    Han grinned.

The sky was a beautiful golden red that signaled the ending of a day at Bespin. As soon as the two ships entered the atmosphere and began their approach to Cloud City, escort ships appeared and demanded their authorization codes to be there.

?I just want to land,? Han said. ?Not mine. Surely I don?t need an authorization code to refuel, rest, and leave??

?Do you have a landing permit?? the cold voice on the other end asked.

?No,? he answered in exasperation. ?I don?t have a landing permit. I?m trying to reach Lando Calrissian??

One of the escort ships fired at them, though they missed?on purpose.

?Whoa! Wait, wait! Let me explain!? Han exclaimed.

    Chapter Twenty-One

Leia paced inside the dark cell while Han watched her and the only door. Chewbecca had switched Threepio off, much to the humans? relief as the droid?s persistent moaning had threatened Han to the breaking point. Now Chewbecca took advantage of the opportunity of both time and Threepio being off to fiddle with some of the processors in the golden droid?s neck.

It was better than going back to pounding the walls.

Han sighed and straightened from his leaning position against the wall. ?What do they want?? he said in frustration. ?They haven?t even asked us any questions!?

Leia did not reply since she was as aggravated as he?and worried about her father and brother. Luke and Anakin had been taken from the group and she had not been able to hear anything from either man. The worry ate at her, but in a way she was gloating inside: surely if the Skywalker men were being held hostage separately, she would have been as well?if the Emperor?s Hand had known she was kin to them. Leia vowed to use the piece of knowledge that the other woman did not know somehow.

Suddenly, their door slid open and Lando?along with four armed men?strode in. He looked haggard and much older since the last few hours they had seen him, but Han did not seem to notice nor care.

?Get out of here, Lando,? Han growled, making for his ?buddy? as Chewbacca roared and showed his fangs, dropping Threepio on the floor.

Four blasters turned on the group and halted each in their tracks.

Lando glared at Han. ?Shut up and listen! The Emperor?s Hand has agreed to turn Leia and Han over to me??

??over to you?? Han echoed, eyes flashing in anger, as Leia?s jaw dropped.

?They?ll have to stay here, but at least they?ll be safe,? Lando promised.

Leia quickly recovered from her shock and latched onto one of the things she had noticed omitted. ?What about Han??

Lando sighed in what appeared to be genuine regret. ?Jade?s going to give him to a bounty hunter working for Jabba.?

She shook her head in disbelief. ?Jade wants us all dead??

?She doesn?t want you at all!? Lando interrupted, voice rising. ?She?s got what she wants?the Skywalkers.?

Han?s entire body tensed up and his chest heaved in ire. ?You fixed us all real good, didn?t you? My friend?? and on the last word, he lunged at Lando, moving faster than anyone in the room anticipated. His right fist connected with Lando?s face, knocking the darker man staggering.

In an instant, all the guards swarmed Han, viciously him with the butts of their blaster rifles. Chewbecca made a move toward the men?

?Stop!? Lando ordered, his eyes never leaving the Wookie even as his words were meant for his men. They obeyed immediately and backed away from Han, who was curled up in a defensive posture on the ground. ?I?ve done all I can! I?m sorry I couldn?t do better, but I?ve got my own problems.?

?Yeah,? Han panted from the ground, ?you?re a real hero??

Lando glanced at him, then Chewbecca, and finally Leia. At a loss for words, he finally just left the chamber as quickly as he entered, his men behind him.

Leia sighed as she and Chewbecca bent down to help Han to his feet.

?You certainly have a way with people?? she mused, trying to hide her smile.

?Before you say anything, Jade,? Anakin began calmly from his position on the table, strapped down as his son had been, ?know that I have been bedded to lying for so long, that I will know if you do so even without the Force.?

Mara cocked an auburn eyebrow over a startling emerald eye. ?Then I suppose it would be useless to tell you that your son already told me what I needed to know??

?If he had done that,? the elder Skywalker pointed out, ?then you wouldn?t need me.?

?Unless you still had not deduced our Master?s plan for you,? she smirked as she pet the ysalamari through the cage.

Anakin was not deterred. ?I don?t care what Emperor Palpatine wants. He will not find me so easy to twist to his needs a second time.?

Wow, very interesting twists you have put on this story. Lovely writing!

I've been awol for ages, too. I'm glad that you and family are safe, even if the circumstances may not be what one had planned at the beginning. Sometimes even a pretty sunrise, or a child's laughter can be a blessing. Wishing you plenty of such.
