My take is that the new SS movie is meant to portray Harley as a little of both. As far as I know, there hasn't been anything to suggest a specific cannon material on where certain characters fit in the grand scheme of things. Maybe another movie - even the spinoff - would give us a better idea on what's happened to this point.

Even as far back as Adam West as Batman, I cannot recall the Joker actually telling a joke. Does he do it in other media?

Saw this on Tuesday with two people who had seen it already (my sister and another friend) and another who hadn't. It was edited so poorly. The soundtrack was dreadful. Killer Croc's character was butchered. Carla Cumberwhatever was wasted as Enchantment. Ditto with Leto.

However, Margot Robie was near perfect in her role. Jai Courtney was hilarious. Viola Davis walks away with every single scene she was in.

I still didn't think much of it, and I blame the spineless WB execs who didn't give a **** about Ayer's skills, so they just wanted him to make a sad GotG clone. David Ayer is a great director who would've excelled at making this material. It was right up his alley. They ****ed up a beautiful thing.

You know what my real problem is with this movie? It just doesn't fit the Suicide Squad. The tone was meant to be a lot darker than it was (think Assault on Arkham). The soundtrack was really inappropriate to the subject matter and many aspects of a lot of characters were not done well (like Killer Croc).

The conflict itself doesn't fit them either. The Suicide Squad is essentially a black-ops division of B-List (as far as power goes) supervillains. The whole "fighting magical beings that open an interdimensional portal that will destroy Earth" thing just doesn't fit. Also, remember that line about Superman attacking the White House? How would the Suicide Squad stop him? They don't even remotely approach the same strength Superman wields so what's the point?

Also, I'm glad to see people mentioning the editing because I left the film with the feeling that a lot was left on the cutting room floor.

I will say that Jai Courtney and Viola Davis are what made this worth watching. Viola, especially. She could become as good as Justice League Amanda Waller if given the chance. Wonderful actress.

I just rewatched Assualt on Arkham yesterday. I really liked that one, more than SS; especially the dynamic between the Joker and Harley. Most comic fans (even the casual ones like myself) know that they always had an on-again/off-again relationship; culminating in her really wanting to disassociate from him. There were certainly some scenes in AOA that were kind of unnecessary (Harley and Deadshot bed scene, for instance), but the overall plot itself was more interesting and the characters for the most part could each carry their own weight.

Considering that DC has already enthusiastically stated that "Harley is our Deadpool!" in reference to her upcoming solo movie... yeah, that sounds like it's going to be a complete mess.

I've never understood that, honestly. She doesn't break the 4th wall like he does consistently. She is not that kind of character.

Why would it be a completely mess? Unless it involves the sexist media and whining public that have a problem with a female lead (Lord knows what to expect when Wonder Woman comes out next year), I can't see why it couldn't be a good movie; just as popular as Deadpool.

It's not that she's a woman, it's more DC completely misinterpreting her character.

Well to be fair, the comics themselves have shifted Harley's character around ever since her role in the Batman Animated Series of the 90s. Considering her devotion to the Joker, you'd never have guessed she'd completely walk out on him and create her own crew of "Harleys"; and then join the SS.

    http://www.darkhorizons.com/slipknots-backstory-was-cut-from-squad/

Ayer reconfirmed that Slipknot's backstory was shot but cut from the film. He also denied the actor's claim that Slipknot's introduction involved him strangling Wonder Woman.

Elsewhere, I'm hearing the novelization to the movie is based the original version of the film. Might act as s good guide for any fan reconstruction efforts should they not release the alternate cut as a bonus feature/double-dip release.

I have noticed that the online reviews trashing the film, the reviewers describe themselves as hardcore DCEU fans, to establish their credentials.

I think I may have been helped going in by literally knowing only Will Smith among the cast, and being vaguely aware that "Harley Quinn" was a Joker fangirl. I suspect that being a SW fan, I only knew the latter through early investigation of Mark Hamill's voice acting role as the Joker in the animated series.

Slipknot, Captain Boomerang, never heard of these other *******.

One online reviewer was upset that the woman who formed the squad was not played by CCH Pounder, whom I think he said had done the character elsewhere; and I know her primarily from The Shield - that would still be only two actors I would know going in. Not a big difference.

I thought it was well acted, well edited. I was only aware of some fan wanting to sue the producers over cut Joker scenes in the days leading up to me watching it, but I thought there was still a coherent Joker storyline.
Still, I am supportive of someone finally making a stand about trailers being misleading about the end movie.

Cons. Someone here or on Youtube mentioned when the crims were told what was going on, that "Three days ago-", whilst no actual passage of time beyond a few hours was discernible between the threat manifesting, and the team being deployed.

I'll agree with that. Also, there was no indication of why the Joker wanted the guy captured in the casino. I didn't recognise him from anywhere inside the film.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Bats' cameos! Oh, and the Flash.

    Sith-I-5 -

CCH Pounder voiced Waller in the animated universe.

    And the casino guy?

He's the one who gives out the location of the nano bomb factory.

I watched this yesterday and it is not awful as some of the reviews make it. I enjoyed it pretty well. I'll have to see about getting the novelization to see if a more linear version of the first act works better than the dossier version. So far, based on what I've seen, I think the dossier version works and gives a purpose to Waller describing the team members that she wants to use.

I think Croc was spot on with the DCAU version, with a small bit of the Pre-Crisis Croc tossed in. The soundtrack was fine.

Except the Squad in the comics were involved in larger threats such as stopping Brimstone, going to Apokolips and going up against Darkseid's forces, got into two fights with the JLI, a fight with Superman, capturing the various DCU villains, fighting Black Lantern versions of deceased members and OMAC. Plus, one version of the team fought managed to manipulate Doomsday into fighting Imperiex and was seemingly killed by Doomsday.

What's the point in Batman fighting Superman, since he isn't powerful enough to beat him unless he has Kryptonite. The point is to have a team that can deal with threats and the Squad managed to fight back against to powerful witches and win.
