Hey, all.

I haven't posted work here in a while. Been busy with my comic book. But I did contribute to the Topps Revenge of the Sith sketch card series. So I thought I'd share some samples of the cards! Click here to see more.

Also, I'm now offering personal sketch cards for sale through my website, so I'll post the Star Wars-related cards I do here in this thread as I finish them. The front of the cards will feature a drawing of any character people ask for (they're like mini-commissions) and the back looks like this:

Thanks, Obi-Dawn! Hopefully, I'll continue that trend with the new sketch cards. Plus, it will be nice to get to do some characters that aren't part of ROTS. That list Topps gave us was WAY too restrictive. I envy the guys who did the Heritage set . . . more to work with.

Wow, those are great, they all look so sharp! Particularly I find Yoda to be interesting as he looks to be almost...domineering? (not sure if that's the word I'm hunting for). Personal fave's are the Wookies too.

Otis, your cards are so cool! I've always loved your art style and it's great to see your take on so many different characters. My favorite is the one with the Utapau shrivel-face guy (yes, that's their technical name... to me). I'm going to keep an eye out for him on Ebay.

I just checked out your website and realized you've got Oddly Normal #3 in stores already! Time really flies. I ordered the set... I'll be sure to let you know how I like them before I pass them off to my sister.

These are really great, so many of them and all so wonderful in capturing the individual characters so well. All I can say is that there must have been a lot of film watching to get these down!

I adore your style, especially so since I can't do stylised very well. You've got your own groove and it's nice you're being recognised for it. Well done man!

I should be posting scans of my personal sketch cards soon. I got a bunch of orders already. All but one are Star Wars characters (but I'll post the other one, too. It's Gimli).

Awesome cards! I like the Leia one in particular, and not just for the obvious reason... okay, yes, sort of because of that. But also because I like how you framed her with Jabba's tail. Great idea for a vertical card like that!

I'm actually thinking of doing a series of cards that will, in the end, be a panorama of the entire Fellowship. Then I'll see if anyone want to buy the set outright. Or I may put it on eBay, we'll see.

But if I get an order for a Legoloas before then, I'll post it!

Oh and that raises a question I'm curious about. Do you know the laws regarding copyright with such characters? I'm a bit at a loss because I was asked for a commission to draw a character from a film for them but I'm not sure whether that is entirely legal. And also is selling art based within a film setting (like the SW universe) but with original character designs legal? Bleh I'm at a complete loss. Can you help me here or direct me at some useful information? Thanks!

 

People have been doing commissioned work with company characters for years. I wouldn't worry. But if you're going to do something like the sketch cards, don't put anything in PRINT that mentions a particular company. I actually asked my publisher if I could mention them and my comic on the back of my cards, but most companies (Lucasfilm, Marvel, ect) would frown on that kind of thing.

Take on commissions if you're getting requests! Make that money!

The Topps cards on my site were done earlier this year. The cards I'm posting in this thread are new, personal cards I had printed. They're the first batch of orders from collectors. More to come.
