    Chapter One

As Lieutenant Dryne walked briskly in the direction of the Proud Conqueror's bridge he struggled to keep his emotions in check. For five long years he had been a member of the reputable Star Destroyer's crew and in that time he had learnt that it was essential to radiate an outward appearence of calm and control at all times, no matter how intriguing the situation may be. If you could appear to be in control at all times you would instantly appear to be more professional.

Morynn Dryne was nothing if not professional. He had graduated from the Imperial Academy five years earlier as a young man of barely eighteen years of age. Back then he had been a nobody, a naive kid with fanciful ideas. His sole ambition had been to achieve power and status, for people to shudder with fear and apprehension at the sound of his name.

When he was a child his parents had once asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. At the age of seven most children would have replied that they wanted to be a space pilot or a bantha keeper or a shop owner. Dryne was not a typical seven year old. Dryne said that he wanted to rule the galaxy. At the time his parents had laughed and ruffled his hair, they had dismissed it as a child's day dream. They did not know that their son had been deadly serious.

Even at that young age Dryne had wanted to inspire fear in people. Men like Emperor Palpatine, who practically had the world at their fingertips, did not achieve their status in life by being benevolent and understanding. Character traits such as the ability to intimidate people, the power to control other people and a will to terrify people into doing your bidding were much more useful than kindness, loyalty and compassion. Naturally due to his lust for power Emperor Palpatine had been Dryne's idol, his rolemodel for as long as he could remember. As far as he was concerned the Emperor had it all.

During his first few months serving under Admiral Vyperre on the Star Destroyer Dryne's arrogance and discontent with his lowly rank had made him many enemies. After all a young and inexperienced graduate from the Academy who looked down on other people who were much higher up the command chain than himself was never going to be universally popular among the ship's crew. Luckily Dryne did not concern himself over such a trivial matter as popularity.

Dryne's ruthless ambition and wish to better himself ensured that he was quickly noticed by Admiral Vyperre. If Dryne had fought with the Rebellion his arrogant attitude may have deemed him unsuitable to be given a position of considerable responsibility. However he did not serve in the Rebellion fleet, he was a soldier in the Imperial Regiment. In the Imperial Regiment qualities such as ambition and unquenchable thirsts for power were seen as assets rather than hindrances. After all Lord Vader himself had been handpicked as the Emperor's second in command because of his will to control the galaxy.

Therefore after a relatively short three years of service Dryne was promoted to the respectable rank of Lieutenant. Yet he was still not satisfied. He learnt to conceal his lust for blood and conquest beneath a mask of control and unshakeable calm. Inwardly however his emotions were like a hidden predator, waiting to pounce at the first sign of provocation.

That provocation had occurred six months earlier. The man who Dryne had idolised since he had been a small child was slaughtered by a Jedi. Although it had not been the Jedi who had actually thrown the Emperor to his death, Dryne found it easier t

    Chapter two

    "You've gotta be kidding me!"

Out of the corner of his eye Han saw that Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa were struggling to prevent themselves from laughing at his outburst. No doubt they were finding his indignation extremely amusing.

"This is a very serious matter General Solo. The child's safety is of the upmost importance to us," Mon Mothma did not look impressed at Han's outburst.

During his five years of serving in the Alliance Han had endured countless humiliations and embarrassments. He had hidden in Imperial garbage chutes, almost got roasted by a bunch of knee high, fur covered ewoks and inhabited a planet that was more suitable for Wampas than humans due to its sub zero temperatures. Han Solo was certainly no stranger to embarrassing situations.

Yet this request was simply too much for the proud Corellian to take. Han Solo was an expert at accomplishing tasks that other people would consider impossible. He was an ace pilot, an experienced marksman and an accomplished combat fighter. For Krest's Sake he had even made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. Surely Mon Mothma didn't expect him to become some sort of bodyguard for a snotty kid.

"You're asking me to take time out of blasting Imperials to babysit!" Han spluttered.

"The mission is to protect the child not to babysit him. His life in endangered! Commander Skywalker? Leia? What do you think?"

Han glanced at his best friend, Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight. Since the Battle Of Endor and the death of his father Luke had made it his personal task to rebuild the Jedi Order.

Before he had met Luke, Han had always been cynical towards mythical religions such as the Jedi and believed that their abilities and powers had been exaggerated as time went by. He had thought of the Jedi as a bunch of magicians who used a bunch of tricks to con gullible people into believing they possessed extraordinary powers.

Then Luke had became a fully fledged Jedi and although he was reluctant to admit it, Han began to realise just how powerful the Jedi were. He had to admit that if Luke could round up more Jedi it was likely that the scraps between the New Republic forces and the remaining Imperials would be finished an awful lot quicker.

However Han knew that Luke was frustrated at the lack of force sensitives he had found. The fact that the kid who was apparently endangered was rumoured to be force sensitive was certain to capture Luke's interest.

Besides, although Luke had grown up an awful lot since Han had first met him in a dingy cantina on Tatooine there were still traces of the young farmboy in Luke's personality. Even though he would never admit it Han was actually sort of glad that the dangerous and traumatic events of the last few years had not driven all of Luke's gullibility and naivety away. Just like Luke had charged headlong into the rescue mission all those years ago on the Death Star, Han knew that Luke was probably going to charge headlong into this situation too without any idea of what he was getting himself into.

"I'll go," Luke accepted the mission almost immediently.

Han snorted. Sometimes you didn't need to be a force sensitive to predict these things. Once a farmboy, always a farmboy.

"Leia? General Solo? Will you assist him?" Mon Mothma asked.

"I'll go too," Leia replied although her voice betrayed her inward confusion.

Han rolled his eyes for what felt like the hundredth time since he had entered the President Of The New Republic's office. He had never really like Mon Mothma. To him it seemed as though she favoured the well bred and elite members of the Alliance over the common rabble like himself. Mon Mothma represented everything Han hated about politics. The politeness that hid her scorn and distaste, her prejudice towards the troops that had pursued less respectable professions before they had joined the Alliance and the way that she always hid her true agendas beneath layers of diplomatic fodder.

As far as Han was concerned Leia was one of the only politicians he could e
